Love going to a swingers club, love the naughty atmosphere and feeling of total freedom!

But given the average age of most of us, why is the music so shit?? These DJs always play modern rap type music that I and I guess a lot of other people have never heard of??

My musical knowledge comes from 50s -2000 as I think not much after that was any good

With music you can't please all of the people all of the time. We were in a club 2 weeks ago that played the Nolan Sisters - I'm in the Mood for Dancing (1979, reached number 3 in the charts). If the DJ is friendly you can ask them to play some requests, most will.

I agree but surely you’d play to the crowd? Majority being over 50 you’d play appropriate music?

Even at a wedding with mixed ages when the older stuff comes on the kids all get up and dance!!

If the majority of the crowd is over 50 then the club is missing out on a huge chunk of the population. They probably play more recent music to try and attract/retain a wider variety of ages

Unless you knew that ahead of time what the majority would be that night its hard to cater for hense more mainstream music.

Plus unless people say that they dont like it how are the staff meant to do anything about it

A club we visit here used to play Adele continously. Don't get me wrong she is amazing but when you are trying to get down and dirty in a swingings club the last thing you want to hear is her singing about her broken heart it is a bit of a mood killer

Cupid's often play an upbeat modern American country rock playlist on a Saturday afternoon that we really love, but I think it just depends which staff members are working.

Not got too much of an issue with the type of music played but do have an issue with the volume. When we go to a club it is to meet people have a conversation with a view to playing. That can be quite difficult when you are literally have to shout into the ear of the other person, you often find yourselves holding conversations out in the corridor which is hardly conducive to sticking up a meaningful friendship.

This. It’s no fun asking people to repeat themselves several times because someone thinks they’re some superstar DJ. Quiet enough to talk but loud enough to dance, please club owners!

Exactly my sentiments! My local club (I won't name and shame, but I live in Leeds) plays wholly inappropriate music at rediculous levels, through a crap sound system. It's a total turn off in a venue that's supposed to turn you on!

As for paddling in piss in the Gents, well that's a different story.

Not everyone no but should play to the crowd, and yes it doesn’t ruin the night but if the music was the type everyone knew and liked it might just get people more into it and be better for all!

I can’t agree more, this is something that makes or breaks a night out for us.

We went to Chams last night and the DJ was just awful, the dance floor was empty most of the night yet he continued to play shit music even when people rolled their eyes.

Last time we went the floor was rammed and people were dancing away all night, it was a different DJ.

Do people go to Swinger's Clubs to listen to loud rock/disco/pop music, (usualy, but not always, through a crap system that was a cheap after thought when designing the place), or do they go because the club is catering for sensual hedonistic pleasures? I wager they are ALL there for the latter. There are several genres of music that would be more appropriate and generate the desired sensual effect. Unlike most venues in Europe, in the UK we just don't get it - neither do the DJ's who think louder is better!

It’s funny, isn’t it, we all think we have great taste in music, we’re all absolutely right and absolutely wrong.

Music appreciation is largely subjective, and whatever I think is utter shite (and it’s a lot of music) others will think is great. Who is to say I am right and others are wrong. Obviously I think I’m right but I’m not arrogant enough to think I am the arbiter.

Also, Erasure are great.

We couldn't agree more. Even these organised socials (social being the operative word) some DJ's think it's their moment. We even expressed our concerns following an organised social event in Newcastle a few years ago only to get abuse from the DJ. Needless to say we didn't go back. As for clubs, it's not so bad if the club is large and have different areas to socialise but when its just one room and bar with separate play rooms music definitely should be kept to a level so folk can hold conversations. Also like some have said above, the wrong music playing for an older crowd, what is that all about? We say it is laziness from the club not wanting to interact, just set a play list off never to revisit to see what's going on. There are some clubs we've given up visiting due to the shit/loud music all night, not usually the only reason but when there are 2, 3, or 4 reasons the music usually is the last straw for us. It's not difficult to have a mix of genres to suit all ages through the night

I mean, don't you just pick nights that are more themed for you to enjoy?

For me personally, I don't really want to go to a club when they're playing older people music (60s/70s/80s) because it reminds me of my parents. Bit of a mood killer.

Loads of clubs do different nights to cater to different tastes. Just go to the ones that suit your tastes and stop going on nights that don't?

This string seems to be chatting about a regular night club/disco. The fact is that we're talking about Swinger's Clubs where the music ought be incidental to the main reason people go, which is for hedonist sexual pleasure. The music should heighten the experience, not distract from it.

When I go to a swingers club for their alt rock night or their Neon Rave night, I can confidently say the majority do not want to hear music for hedonistic sexual pleasure.

You evidently misunderstand how old I actually am!

We had to listen to "She Wears Red Feathers" by Guy Mitchell, "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" by Doris Day and then some pretty grim stuff like "Rock around the Clock", skiffle groups and later a string of mediocre offerings from the likes of Cliff Richard or the Beatles.

In those days, it was quite possible to be conversant with the entire broadcast music repertoire. Food for thought, given the limitless choice available nowadays.

Lots of clubs don't try and be musical at all. For instance Chameleons might have some background music and that's all, yet it is still a great clubs for sexual stuff.

Yet 5 miles down the road Xtasia has a big dance floor and a DJ who really knows his stuff and what to play to suit the customers on any night. Xtasia also has dedicated nights for different types of music, so the music is more front and centre then. Yet there are loads of other places around the club for sexual stuff.

So as with many things decide what you want and which club provides it.

Fortunately, the Beatles improved slightly after the 'I want to hold your hand' and 'Love love me do' era.

No idea what happened to Bill Haley and I never bought 'Rock around the Clock'!

The thing is that there is now so much more choice that if you don't want to listen to computer generated shit you don't have to.

In the 1950s you got whatever there was on Radio Luxembourg or the Light Programme. That was about it.

I would contend that things started improving with the emergence of the super groups and then deteriorated with the emergence of the boy bands and pop idols.

Anyway, the shittiness of music in clubs isn't down to the music market as much as to the poor judgement of the club hosts who play it.

Those of us who remember the late lamented Alan Sabini running Eureka discos will know that great club nights have existed and brought immense pleasure and enhanced the sexual atmosphere as well. No Saturday night went by without 'Face down Arse up (and others of that style).

"

I can tolerate stuff like S club 7, Steps, vengaboys and other Dross from that era, think I must have built up some natural immunity because my daughter used to be into that kind of thing when she was young, thankfully she grew out of it tho

Funny thread. It's slowly turning into old people yelling at clouds.

You are never pleasing everyone when it comes to music, take it for what it is. Some new stuff is great for a rhythm (especially spanking)

Chams on a Monday has the most cheesy playlist known to man but it's a bit of fun.

This modern music is all just noise, you can’t even hear what they’re singing about, most of it is just shouting. And this rap music, they’re not even singing it’s just talking.

"

Are you really saying you had it bad having to listen to bill haley and the Beatles??? These people changed music forever, you can’t compare todays computer generated shit to these greats surely

Remember a night at eureka in Kent when they played s club 7 that was home time for us

I wouldn't know S Club 7 if I heard them but I hope that if they are that bad they drove visitors away from Eureka after Alan's time!"

Bill haley and the comments were some of the early founders of rock n roll, I’m with you on the Beatles got more polished but the early stuff I still like as it was so of the time and the sound of the early 60s!

Eurekas partys used to be amazing yes

I don't really care about the decade the music was released, but there's just some music that really doesn't make you feel sexy in a club environment.

For example, I don't think I could ever climax whilst a club blasts Prefab Sprout over the sound system, haha.

But given the average age of most of us, why is the music so shit?? These DJs always play modern rap type music that I and I guess a lot of other people have never heard of??

My musical knowledge comes from 50s -2000 as I think not much after that was any good

Plenty of good music after 2000. "

"It’s impossible to make a playlist that will please everyone

I agree but surely you’d play to the crowd? Majority being over 50 you’d play appropriate music?

Even at a wedding with mixed ages when the older stuff comes on the kids all get up and dance!!

Unless you knew that ahead of time what the majority would be that night its hard to cater for hense more mainstream music.

Plus unless people say that they dont like it how are the staff meant to do anything about it "

I have been known to do the occasional disco, I never go with any preconceived ideas of what I will play. I will have my entire music catalogue available. In most cases professional DJs subscribe to online music archives, which give access to pretty much every song ever recorded. There is no excuse for not having the right material for the crowd... it's not as if we're carrying boxes of records about anymore.

I'd also add to the discussion that there is a tendency to play more sic too loud in clubs, how are you supposed to chat if you can't hear each other? It is fine if there are social quieter areas, but is there is one room with the bar & dance floor, chatting can be near impossible.

I’m used to Chams where it’s more about chatting and getting to know people than the music, but I LOVED Secrets in PDI when I was on holiday - loud music, dancing, body language, non verbal communication, loads of fucking. My kind of club. I pulled loads of people who don’t speak the same language as me and we had a great time. Didn’t need to talk.

Music is very subjective but we would prefer garage music from the mid to late 90’s (not the stuff Kisstory play). That’s not gonna happen so we just have to go with whatever is playing.

Funnily enough my first couple of visit to fetish and/or sex clubs in my early 20s was because I'd been asked down to DJ, but in those days I was still very inexperienced in the ways of the world and super-shy so I just played my records and didn't really explore any of the other fun to be had. Now I look back and gently kick myself for not getting involved. (I played house, funky breaks and a bit of progressive stuff, not too loudly either haha)

Got to laugh when we get crazy requests like that downstairs in our club.

Upstairs didnt particularly like it at the time but downstairs we had a long line of semi naked people doing the conga that then went upstairs and played together.

So its subjective to the time and situation really & it was only one song and think it was used as a ice breakers by the person who requested it

Edinburgh (She/Her)

Having been a professional pub and club DJ in the past, it is easy to knock them. It's a hard job to keep a diverse and mixed room entertained for 5hrs in a night.

I've dj'd to 6 people, I've dj'd to 3000 people. Same rules apply to all.

It takes skill, a good ear and persuasion to entice a crowd into a happy party frenzy.

Ultimately a swinging club is a cooler version of a wedding DJ unless a specific music genre has been requested by the management.

The skill is to not go down the whole cheese fest (as expressed by posts above nolans, s club7!! Takes me back)

The club management should have a vibe they are going for and set this out to the DJ or DJ agency prior to the start of the night. They should also keep the DJ in check if they stray to left field.

Volume is hard to judge.. do you do background and have no one dance, or do you step it up a little and piss of the oldies trying to chat about the weather.

Again, that's really a management problem, and they should determine the volume of the DJ, monitor and check constantly.

Of course if you have a regular DJ. They get to know the vibes, volumes and crowds. That's when consistency comes in and crowd enjoyment is elevated.

Personally, if I was to DJ a swinging club in Scotland on a general night, it would be a mixture of popular pop / chart dance mixes, classic and new with sexy RnB vibes. Keeping the tunes recognisable but staying away from the cheese.

Specialiatity nights would be again the cooler side of decades, 70/80/90s night. Or rock nights for examples.

A cheese night - smellier the better - bringg out Wingfield and the Macarena!!! Here we go...

Between Pontarddulias and Gorseinon

Agreed it’s hard life for a DJ. We’ve been to a few different events and it just seems there is a massive shift in music style that a sub 40year old will listen to vs. 50 year old.

I guess it’s the difference between dancing and partying.

A mixture is ok but it does feel often that it’s one or the other.

Blackpool, At The Crack Of Dawn!!

Speaking as someone who's DJ'ed more than anyone else at our club over the last six years I would say it's very difficult to make everyone happy with so many different varied musical tastes & era's in one club on any given night.

The trick I find is to read the room and crowd and play to it and who wants to dance some party crowds are easy to read but sometimes you have to mix it up a bit to make it work for everyone and even then it can be very difficult.

The thing I fear the most DJ'ing are requests because unless they fit with what you are playing it can kill a dance floor in seconds also people can get very offened if you don’t play there song within 3 songs especially when drinking, it's a no win situation DJ'ing in a swingers club.

I have a lot of symphony for DJ's in swingers clubs because if customers are not going to specific theme nights like 80's or 90's or trance or dance or cheese or rock or R&D & many more types of music you will never please everyone, it's simply impossible.

Finally, if I was DJ'ing in a normal club or pub I would know the type of crowd, age group and music preference before the night, in a swingers club thats impossible so reading the room and going with the flow I find is the only way xxx

Am all for a mix up of music but it is frustrating when you're dancing away getting into it and there is no consistency with the genre. The constant change p*sses me off.

One minute its candy dancing across the dance floor to then be followed by a mosh pit head banger from metallica

This is the problem DJ'ing in a swingers club outlined with these two comments above.

You listen to a radio stations or go to gigs or nightclubs to listen or dance to certain types of music but in swingers clubs you will find very wide and varied musical tastes.

For instance I know a Tgirl who loves heavy rock (five finger death punch) a lady who likes the Nolans & ABBA, a guy into ibiza trace and another guy into 70' glam rock and some else who likes cheese on toast music, like Saturday night & vega boys.

It's simply impossible to please everyone and sorry to say some of the younger swingers wouldn't have a clue who Ken Bruce is lol yes a crime but very true unfortunately.

The best you can do is read the room and play to it and to those dancing but even then you get the annoying twitts who bug you with inappropriate requests that ruin the flow of the music.

I have one couple who want The pogues fairytale of new york no matter what time of the year it is and will not leave you alone until you play it! another who wants there wedding song in there 70's that no ones ever heard of and another person who wants the time warp & YMCA.

Unfortunately some people only want the music they like but as already outlined already unless a specific night like rock or 80's it simply impossible to please everyone.
