Separate message requests from ongoing conversations

Can we PLEASE separate the initial "hey, how are you doing" messages (and call them Message requests or something) from conversations we're actually having with people we like and have replied to? I'm sick of people apologising for losing our conversation simply because they're drowning in "Hey"s from hundreds of strangers.
