I agree I think it would lead to abuse and potentially others joining in for fun.
Some of the status updates I've seen could lead to a lot of ridicule and I don't think that would be nice.

Some status updates actually suggest they want a reply or comment. What's wrong with giving to user the option to allow comments or not when they post the status update. |
