Never been an issue when I’ve used the word panties with women. Maybe because I’ve been with a disproportionate amount of non Irish women has influenced that.
I couldn’t use the word knickers 
Maybe, also, we always have reached too much of a state of arousal for a simple single word to have mattered a fuck |
