Research breeds, obviously larger dogs need lots more exercise and space. Shelters will be able to guide you towards dogs suitable depending on other pets, children, etc |

Have a bernese mountain dog, an Australian kelpie, and a couple of collies. Two of them are adopted/rescued and this can sometimes mean quite a lot of extra time and effort, when they first arrive, but so worth it when they settle into their new surroundings. Just make sure that you give plenty of consideration to your lifestyle and where you live before choosing. |

I have a 6 year old collie retriever cross I rescued from a shelter. Don't get hung up on breeds, crossbreeds are the Swiss army knives of dogs and are usually less prone to the health issues caused by selective breeding. Think about the amount of space and exercise it might need, boredom is the #1 cause of behavioural problems in dogs and some breeds will wreck the place of have the neighbours banging your door if they are bored throughout the day.
If getting a dog from a shelter, try to find its back story, as dogs who have suffered abuse or neglect will need more time and patience in training.

I can vouch for that - a relative bought one for pure vanity and the dog is a nightmare - poorly socialised and not properly looked after  |

German shepard, rescue dog that was severely mistreated unfortunately. Took alot of time for him to come around, was terrified of wellies for ages so something bad clearly happened.
He's a great character and friend. |

Through my life we’ve had Great Danes, German Shepard’s, Springers and Staffies....
All great dogs/bitches, however, after I had my kids and they were small I opted for something a bit smaller, a cockapoo.
Hands down the most intelligent, gentle and loving bitch I’ve ever had.
She literally thinks she’s my wife and while she can be cranky around other dogs she adores humans of all sizes.

That's a shame, they're amazing dogs. Unfortunately some are the product of selective breeding for extra wrinkles which usually comes with skin problems. They're rather wilful so need a good owner. |

I love my dogs at present I have a Belgium shepherd and a collie.I can't remember a time I didn't have a dog.
They are such great company my main advice would be to make sure you get one that will fit in with your life as well.There is no point in getting a high energy dog if you don't have time to take them on long walks to burn off the energy . |

I have a Lhasa Apso. He is an absolute mammys boy. They are very intelligent, they were bred for guarding and this is a duty he takes very seriously.
He is heading for 10 years old and still zoomies round the house like a pup.
I wish I socialised him more when he was a pup cos he is very selective about who he likes. |

Have a labador/jack Russell Cross (don't ask me how that worked) but she's a great dog. Was very easy to train. If are getting a dog I will say buy lots of balls as most dogs will chew them up in no time. |

I've had dogs since I was a child. I love bigger dogs. And I agree, going to the pound or rescue shelter is the best route. I'd love a bigger dog, labrador mix, or alsation. I think some large sleek dogs are beautiful, doberman etc. |

Im embarrassed now with all these big dogs
We had 2 Maltese dogs that I bought 7 yrs ago for the family....always hated/ afraid of dogs ...took a lot of persuading
Fell in love with them but one died 2 yrs ago and one is left
Shes so small she cant climb furniture but if you lift her up on the couch she'll sleep for hours beside you

My grandmother had 2 teacup Pomeranians that I basically adopted when I lived with her - they were the cutest little guys ever. My only regret was that I couldn't bring them with me when I moved.
Now though, it'll be a Labrador or a Doodle when I get my own. |

Tbh BM we only have our two because theyre excellent guard dogs. The kids have been trying to persuade us tp get a small inside dog but the smallest one is terrified of small dogs so its a no for the time being. I miss my yorkie. He was a great little buddy |

After my personal experience with a rescue dog, it's unlikely I'd go that route again (too traumatising for dog and owners when you just can't make it work - and I've had dogs before and grew up with plenty of animals!), particularly with a special needs child in the house.
It doesn't matter what a rescue centre tells you of the history of a dog. It's never complete until you bring them home and see their behaviour as they settle in.
My daughter does have the most beautiful and fun whippet puppy now though, a perfect choice! Keeping me active when the children are in school.
Mind you, he chews absolutely EVERYTHING (except for his own toys!), reallocates shoes, toys, clothes. He chewed 5 or 6 keys off my laptop, which I still haven't quite forgiven him for  . Never mind the bruising of the ass, knee and strained wrists as well as the ego! after he and a dog friend took my legs clean out from underneath me playing chase at full speed on a walk! 
I do have 2 puppy baby teeth though as a souvenir |

Rescue dogs all the way!! I volunteer for a dog rescue charity, who doesn’t have premises. We foster dogs first in a proper home, all medical needs are met including spay/neuter. When ready for adoption the foster can then tell the prospective owner exactly how the dog behaves, likes/dislikes etc. One tip I will give, 2 dogs are better than 1… mine are a Lhasa apso & a shiztzu who are the most amazing loving funny dogs ever!! Research research research… otherwise you won’t have any idea as to the needs of the dog/s you have chosen! Good luck |

She needs a good brush every day or two also a good visit to groomers every 2months when I can't see her eyes any longer. |

I have 5 small to medium dogs but have had a doberman in the past and fostered a lab for 14 months and helped train her as an autism assistance dog.
Have also helped train numerous search and rescue dogs over a 6 year period.
As others have said get a dog to suit your lifestyle and living arrangements. |

Ive a handsome little mongrel, near his dotage now but people still ask is he a puppy as he is so small and lively!
Hes a bit clingy since my ex moved out, he follows me everywhere in the house and likes all the doors to be open 
He has always liked to relocate shoes and socks around the house. They are like his soothers |

Think very carefully about the breed of dog that best suits your lifestyle; one of the best dogs for children in the Scottish terrier, the Dandie Dinmont.
Avoid King Charles Spaniels as they are much too inbred and suffer from epilepsy.
My ow favourite is the Korthal's Griffon; a hardy outdoor dog with staying power.
If you want very high energy dog get a Malinois.
For very large breed lovers, get an Ovtcharka; they grow to 100kg.
For status dogs, choose a Pedro de Presa Canario; strong willed and potentially dangerous-to the owner.
Get a dog breeds book and consult the internet.
I cared for a wonderful dog for 16 years; I was devastated when he got canine osteosarcoma, bone cancer.

"Staffordshire terrier here.. Got him in a rescue.. Apparently was abused.. Sleeps most of the day and night and is very affectionate.. Not a good guard dog though "
Staffies are wonderful family pets; their are also known as 'The Nanny Dog' because of their protective trait towards children.
Cross breed dogs are often more healthy than pure breeds, because of a trait called hybrid vigour.

Cavalier King Charles are a wonderful dog. So loving, obedient & loyal. They do have health issues, not predominantly epilepsy though. Not just due to in breeding neither. It’s due to greedy breeders constantly breeding a bitch, & not carrying out health checks on them & their pups. It’s very sad to see puppy farmed dogs, thrown to the side as they’re not producing pups any longer. Those are the dogs that need rescued. |

We have a wee tiny yorkiepoo rescue.
Picked him up from the streets a day before the big snow storm in January (people who were occasionally feeding him confirmed that he had an owner, but was running the streets at all times of the day in all weather for years).
Poor thing was shivering with cold and fear, severely underweight and bleeding from a botched haircut.
Currently snuggled up with us on a sofa, fed, watered, brushed and walked plenty.
Couldn't ask for a better and cuter doggo  |

Dirk came home one night and told me about a wee stray running the streets and it was baltic outside. I mean wear a thick jumper and a winter coat baltic.
Once he found out that the doggo didn't have a home to actually live in our plan was to at least lift him and maybe see if someone would like to adopt him, but we both fell in love with him instead .
I'm a dog person, dirk loves cats more, but even he agrees that our wee doggo is better than a cat  |

I some to at least five new people today who were dog owners/walkers.
If I had the facilities to have a dog, I would get one in a heartbeat; and the icing on the cake would be if there was some means of identifying current or aspiring swingers when I met other owners. |

We go for a walk and then she runs away across a field while i hold the dog ....she rings me to release the dog and he goes after her like a bullet...so fast |

I've got a Border Collie, he's my best friend. Typical Collie he's got so much energy but he's so well trained and well behaved. Such a good boy.
I actually have worked with dogs for the last 7 years so he comes to work with me everyday.
My advice for you would be to do your research, thoroughly. Research breeds, breed traits, their temperaments, exercise/grooming needs. And lastly training! People are always dumbfounded when they ask me 'just how did your dog get so well trained' This may shock you but I trained him, bit out of the box I know.

Who let the dogs out who who who who, there's plenty of dogs on here lol. I have a English Staffordshire bull terrier they are great dogs. No matter what dog you have it's how you treat and train them but i would imagine the blood line matters aswell. |
