Rebranding to promote new image

Newry Down

Liveline on RTE Radio One this week has exposed yet another sordid scandal in schools run by a Catholic Religious Order: at the prestigious Blackrock College in south Dublin and at its sister college at Rockwell in Roscrea, county Tipperary.

These institutions were run by a religious body that previously styled itself, The Holy Ghost Fathers, but has recently rebranded itself as a new entity: The Spiritans.

Can you think of any other products or organisations that changed their name in order to disguise their origins, or to avoid any association with details about them that tarnished their reputations?

The most obvious example is when Windscale nuclear reprocessing facility in Cumbria became Sellafield; Marathon became Snickers!

The latter was simply a rebranding to achieve some consistency as the product sold in the US had always been known as Snickers.

But Peter Sutcliffe did change his name whilst in the facility at Broadmoor; and Levi Belfield changed his name whilst in HMP Wakefield.

Does rebranding actually work, or does it simply bring additional adverse media exposure?

Some fab profiles have rebranded with limited success.

Some are just like Gerald Ratner.

What the Holy ghost fathers did can never be rebrand.

Far far away

Perhaps some of the profiles here could rebrand. Reposition themselves in the eye of the consumer.

1. Bathroom pics... Clean or at least remove the pants off the floor.

2. Less is more IMO.

3. Subtly is the art of persuasion

4. No false advertising

5. Labelling. A photo from 1996 is not indicative of current sale condition.
