Installing a strong hook in the ceiling

Does anyone live in South London and is good at DIY? We want to install a strong hook in our ceiling but aren't great at DIY. We don't want to bring the ceiling down! Any help would be appreciated

Cut a small patch and install a timber to hold the hook and whatever weight will hang from it and re-patchcl

I think you're overestimating our DIY skills!

What sort of hook you's want to install and sort of weight to hang off it?

If it's a standard plasterboard ceiling then you'd definitely need to install a timber joist depending on its use

We have timber joists in the attic above. The hook is for a sex swing.

I'm a handyman and good with my hands!

depends on the joists and how wide they are. To hold a swing i would suggest adding timbers on top of the joists for strength and not touch the structure of your house,

If you have no luck elsewhere, give me a buzz. i can come and look for you and do the work

If the floor joists above are 14” wide apart the least intrusive way is to drill two holes, one in each and use some 3/4” steel round bar to bridge the gap. Use some M10 studding through the bar and get an M10 eyebolt on the ceiling side

Thanks Paul. It looks like we have someone local but if we still need some help I will give you a shout.

If you put wood across the top of the joints in the loft, how could you hang from that without having a gaping hole in the ceiling? Could you batten between the joists so the metal eye could be screwed in at ceiling level not higher?

Definitely need to spread the load across joists and not just fix into one Don’t want a collapse during the fun

Would suggest you use a decent thickness of plywood across the joists and brace down to the top of the ceiling you will have to open up the plasterboard as it will crush under the load. Hope it helps

What’s the best material and way to brace down from the ply across the joists?

If you still want the hook fitted let me know in a handyman and work around the sutton area. I’m sure we can work out a payment plan. Lol
