This is true, I own a computer repair centre and we have seen several computers coming in that the owner has had this call. It also scares you because if you fall for it it suggests you have all sorts on your computer like child porn etc, you don't but it suggests it.
They do plant a virus in your computer though so you should take it to a computer repair centre to get it cleaned if you are affected.
As the OP says hang up and remember that no one from Microsoft would ever phone you to tell you that you have a virus on your computer |

Yep, happened to me. They caught me at a busy time and I couldn't understand the conversation at all but didn't want to seem rude. Next time, I'll do what my neighbour does and tell them I'll get the home owner, put the handset on the table and go watch telly for an hour or so. |

I like the idea of telling them some fake pc details!!
If anyone rings you up and asks for your info, give them it but change a bit. eg if they ask you to confirm your birthdate, tell them it all correct except the wrong month. If they are legit they will tell you that you're wrong. Then you ask what's wrong... and if they tell you the right answer you know they are ok.
If they don't say anything is wrong you know they are dodgy. I've done this when my bank has rung me up (why oh why do they cold call??!) and it worked. |

Had one of these calls and almost fell for it!
Then hung up and did ring Microsoft and spoke to a very helpful person in their fraud office! Thankfully I didn't get to sucked in! Stressed me right out though |

If you have the time, string them along is better, the longer they are on the phone to you the less time they have to try and con someone else...
Asking them about details of the virus, when you have got a pen and paper handy, get them to tell you what the problem is, when they ask you what what's on the PC screen, tell them it's connected to the TV, and it's a Sinclair spectrum or similar...
The over all game should be to keep them on as long as possible and get them to hang up...
Remember, it's probably a poor person trying to earn a living on the other end, and their unlikely to know that they are scamming.

NO!!!!!!! Jeeeez! If they tell you you are wrong, it just means they have already got the info by some other source and are ready for such 'spoiling' techniques by 'targets'.
If you don't know the caller - NEVER NEVER NEVER give ANY personal info over the phone!!!! I used to work for a direct marketing services company years ago and the telemarketing side could tell you all kinds of stories about the sort of info people will give to complete strangers over the phone.
I even refused to give info to the CSA because THEY couldn't confirm who they were - didn't arf piss them off! Ha ha ha!!!!!!

This one happened to a friend of mine last week - I suggested she download and run MalwareBytes AntiMalware from download.com (it's free), and it found and cleared the problem for her. Her other half was scared to take it to a shop because of all the porn on it, of course! |

I have seen this a few times in recent months coming into our shop too, it often puts an image of a Policeman on your screen too. The more sophisticated virus even switches your web cam on and really scared the shit out of a couple of my customers.
It's actually quite a nasty little virus that gets quite deep into the computer and has took our engineers a fair bit of time to ensure it is totally removed from the computer. |

A fool and his money are easily parted. It's not like there hasn't been enough information put out warning against scams so I'm afraid I have little sympathy for those who still get caught out.
p.s. It's a tad pointless calling the police after you've hung and have no info to give them about the scammer. Far better to string them along, asking carefully constructed questions to establish their identity - but above all else, give them the wrong information about yourself. Even if you waste 1/2 an hour of their time it'll be worth it. |

I have a call this morning following an e-mail which i just deleted. They told that i have something wrong with my PC and that they could fix it from their center on line. I then proceeded to tell them that their phone call was being recorded and they put the phone down...... No number on 141 what a surprise |

Just to let everyone know the company is called the alien touch. They have a Facebook page that I left a rather abusive comment about their ways. They replied yes before deleting my comment. |

I love screwing with these guys, the call isn't over till I have made them cry or swear.
Having worked in contact centres I'm familiar with regulations and rights of the consumer has, and so once I hear the "something wrong with you pc" line its time for some fun. |

My friend is an IT director and pretty savvy. He ended up giving his bank details to con men and had to cancel his cards etc. Still don't know how he fell for that one as these con men are as obvious to me as the Nigerian princes with gazillions in the bank they'll share with me if I lodge their cheque in my bank account!
Banks never ask for full passwords etc it's always confirm name, date of birth and postcode. Anyone asking for more info than that are fraudsters.
