I just started watching the documentary last night, not finished it yet but he seems to have done a lot for charity and helping kids out and stuff. So I’m definitely a fan

Gonna watch the rest tonight

................................

Finish the second episode, your view will change, the first deliberately sets out to showcase his charity work and lofty connections presumably to show why the victims thought they wouldn't be believed, and the wider acceptance of his behaviour.

It’s very close to the bone, but definitely shouldn’t be stopped from airing.

The amount of real life docu-series out there that highlight the stories of those affected can be quite educational at times.

No I don't believe it should be canned because it highlights how manipulators and abusers can put on a persona to gain access to the vulnerable and how corporations facilitated it. People knew and did nothing but make excuses for him 'well he is a bit odd but harmless really, look what he does for charity' and therein lies the issue, nobody looked

Saw the documentary. Pretty sick stuff. Probably most disturbing is how the premeditation is shown , later on. His behaviour can't simply be described away as deranged or unhinged.

Not sure whether the show should be cancelled. I'm generally against censorship and if it raises the awareness . Especially as he got away with it for so long, with so many choosing to ignore and not taking action. But there remain victims who may experience added mental trauma as a result of it being broadcast ?

Definately not a black and white question .

Isn't it weird that people will argue how it's ok to see dead people in the aftermath of a shooting (oddly specific memory of a thread on here after the attack in Belgium where I argued we didn't need to see the dead gunman's body on the news but people said it was newsworthy) but we can't watch a dramatised account of a peadophile.

He was a huge icon in his day and passed under the radar. Even when it blipped slightly nobody did anything. So it’s a story. A warning.

I saw him once on a marathon running past our school. The lads mobbed him. But had they’d known they’d have kicked the shit out of him.

Only Johnny Rotten spoke out. …and guess what? Patriots kicked the shit out of him!

Carry on filming.

Does a catchphrase have to technically correct every time it is used? Is it meant to be interpreted literally? With an insight into the past record of citation , then surely common sense should apply to the catchphrase also?

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

It seems odd that documentaries / dramas about serial killers are ten a penny, but seeking to put a complex life such as this into context is not to be allowed.

It seems that people perceive a deeper more personal betrayal when it's a popular face fron their childhood (see also Glitter) - there was a programme this week about Barry Bennell, who abused many young footballers, but no uproar about that...

In short, programmes like this should be made, but they mustn't sensationalise.

Is watching it mandatory? Do aTvS not have an off button? Should we consult the families and survivors of all the holocaust and any other documentary of human tragedy. Has cancel culture reached a point now where we all need to switch off, bury head in sand and pretend bad things don’t or never happen?

It's a very difficult, balanced, nuanced thing to do - which is why, I think, the instinct is to ban it.

Sky news is a tabloid ?

Really?

You think it's a reputable source?

To be fair, it was just one link. There are several articles of Steve coogan defending the programme. Including the BBC news site.

I just want to see the same source as Essex Tom so I can see it before it gets filtered through his brain! "

Where's the fun in that lol

I think they should make a TV show based in these threads. Host quotes over simplified click bait premise then the panelists (of course the same 5 comedians that are on most panel shows) try to determine the actual facts.

A bit like news of the world or have I got news for you but with a slight twist.

Is watching it mandatory? Do aTvS not have an off button? Should we consult the families and survivors of all the holocaust and any other documentary of human tragedy. Has cancel culture reached a point now where we all need to switch off, bury head in sand and pretend bad things don’t or never happen?

Portraying what we know happened might help people understand his victims better. And prevent victimisation from other, future predators

If you watch the documentary the first episode only really talks about his charity work and basically builds the image we all had before all the allegations came out.

Does it highlight that the BBC bosses knew what was going on way back to the 80's and even pulled a show he was on where someone called him out during filming?

That the papers also knew, but were silenced by Saville & friends...as for the Police- well he was a well connected person.

Would certainly be interesting to watch, to see just how the various powers that be are portrayed or attempt to distance themselves from the past

I wonder if this is part of the cries to cancel. The fact we'd have to recognise that people like this are sheltered by those in power. Our institutions help them (or those with enough power).

Less a genuine cry of the public and more a manufactured kerfuffle from the guilty who don't want exposure. (I'm not saying there is no genuine outcry)

I've not seen it myself so unsure of which station it's being broadcast on, but if it's the BBC, I think they should put any profits into a victim support charity. It would be obscene if they profited from it.

I’ll be watching it and hope it’ll bring those who knew or suspected he was up to something to the forefront. His story shouldn’t just be about him but how he got away with it.

As a kid I didn’t like him, he looked weird even in the 70’s & 80’s. All that jewellery, cigars and tracksuits on telly, he looked different from the presenters we were used to seeing. A sort of arrogance about him.

I’m glad they’re making it and got an A Class actor to play him as well.

Hopefully those that knew what he was doing, will be sitting uncomfortably in their seats when it airs.

He tried to raise the incident with the BBC and was met by an institutional wall of denial.

As stated earlier by a poster as long as the programme doesn't sensationalise it, then it should be made. As a society we should not be afraid to look at the evil things that occur, even if just to learn from them to ensure they do not happen again.

Growing up, a number of my family were nurses. They all despised him.

He fairly frequently made jokes about young girls not being aafe around him, even on live tv. I don't know if it thrilled him to get that close to being caught, or what the motivation was.

However, the fact that so many people call it a well-kept secret just shows that we'll believe whatever defence the BBC etc. throw our way.

"Mark Lawson gave a fairly gruesome account in the Guardian of having to physically intervene to stop Savile touching up a colleague and feeling Savile's erection against his leg in the process.

He tried to raise the incident with the BBC and was met by an institutional wall of denial."

Um, they are not at all comparable situations. The Beatles did not consistently push for him to get a knighthood, or share governmental secrets he had no right knowing.

The Stones did not frequently confide in him, seek out his advice, or provoke a bizarre level of loyalty from him.

As for other famous names known to hang out with him... yes, a good number of them knew.

I’ve said on these threads before that I was touched inappropriately by him when I was 17. I did not report it to the police, to be frank I just thought he was pathetic but Then that’s just my personal reaction to a situation. I’m glad those that did came forward.

I’ve met him many times as he lived locally and he came across as a very self-absorbed individual who thought he was to be idolised. Take for example a time it was a ladies birthday party with her girlfriends in a restaurant and he took the cake from the waiter before it got to the table and blew all the candles out and then asked if she wanted a birthday picture - she didn’t. He was like a real ‘uncle knobhead’ type that you can’t help but cringe at.

Anyway, point being do I, as a teen who he touched think it should be axed? no! Will I watch it? Maybe just to see how they portray him. My only ‘please don’t’ is down to the fact he would FRIGGING LOVE the fact someone’s made his life story on the telly and that makes me grrrrr.

Nooooo. You don’t know Tom. He has no need to troll under a different account. He’s more than capable of saying what he thinks without hiding (no offence Tom!).

Does anyone know Tom? Verifications are years old.

Provenance you mean...

Nope, I mean it's more likely you had other accounts to verify yourself as an elaborate ruse "

Both your veris are on same day? What dies that suggest?

Actually not saying it suggests anything. But anyone can fake veris and you faking your is no less likely than any other.

You made an accusation on very scant circumstantial evidence at best. And now grasping at straws to defend the claim.

There’s no need. Tom’s a forum Legend!

Well my veris are from an event so that's why they're the same date, where the people verifying are also verified and event organisers from the club, so I think mine hold a bit more water.

Why not message the accounts and ask them if Tom is real or not and then to validate those accounts you could maybe message the accounts of those veris who verified him to verify Tom is real

I am sure Tom has better things to do than to create multiple accounts to fake veris lol.

Fk me, they could fake the moon landings. Do you seriously expect us to believe that it is not beyond the wit of man to create an entire fake swingers even, build a venue and get some actors to create veris?

You mist think we were all born yesterday!

"I just started watching the documentary last night, not finished it yet but he seems to have done a lot for charity and helping kids out and stuff. So I’m definitely a fan

Gonna watch the rest tonight "

A fan. He was a nonce, he used his position to abuse children and vunrebal adults.

He was a vile individual, who quite frankly should have been shot. Anyone who nonces kids should be killed rather than put in prison.

Moonwalking is far too fancy for 21:58 on a Sunday
