Had a conversation recently with a friend and it got me thinking...
Most older ladies all seem to have short/shortish hair....
Is there a cut off (no pun intended) at which a longer style doesn't work? |

Not sure on cut off time but longer hair is aging on a lot of mature people |

I recently had the chop and absolutely love it. I've gone from hair past my shoulders, to now one side cut short behind my ear the other side at chin level. I wished I'd had the bottle to do it yrs ago. My hair was dry and brittle from the mid length down though x |

I'm thinking of going shorter at 50 |

I have always had long hair for a while then chopped it off, then grown it back, after a bit... If I like how it looks I don't see what part my age plays in that... It either looks nice, or it doesn't |

I had a short bob about 4 years ago and hated it.
Sometimes it doesn’t have to do with age, but rather your face shape. Mine is too round for short hair. I think I suit long hair much better. I have noticed it is getting thinner and a bit drier but them I take steos to look after it. |

I have tried many different hairstyles over the years, such as short bob, and even had a fringe put in at one point - never again, too much maintenance work!
My hair is long currently, past shoulder length and I think it still suits me. May change it again when I hit 50 |

I know it has no bearing, it's just when you look around, you very rarely see an older lady with long hair x |

You're right. I don't know why but my hairdressers always comment on how unusual it is for someone of my age to have long hair. Just over a hundred years ago no women had short hair until the twenties. My grandmother wouldn't have dreamed of cutting hers. |

That is also true.
I am going to say something slightly controversial now and I am not including all women in this but...
Some women stop bothering after a certain age. They don't do their hair, think "this'll do, I'm not going anywhere" when they get ready to go to the shops, save their decent clothes'for best' and think make up is for special occasions only. (I know make up isn't necessary but you know what I mean). Then they say "since I got fifty I feel invisible"

It is a pain to maintain long hair but styling a short bob properly is time consuming too.

So true! Not in the least controversial in my view.
Hair, especially long hair is synonymous with youth and fertility... Which is why some cultured prefer women not to flaunt it...
I am certainly 50+ (ahem) and have hair down to mid back. I really don't have any trouble with it. I don't go to expensive hairdressing, just daily shampoo and conditioner. When it's damp I clip it up (think Katharine Hepburn in African Queen). When I do let it down (just before switching on camera for work meeting), I shush it up (for volume) and I sweep it over one shoulder. My bf loves smelling my hair... |

My mum is mid 60's and she has very long hair. It's grey and quite wild, but she wouldn't consider getting it cut because she likes to hide behind it, like a security blanket almost. She's the only one in her group of friends who hasn't cut it short. She hates my short hair. |

It takes me about an hour to style mine. I use a Babyliss big hair and now and again straighteners. I only wash it twice a week though |

I guess maintenance is a key decision factor. As Oriental I have very (and I mean VERY) straight hair so by twisting and clipping up when damp, that is an easy styling trick. When I do let it down, it's wavy and more volume... All our miles vary... |

Mine is frizzy unless I style it. That's a result of years of tinting and being old |

I'd shave all mine off if I had a better shaped face.
At the moment it's quite long and looks nice when it's blow dried, straightened then curled; but I'm lazy and that's too much effort for a daily basis. |

Is your wife/ex wife aware her pictures are on here, out of curiosity?
I've had shortish hair since I was 16 (shoulder length bob) then I cut it super short as it is now, when I had my daughter. I love my short style, I think it suits me far better than the longer styles. And Mr KC loves it |

I work with lots of women in their 30s and 40s with long hair and down all day. I am not sure why they don't just clip it out of the way? |

I think there is yes. For me personally there will come a time when the long and possibly the blonde will have to go. I’m not there yet though
Just my personal opinion I must add before I get the people can do what they want brigade down my throat |

Same with me. The dry and brittle I mean, from mid length. As I am pure white without colour My hair was breaking off so had to cut it shoulder length. It's now thick and luxurious again. |

Mine is long and has been for years, had all sorts of styles over the years but ultimately prefer it longer.
More versatile as can wear it in a number of styles as well as loose
Mostly a sort of loose chignon clipped up for daily living, sometimes plaits or ponytail, tend to go loose for play
I don’t think age should be a factor really, more what suits in terms of face shape and lifestyle |

I think you will find most ‘mature’ women have shorter/short hair is down to menopause and hot sweats! Hair round the back of your neck just results in a ruined hairstyle and the back beautiful no wet through!
Mine is tied back most of the time now |

I bloody hope not! I have naturally curly (read frizzy and untameable) hair, and it needs the weight from the length to stop it from sticking straight up. I've never had it above my shoulders since being a baby, and I hated it even that short...for many of my teenage years it was down to my bum. I'd feel lost without my mane. |

Think for over fifties women I know it's more of a habit thing as they had it like that 20/30 years ago. .....and a convenience thing, quicker to dry.
I love older women with long hair, especially if they suit it grey, think they look so sophisticated |

I have very thick and very curly hair....I've made the mistake of cutting it short multiple times...bad decision! I now know the shortest I can go and not end up with a massive poof ball of hair is just above my shoulders. |

I wondered this! X
I had to cut mine a lot cos it wasn’t healthy, and felt a change, now sort of happy with it but sometimes I really miss a longer length. So I’m gonna grow back 2-3inch so it kinda reaches my nipples. And should be fine!
I absolutely love when some girls have the hair down to their tailbone but yeah, It’d take me FOREVER to maintain it .. and so much olaplex so no
(Also I find it to be more common in younger girls?) |

I had to cut mine up short (shoulder length) after the kids. I lost a lot of hair and it went so thin it looked ridiculous. I used to have it waist length. I miss it but the thickness just hasnt come back and i cant be dealing with extensions lol |

"Way i see it if its not long enough to tie your own hair up in your own hair or at least have a girly hair style you wont be for me
How do you tie your hair up with your own hair "
Just keep a strand free and wrap it round the base of a pony tail or bun. You still need a grip though. |

My hair is fine but dense. I'll re-evaluate as I get older and it thins out.
It might not thin out. Not everyone's does"
That's interesting and good to know - I have no family experience (everyone in the generation up has short hair), but it's something I hear/read about when looking into my own hair care. |

The information tends to concentrate on hair thinning as you get older I suppose. I know a lot of women for who that hasn't happened |

I have thick hair... I had it cut from boob length into an asymmetric bob, shaved on one side in my 40s..it looked amazing
I'm growing it long again now (its almost cleavage length -the intention is that one side will be shaved /undercut and the rest will stay long.. Probably do it in the winter |

I think if it's in good condition then the length is irrelevant. Very long, thinning hair in crap condition is ageing though...imo.
