Reports that Tesco used to allow electric cars to be charged for free but now charging 28p per unit of power. Was it once really free?
Electric car drivers said to be so angry that some may boycott Tesco. But noone from Tesco has ever put 5 star in Toms car while he shopped...

It would have been a novelty to have had an electric car plugged into your supermarket back in those early days I suppose. Most of life now seems to be about unplugging and being wire free, funny how the thing that is used for independance now has to be plugged in to work. |

I saw a news article, only a day or so ago, claiming that unless you have your own driveway for a private charging point, you are screwed with an EV. Also using public charging points make your EV only about 1p per mile cheaper to run than petrol, and of course you have to stop a lot more often... |

They along with VW and pod point have spent 30mil on free charging, had to come to an end. Also only real people that are complaining are the ones that never shopped there anyhow and just 'used the free charging' that technically was never free as was for customers. Loads of uber drivers mad though as they can't park up and top off for nowt any more. I've only used the rapids at tesco in past (always had to pay for it on rapid) as there was never any of the 7kW ones free anyhow.
About time they turned the tap off impo now us that actually use them may be able to find one freed up for use. |

Don't know but I've just driven first 4500 miles for free thanks to Tesco.
One guy I met there, would leave his car on charge for 12 hours twice a week, take it home to power his house using Vehicle to Grid, then sell back to Octopus what was unused then go back and do it all again.
Great while it lasted..

I don't trust electric cars, I wonder if they generate an electro magnetic field around the occupants which could lead to leukemia.
The cost outways it's practicality.
If I did get one it would have to be a self charging one otherwise it's a waste of money.
Tesco know how to make a buck, probably just towing the line to jump on the energy crisis bandwagon which only has three wheels. |

Tesco made very little. To see at my local Tesco, drivers parking very expensive cars and either walking home, jumping on an electric scooter, being picked up and later dropped off - leaving cars in excess of 6 hours on a car park clearly signed as 3 hours max.
Times I have gone to Tesco in the morning, returning at diner time and tea time to observe the same vehicles parked.
It's an abuse of a good thing and couldn't continue.
At 4500 for equivalent of £170 in electricity at home for 34p/kwh, is still much cheaper to drive an EV.
I've had over 960kwh from Tesco which I'm now paying at home and not breaking the bank at £192 for the same.
4500 miles for £200 in the EV
I have a diesel XTrail, that's £110 to fill up for 450 miles.
The only people moaning are the ones stuck with expensive cars, they reliednon Tesco to subsidise the running costs.

Why, for taking something offered for free?
The only selfish ones were the over nighters and over stayers.
Last week, you couldn't get on a charger for cars left all day.
This week our local Tesco has consistently had 2 or 3 available.
Like everything in life, abuse it - you loose it. |

Well, this week I am going to park my EV at a local petrol station in a way, that blocks access to two pumps for 3 hours.
Let's see if ICE owners react in a kindly, friendly manner?

I think it's less about the "being free" and more about the "being able to charge their car". If the petrol car driver had plugged his phone or laptop in to charge, all would be fine.

I think it's less about the "being free" and more about the "being able to charge their car". If the petrol car driver had plugged his phone or laptop in to charge, all would be fine.

And for this reason I have a 15meter charge cable over the 5meter one that came with the car to be able to park away from the muppet in a petrol car, or the EV who has abandoned his car for the day where charging had finished 3 hours prior.
Then run a long cable around or even over selfish individuals vehicle to be able to charge mine.
Yesterday, I watched a guy arrive at a Tesco fast charger (he was once a regular all day EV abandoned on a standard charger user), sometimes 13 hours.
He connected his car to the fast charger, started the charge and walked home. The charging stopped 80minutes later where he then returned with his second car 100 minutes later to charge this one.
In the 100 minutes his car was locked onto the charger and not charging, 7 other drivers of EVs came in and were unable to charge theirs so had to leave. 2 leaving shitty notes on his car.
It's not about free, it's common courtesy and like everywhere else in life- its lacking. Some people are unable to charge at home and rely on public charging.
Tesco free was good, but many are now paying to use them. At 28p/kwh, it is still cheaper than charging at home for many. |

Nothing said when LIDL and ALDI put their prices up to 40/kwh.
But FREE, Satan is unleashed on Tesco for charging. Predominantly the electricity put on to the Grud was from Tesco owned Wind Turbines, but wind hasn't been great so cost is being incurred from other sources.
I've seen the abuse on their chargers myself, like many others even complaint yo Tesco over it.
Most sites were fitted with ANPR to stop the All Day charging abuse.
The Audi I saw stick in 55kwh on a fast charger yesterday was one of the overnight stayers soaking it up for free two weeks ago. |

Nearly a month without Tesco free charging.
4.5 miles to the Kwh using home electricity still doesn't come close to the equivalent cost of petrol or diesel.
9kw @34p/kwh (£3.06) is the equivalent to 4.546 litres (1 Gallon) of petrol (£7.09), diesel (£8.19). So, for every 41 miles, its still over £5 cheaper to drive electric.
As I'm paying 19.9p/kwh at hone for next two years, compared to the diesel 4x4 I also own, its a saving of over £6.50 per 41 miles.
Then there's the 8 months free Solar charging from March.
Who'd have ever expected diesel to be £8.19 per gallon?

Fully agree, I still need a diesel for towing but justified the second car cost, by down rating its insurance from 14,000 per year to pay as you go at around 2000 per year.
Fuel saving is £2400 per year, servicing, wear and tear a 6th, and with free Solar, equates to having two cars for the price of one - with one allowed into clean air zones for no fees. Roll on the day electric can tow 2500kg..
I agree with VED, it's unfair not to contribute.
Solar charging is the future as that cannot be taxed - I hope!!
Big issue with large Solar is the fricking paperwork and at over 3.7kwh having to fill in same forms as a Solar or Wind farm.
I get why they do it to protect Grid overloading with Solar but constraints can be added to the installation to stop this. Export Limiting set to G98's 3.7kwh but lowing unlimited Solar on the generation side.
9kwh here, exporting almost zero due to car, hot water and heating, yet I had to run the G99 process and hideously put 10kw - 40p's worth as annual expected Export. |
