Senza Una Donna - Zucchero and Paul Young.

Awesome little guitar solo mid song.

For those who love a good Power Ballad try this mash up of Whitney Houston’s I will always love you, Lady Gaga’s I’ll never love again and Mariah Carey’s without you, all spun in to one remix.

Let me know what you think.

"These are all very worthy contenders and I have most of them.

But - what makes a ballad a power ballad? I mean *actually*"

Bombastic production values are a key element .

I do wonder if a few mentioned are a bit too high a tempo to be classed as a ballad (*music pedant alert*)

I’ve always thought Styx - Babe was a classic (cheesy) power ballad. Doesn’t seem to get much love .

"Black Crowes - She Talks to Angels

Pearl Jam - Black

Cult - Love"

Absolutely banging tunes. Im a huge Cult and Pearl Jam fan..

But im offended you have selected them as power ballads.

I certainly wouldnt class them as such. I could be wrong though.

What actually is a power ballad?

Ive always assumed it was songs like:

Toto - Africa

Foreigner - I want To Know What Love is

Europe - The Final Countdown

Scorpions - Wind Of Change.

So what defines a Power Ballad??

(Or should that question be another thread?)

A power ballad can be soft rock too! As you have already stated some tracks.

A power ballad has 3 criteria, an air drum fill, a key change and a lyrical phrase that automatically invokes the 'fist of feeling.'

Beef's definitive top 5 power ballads

5 Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler

4 Hero - Chad Kroeger

3 Keep On Loving You - REO Speedwagon

2 You're The Voice - John Farnham

1 Wherever You Will Go - The Calling

Honorable mention also to 'Up There' by Satan The Dark Prince from the South Park movie soundtrack.

Thank you for reading my essay on power ballads.
