"I (jim) did Traditional Aikido for quite a few years. Thank you for replying. In your opinion, is this something you could still get into at over 50? " Traditional Aikido yes, Sport's Aikido maybe not.

I have a Shodan in Aikido... practiced for more than 14 years, loved it.
Just take it at your own pace. They will teach you how to take a breakfall but you don't have to be doing all of the advanced falls until you either want to, or feel capable |

Like most arts why would age be a factor??
The mindset is the first and foremost 1st step. |

Hello stranger ! Welcome back
I never did this style but I’d say if you don’t have any back, knee or major flexibility problems you can enjoy martial arts into 50s and 60s . For years I suffered with my back but it’s sorted now and I’m doing MMA & boxing, I just take it easy as I have lost a lot of flexibility and have sone permanent nerve damage down one leg.
But it helps - anything that works you core strength is good. I used to train under a guy in his 60s Qigong & Tai-chi , he’s in in 80s now and still teaching. Qigong is so beneficial in older age. |
