Nostalgia is a hell of a drug and rose tint is one hell of a colour.
People didn't care about each other all that much more than they do now. Conflict and controversy was still strong back then.
There was little care for those that are different, so much less care than there is no in that regard. Different sexuality, race, even those with different hobbies and interests were bullied and picked on by adults no less. |

All this too! For many people/communities the 80s were a complete shit show. |

Couldn't agree more. But because we didn't have instant global communication we didn't have access to the world's lack of care like we do now. |

Fair point looking at it from racism, bigotry, homophobia pov I guess. We were definitely less accepting of those that were in the margins. |

Hm.
I am tempted to say I miss everything- the music, the food, the toys, the cartoons, not the clothes because parents wouldn’t buy
But I don’t miss all the drama at home, the crying, the hysterical episodes, the suicidal mother…
Love revisiting the 80s in my mind but they’re ok where they are. In the past. |

It probably tastes so much better now thanks to the availability of an abundance of ingredients |

I miss the back end of 85, where I made little noise.
Servants fed me and washed my backside.
There were a plethora of toys…
Aaahhhhhhhh to be young free and careless

That is exactly what I miss- the probably-now-forbidden artificial flavourings and colourings. Not saying they were better, just that I miss them….
Something else I don’t miss- adults chain-smoking |

Not being at the immediate beck and call of anyone, just one house phone.
Not being reliant on Americans for my opinions, and not thinking the UK is the Fifty First.
FAFO being a legit thing.
Hating spending time at home, being outside being the main reason to get out of bed. |

Communities were closer. Now neighbours hardly know each other, people don't use the local shops they get it all online.Only the locals are in the local pub and only locals get involved in the community. In the 80's people who had just moved into the area got involved. You didn't need an organised neighborhood watch for everyone to look out for each other. |

Early 80s I was totally feral. Always out with my mates. No one knew where we were or what we got up to. By late 80s I was a teen. Still feral. But I had manners amd respect, cos I was raised right
I guess I miss manners and respect |

Talks with my gran in her little Terrace in Garston
Nan, mum says I'm not supposed to have red top.
How old are you?
6
Well I'm very old aren't I?
Yes
Thank you, and I have been here a very long time?
Yes
Do you think maybe I have learnt a few things?
Yeaaaahhh
Well trust me you will see every 10 years or so they change their mind. Sometimes it's silver, sometimes red, sometimes blue. They like to reinvent the wheel, even if the wheelbarrow is on fire. You just drink what you like... ok?
Yes nan thanks nan.
.
Now go play out. Don't be a bully aaaand?
Don't let anyone bully me
Love you Nan
.
I miss my Nan. Timeless wisdom. |

"I miss folk caring about each other

I mis some people that are no longer alive.
I miss the long summer nights and long summer holidays that seemed to last forever.
I miss getting 10 sweets from the penny tray (or 8 and one from the 2p tray).
But they are more to do with the passage of time and remembering being young than specific to the 80s. |

Pre-mobile phones and the long summer holidays off school - never needing to arrange to meet friends because you always knew where they’d be and everyone was in walking distance. So you’d turn up at your mates house or wherever, and work your way round town picking up more friends en route until you got to the destination house, where there’d usually be a house party because someone’s parents had gone on holiday. Happy days. |

I miss from the 80's:-
Being able to get up from a chair without the 'agghhh,'
Being able to go the whole way upstairs without stopping half way up wondering why i am actually going up there.
Being able to go shopping without the need to make a list before leaving home ,- then walking out without it!
Being able to line up and play 10 single records on the record pole in my radiogram.
Being able to wait 10 days for my photos to be developed. Then going to Boots to buy a new photo album for them. |

Courtesy of Blair and his fetish for destroying educational standards, devaluing degrees until they are worthless pieces of junk socpop trash and undermining British values in favour of his mates in France and Germany?

The crazy thing is is that the 80's were when people 'officially' started to put themselves before others!
The age of Thatcherism (the modern British Catholicism), that never-leaving guilt over non-conformity, "Greed is Good", Trump Towers, endless privatisation (selling off everything the parents of those people fought for, from council houses to care homes to our utilities and technological infrastructure), the age of 'product' for it's own sake and marketing pretty much anything for the sake of sales (music albums being knocked out with anything as filler for example), the age of green Armani suits and fashion label fascism in schools, money, money, money... the nuclear family before the extended family (nuclear family and nuclear power over anything alternative), terrible wages, higher purchase, boom-bust-boom-bust, competition obsession, the rat race, survival of the fittest, the arms race, de-funding of all the arts (and our world class cinema industry even) because creativity is seen as threatening, the idea society "doesn't exist" because we all have to move where the work is and then move again and again. Jobs that would cynically move us around. The elderly being seen as in the way....
Yet, yet... when it comes to genuinely caring (especially for the people who are clearly caring - 'snowflakes' and 'the woke' etc are so deeply hated) - how has it somehow got worse?? How is it even possible?

I absolutely detest the people that watch the entire gig through their mobile phone screen. You pay so much money for a lot of gigs these days. A lot of people really have lost the ability to just enjoy the experience without worrying about showing off the fact that they were at a gig on social media. |

It was a time when you hardly ever heard of young people ever being stabbed to death in broad daylight. Police used to be on patrol and were an actual deterrent.
Shoplifters used to be prosecuted so people thought twice about helping themselves and walking out, free of any retribution.
You could catch a train to london without it costing the same as a flight to greece.
People used to have actual friends and interact with each other in person.
