"Rabbits don't lay eggs "

The word Easter actually originates from the Pagan (and Norse) Godess Eostre, she was Godess of Spring & Fertility. Eggs and Rabbits are symbols of fertillity.

To add to this.

Traditionally the modern seasons started at the midpoint between Equinox and Solstice, as defined by the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. Not fixed points in man's calander.

The midpoint between Winter Sostice and Spring Equinox falls around February 5th/6th. This is a simple feast (giving fest/festival) of pancakes, as the previous years food supplies dwindled. It is the root festival of Christian Shrove Tuesday and St Valentines Day.

The period between this festival and the Spring Equinox fertility festival of Eostre...

[also called Ostara or Eastre, whose name gives us the word Oestrogen (œ letter also written as eo), was/is pronounced in English as Easter (œ written as æ )]

... was called Lencten in Anglo Saxon. This word is Lengthen in modern English and refers to the noticeable lengthening of the sunlight over dark.

Lencten lasts for a period of 41 days. It is marked by a shortage of food resulting in the healthy fasting / giving up food for the weak during Lencten. A spiritual act of communion. Lencten from where the word Lent derives ends with the fertility festival of Easter. The period after Easter to May Day.. the beginning of Summer, was known as Spriggen. From where the word Spring derives.

Why bunnies and eggs?

Simple. Around Easter the first foods appeared to replace the previous years supplies. These foods were the birds eggs being laid in the wetlands (duck, goose, swan). In addition the normally reclusive Hares were out in the fields (Mad March Hare) boxing as part of mating rituals. This made them easy to catch.

The symbols of the fertility festival therefore became the Hare and Egg. Romans introduced rabbits as food to Britain. Over time their numbers have grown and Christianity associated rabbits to easter when the pagan festival was culturally appropriated.

This period of three festivals is therefore:

February 5th/6th - Shrove Tuesday / Valentines Day

The lovers meet

March 21st/22nd - Fertility Festival - Easter

The lovers mate

May 5th/6th - May Day - start of summer

The lovers marry

Nine solar months after the lovers mate (21st March), the son (goddess sunna) is reborn at the winter Solstice (Dec 22st)

In the Lunar calander, the winter Solstice falls on the 25th day of the 10th lunar month after Spring Equinox. Or to use the Roman vernacular, upon the 25th day of December.

In short what you think of as Christianity is in reality pre-Christian paganism attached to the story of a political dissident from the Palestine. Assimilated and authorised by Rome to maintain Romes power and control upon the crumbling empire.
