Meeting people when out?
Jump to: Newest in thread
If I'm on a dog walk, I feel obligated to say good morning/afternoon/evening to other dog walkers. Quite often have to stop and let our dogs do their thing and end up talking. A lot of times other people stop me because of my dog (people love him, he's a very joy infectious creature!) and it gets me talking to others.
If I'm on my own, I rarely speak to others. |

"I would never start a conversation with a stranger (social anxiety). I can hold a conversation, but I just can't start it 🫣"
You should stand at the bus stops near me. It's like a bloomin gossip shop. |

"I don't go out, I prefer to stay in and start 20 threads on fab each day ...,🥪"
If someone starts 20 threads in a day, I’d report them as I think it’s breaking forum rules. |

I have a mix of the anxiety (and I get overwhelmed easily because of my autism), but also the social pressure to be friendly/accommodating because I'm a woman.
It's a stupid annoying tightrope to walk on |

They always find me! It's like I have a neon sign "She's a listener!" 🤣 |

"No I'm shy earphones in and mostly avoid eye contact "
Last couple of years, particularly post my official autism diagnosis, I've accepted that headphones are an accessibility thing for me. Sound regulation (I'm very sensitive to sounds) rather than just fucking myself up when I go out.
(It doesn't always work. People are gonna people. But it helps a lot) |

Same! Some of the medical details I've been told by strangers make me wonder if I look like a nurse |

When out walking the dog I always greet or chat to other dog owners. Having a dog means people gravitate towards you.
When out running I will acknowledge other runners or walkers with a smile, wave or thumbs up.
If I'm out and about on errands I wouldn't say I'm a chatty person, as I'm usually focused on remembering what & where I need to be, and items I need etc.

"When you’re out and about, do you ever talk to strangers?
Do you even smile at strangers when you walk past?
"
Naturally and we get smiles back, mostly that is all, but a few times it goes further. I remember one in Swansea smile, hi, chat , dance, her sister disappeared (that was a disappointment) then we got friendly |

I didn’t used to. I’d walk around trying to stay unnoticed and not make eye contact with people.
Since starting swinging and putting myself in a lot more social situations with strangers my confidence has grown and now i have no problem starting conversations and smiling at people when out and about day to day.
