I might quite fancy visiting the United States of America back in the time when it was civilised. Unlike the thunder dump of intolerance, stupidity and fascism it has become now, that I don't want to get within a thousand miles of. |

If I had to go back to an ancient civilisation as a woman, I'd pick Sparta. One of the least worst options? Trained up and honoured as the birther of soldiers, and if I die in childbirth, I'm honoured like a fallen soldier. |

I genuinely would like to go to some of the ancient tribes (some still exist today,though you're not allowed anywhere near them). Where time does not exist, nor does capitalism... Just simply day and night...and by the way we're hungry,so go and catch something! It would be great to sit around a fire with the elders and have the trippy balls powder blasted up your nose by the shaman and go on a journey of vision, then talk about and interperate what I'd seen. |

The Bronze Age Collapse.
Basically every one of the big Mediterranean civilisations - Phoenicians, Greeks, mycenians, Egyptians all kinda disappeared overnight and one reason was a disparate group of seaborn marauders called the sea peoples. They left hardly any archeological trace and nobody knows who they were or where they came from.

I worked in Egypt for a couple of years luxor aswan abu symbal the south basically lots of cities of historical significance i reckon that would be a crack i would go to the original Isis temple in its prime i done the the visit to Phila island basically when they flloded the low lands when the dam got built they moved the temple on to phila island but its original footprint is still marked with pylons .... funnily enough i never done the pyramids up in cairo ... mainly cos i was flying in or out ... so not in the mood |

I dont think any era would be great however if i had to choose it would be India before colonialism as they had a belief of a third gender of non conformity in the hindu religion which would ve the closest i could get to my life now |

I'd probably go with Ancient Egypt during the reign of Hatshepsut. She was one of the most powerful female pharaohs, and I'd love to see how she managed to rule in a male-dominated society. |

I'm going to pick a civilization not mentioned on here yet and say the Carthiginians. Would love to have visited the Ancient city of Carthage. What were the people like? The culture? Read in full the exploits of Hanno the Navigator who was said to have explored the Western part of Africa in the 5th century BC. See how the Carthingians built their world famous Navy. So many things. |

Alao what is interesting is that the concept of being a Queen didn't exist in Egypt at the time, so she referred to herself as a King and dressed up as a man. |

There was an era when higher oxygen levels supercharged insect size, but it was the Permian, around 350-300 million years ago, quite a while before the dinosaurs, who came on the scene around 250 million years ago. 😊 |

Well that's interesting. We divide history into these boxes, but the reality is that cultural influences and practices persist and bleed into later cultures. Her field tended to cut off areas of study around the end of the 1st Century CE, whereas she always felt that the end of the 1st century CE was too early for that. She argued that Biblical Archaeology should encompass the Byzantine period, the rise of Islam and the Crusades.
Personally I'd probably put the end of the ancient era at the disintegration of the Western Roman Empire, if I had to put it anywhere. But I'm a software engineer, not an archaeologist or historian. And I can't ask my wife, I'm afraid, although I'm pretty sure she now has all the answers. 😌 |

Whilst it's a somewhat appealing fancy, the increased likelihood of being susceptible to health conditions, without the modern medical miracles that we have, I'm more inclined towards staying ignorant of how it used to be. Swing has a valid point but also I imagine it used to be so much tougher than I'd cope with. |

I feel like the Romans and Greeks had a love-hate relationship. Especially as Romans took heavily from Greek learning, philosophy and culture, whilst seeing Greeks as too soft compared to Romans. Or maybe I'm mistaken. |

I think that's reasonable. The Roman elite took a lot from Greek culture, but looked down on what they regarded as immorality, particularly around sexuality.
Greek sexuality should not be romanticised either. |

I'd like to see Stonehenge and Avebury in operation, as well as Silbury and the long barrows, to see what was going on and how they were used. I would want to visit and return though. Like Terry Pratchett had it, good dentistry and soft toilet paper are fine benefits of civilisation. |

You have a perfectly valid point. In the right circumstances, it's very valuable to explore the lives of ordinary people. The main thrust of much of archaeology, as you'll know very well, is trying to reconstruct and understand the entirety of a society's lived experience, from the richest to the poorest. Which is why communal refuse pits are such a treasure trove.
But in the context of a lightweight fab forum thread, where I'm really not getting too deep, and it's a distraction from the rather unsettling experience of contemporary society, it's fun to imagine an ideal. It's like a Marvel movie. 😉 |
