Yes she was. Baking was her forte. Thursday afternoon was her baking time and we'd come home from school to a kitchen table laden with everything from shortbread to Bakewell tart. There were a lot of us so it was soon eaten. Like plague of locusts we were.

Not really, pretty average, but she taught me about homemaking and living on a budget. I get my culinary passion and skills from watching all the cooking shows as a kid and my Italian ancestry

My grandma however made everything. She baked, she made pickles, jams, chutneys, ketchup

My mother was an amazing cook.

Will never forget her getting up early EVERY morning to make us breakfast before school especially in the winter. Was never sent out door without a bowl of porridge in us.

Her lasagne, maccaroni and cheese and her liver and onions are still legendary to this day.

Miss those times man.

Mine was too and great cakes too. I loved eating all the edges of this lovely orange cake she used to make

Sounds rather lovely to have your grandma doing all that. Both my grandmas were great at it too but in diffetent ways. One was far more adventurous than the other.

My mum doesn't really enjoy cooking and I'm not the biggest fan of her cooking, not that it's bad or anything just I like food that's opposite in consistency and temperature to what she likes, growing up I thought I hated vegetables but it turns out I just hate the veg my mum likes and the veg I've discovered I love she hates so never cooked for us growing up, oooo the first time I tried a parsnip what an eye opener it was super yummy

My late mother was a wonderful lady. She was a very good cook until Alzheimer's took everything away. Her Christmas lunches when I was a child and into my early adulthood were marvels. Particularly the year she cooked goose!

I still miss her enormously. The adverts are true. Those with any form of dementia die multiple times.

I don't talk about my mother.

My grandmother cooked and baked and made jam and all sorts from scratch and I learned most of what I know from her. I wish I had an adapted kitchen. Unfortunately cooking is not either possible, practical or enjoyable anymore.

Thanks MB, I really appreciate it. It took a long while after mum died before the good memories came without thinking. That awful disease made the last eight or so years of her life truly horrible for the whole family. The stress of dealing with it all was immense.

The good memories do come easily now and your thread sparked so many of them. It's also good to hear about all the wonderful mothers out there!

She was pretty good. She was a great homemaker. Always delicious, nutritious meals on the table, clothes washed, ironed, hung. House tidy and clean.

I learned to cook by watching her. And I am pretty good myself but I’m not as diligent as she was. My son also has the cooking bug and he is really good. He is displaying some Mexican dishes at a food show in his university this week. ☺️ ❤️ 🇲🇽

My mum bless her was from a big family with humble background and she had experienced hunger. She never wanted us to have that experience. Lots of traditional dishes, made from 1st ingredients. Wasn't a great cook but did stuff well, never went hungry and I miss not just her but the smells and tastes and traditions and to be honest having her doing it for me, and the cycle. Sunday roasts, Monday leftovers, Friday fish, Saturday hash, The advent of the microwave though really fucked things up.

My mum is from Cyprus, so I was lucky enough to be brought up eating lots and lots of Mediterranean cuisine.

She really is a fantastic cook, mmmm

"My mother was a great cook, with there being so many of us and very little money around she also managed to feed us all with very little food at times.

She baked all sorts of fruit pies and the greatest scones you would ever eat on a Sunday afternoon while we all got a weekly bath ( there were a lot of us in that bath )

Her Sunday roasts were the best ! "

Growing up money was tight but there was always food on the table, three meals a day and a roast every Sunday. It was just plain basic food but always one hot meal a day usually at tea time apart from Sundays when we had a roast at lunch time. Apple pies and crumbles, rhubarb pies and crumbles, some times tinned fruit and homemade custard. Occasionally a cake or some buns and always a homemade christmas cake and Dundee cake. All basic food of the day and the only takeaway was the occasional fish and chips from the local chippy usually once every 6 weeks or so.

She did her best with what she had but we never went hungry.
