My car is making a bit of an odd noise

Dubai & Nottingham

Meant to be going to Northumberland later, but coming home in the early hours it started making a little noise and it’s a very long drive, I would hate it if the wheels fell off.

I turned the music down and opened the windows and I concluded the following.

Feels a bit rickety , like an old car, but he’s only five years old

sounds like something is a little bit loose underneath

It’s worse when I’m in to hiigh gear & the revs go low like it’s about to stall sounds really bad then

It doesn’t make up sound when it’s stationary, no matter how hard I rev.

It doesn’t make any sound at all when I turn it off it’s quite as a mouse right now just sat there on the drive

is not related to the acceleration but is when I’m going to have a bumps and potholes,

Any idea what it could be?

Keep the music turned up then you won't hear it.

Problem solved.

Disclaimer: I am not a professional.

That sounds like a driveshaft issue or maybe clutch/flywheel.

Don’t drive it more than a few miles from home without having a professional look it over.

Hello. My credentials are I have a car and sometimes chat to a mechanic on here.

Sounds to me like the issue is turning down the music and opening the windows. Close them up and turn up the music again and it should go away.

Have you checked the exhaust shields underneath? Drive up on a high curb and crawl under, make sure the car has cooled and wearing gloves, start wiggling things, something's loose.

Have you caught something on low kerb or speed hump and it's pulled away?

From your description it sounds like a exhaust heat shield.

Broken springs tend not to make a noise.

Other common knock is from the antiroll bar drop links, but that does not change with speed or gears

try getting hold of the exhaust pipe & moving it if you here the noise its exhaust heat shield . if you have a jack lift each wheel in turn & see if you can feel any unusual movement

Thanks - it does not really change with speed or gears other than gets worse when the reps are super low and about to stall and the car shakes, then it’s quite bad other than that it’s pretty constant as I’m driving around going over potholes and speed bumps. It makes the sound when the road is super smooth. It’s pretty silent.

what should you expect to pay for a mechanic to determine the problem and fix it if it’s one of these three things this exhaust broken bracket, heat shield or anti-roll drop links

That’s probably where I went wrong when I bought the car, first question the salesman ask is do I like Metallica? I said yes and he said let’s check out the power of the car stereo.

Edinburgh (She/Her)

Need a better description of the noise. Is it a rattle, squeal, squeak, does it happen when you brake or accelerate or turn left or right.

Most of the time squeals are brakes, hub bearings, dry CV joint.

Squeaks can be springs and shocks.

Rattles exhausts or loose shield plates.

The fact it's five years old, get a garage to check it over. Shocks can go after 5years or so. Brake pads should be changed fairly regularly every 3-5years dependant on wear, tear and use.

Garage check.

I would expect most mechanics to look at it for free.

The fact that you say it's worse when the engine Is labouring, does suggest it's exhaust or heat shield, but impossible to confirm that without looking at the car

I think with that level of expertise you're best going to a garage

does the rattle disappear when you put the brakes on, it could be something as simple as rattling brake pads on the front discs

If it's an annoying rattle from the front over normal roads and bumps then it's probably the drop links on your anti roll bars .

They only last so long the rubber perishes and you get a rattle as though it's the engine Google anti roll bar

for a penny

The only person who can help is a mechanic and they need to physically check it out. However well meaning the advice you’re getting, no one here can put it right. And whatever they diagnose, you clearly are not able to put it right.
