To set the scene .....
Simpson the butler is off to collect 'His Lordship' after a long time away in India.
"Good morning Mi Lord".
"Oh Good morning Simpson, how are things at the manor house?"
"Well Mi Lord, I'm sorry to report that your little dog died while you were away"
"Oh no! Not little Charlie ?, What happened?"
"Well Mi Lord he got trampled to death by the chestnut mare"
"But the mare and Charlie were best of friends, why would she trample him?"
"Well Mi Lord, she bolted when the stable caught fire and trampled poor Charlie"
"Good God Simpson, you mean the stable caught fire ?"
"Yes Mi Lord, sadly it did, It was caused by a spark from the manor house"
"Simpson ! Are you telling me that the manor house caught fire ?"
"Yes Mi Lord, burned to the ground I'm afraid. The fire was caused by a candle on Her Ladyship's coffin"
"You mean my wife has died ?"
"I'm afriad so Mi Lord, but as you were so far away we were unable to contact you"
"Good God Simpson, is there any good news ?"
"Well yes Mi Lord, I'm happy to be able to tell you of one piece of excellent news...... the heat from the fire at the manor house warned the ground, so the daffodils have come up 2 weeks early !!!" |
