Inspired by Angel's thread, what's the daftest bidding war on ebay you've been involved in?
I've only had the one, as I tend to buy it now. However, it was for a rare book I wanted to complete a collection. When it got to £143, I called it a night, as the other guy obviously wanted it more than I.
The book was a Howard Baker facsimile copy of issues of the Magnet, the only one out of the one hundred I don't have. I've never seen it anywhere else, before or since. I'm now awaiting the winning bidder dying and it coming on the market again. |

I use ebay a lot. My philosophy is that there will always be another one along soon, though I accept for a rare item it might be a long wait.
I don't get into bidding wars, I decide what the max is that I would pay for an item and put that amount in with about 5 seconds to go. This gives other bidders no chance to counter bid, unless they're using sniping software. If I win it, great (obv it only bids up to the amount needed to win, not necessarily the max amount I've entered), if not, wait for the next one to come up.
Bidding wars just push the price up, great for the seller though.

I can't remember ever getting into a bidding war on eBay.
I usually use a sniper site, set my maximum and then forget about it until after the auction. That way I never get carried away.
I also don't get involved in driving the price up. |

eBay can be dangerous !!
I buy quite a lot of stuff mostly retro Nintendo gear, signed stuff by my favourite bands and precious metals
I avoid paying VAT on silver by using eBay, but you've gotta get your max bid in very very early |

I've created a bidding war! I sold a certain CD for £430 a couple of years ago, which had over 200 bidders from all round the world. Sold it to a guy in Hawaii. |

I also sold an old door handle from a land rover for nearly 50 because 2 people got in a bidding war it was worth about half that

I'm not telling I'm still searching every charity shop and boot fair in the vain hope of a repeat find - it only cost me 50p to buy. |

It has been well documented on here of the time I got back from the pub after a few beers and got into a bidding war for a fucking six foot tall plastic palm tree.
I won the fucker too.
When I sobered up it, and after it was delivered, it was too big to hide from Kate and I've been subjected to ridicule on many occasions since. |

sticking poisoned pins in an effigy and thinking up all manner of horrible deaths probably won't speed up the process ... I think you might be in for a long wait |

I once got into a bidding war for a pub sign and was all smug that I had won
All thoughts of victory quickly disappeared when it turned out to be a laminated doll's house sign the size of a fucking stamp!
