I think it's a crap advert.

What on earth does a bloke in heels and a tight denim shorts with a big arse have to do with Financial matters?

I think this is a prime example of making an advert stick in the mind rather than it actually having anything to do with the product / service that it is supposed to be advertising.

Then again, the financial services sector is difficult to advertise.

Take Meerkats for example...

Absolutely brilliant, and challenging some old closed minds...

And I love the underlying metaphor...!!!

There is something in the corporate world known as "Owning mental Real Estate".

OR:

"brain pixel space"

The ROI makes it worth it.

If someone asks you for a price comparison website, what's the first thing you think of?..

Often times, it's NOT actually YOU whose business they want, it's who you're potentially going to tell.

Word of mouth marketing.

the fact YOU have remembered both those and effectively advertised them means the ad guys have done a great job!

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Very often I can recall adverts, (because they are funny or interesting or whatever), but I can't remember what they were advertising or which company.

Meerkats I could tell you the company. Heels 'n' shorts, I know the ad but wouldn't have been able to say what it was for.

Any I think it's both funny and a little disturbing.

I think the original person being quoted here could star in the follow up ad, where instead of modelling jean shorts, he would be displaying his finest moody pants!

True, but that is only half the job.

they haven't made me rush to buy their products and so, ultimately, they have failed, as surely the whole point of a promotion campaign is to attract more business

You're missing the entire point of Advertising.

TV ads costs thousands PER second.

Do you subjectively believe they HAVEN'T thought it through?...

Oh dear oh dear....you are not the definitive guide on success. Advertising is not about getting people to rush out and immediately buy their product. In the main it's about brand exposure and awareness. The proven psychology is that we remember the brand at the point that we are ready to buy, therefore insteasing the possibility of engagement and ultimately buy. We are all at different stages of a buying decision, this is where the intangible effect of a brand awareness campaign serves to imprint on our subconscious.
