I'm with you. If someone's best way of connecting with me is to call me Babe, I don't want to know them. Babe is a pig.

This came up last week and personally I have no issue with them, I wouldn't call someone babe etc

I just see love, dear, duck, cock, pet as a way of informally addressing someone you don't know.

Each part of the country uses a different word.

I was in morrisons a few days ago and the woman on the deli counter who served me called me, dear, love and sweetheart in the time it took her to take my order, prepare it and hand it to me. No problem at all, she was just being polite

It's all about the context in which its used.

I lovingly call my mates dickhead but could also start a fight pretty easily using the same word in a different context.

Wife's pet name is spunky. More of a personal habit of hers than a pet name though but it fits nicely.

Correct, it's the context in which it's used....& chatting someone up calling you "chick" is different than a little old lady handing you a bacon butty over & say thanks "duck"....hence "pet names" on a sex site forum
