Winter cycling anyone?

"So winter is almost upon us. Does anyone cycle through the winter? Share your experiences and clothing/equipment successes or failures."
I commute three days a week and do so all year round. Unless there is snow on the ground I'm on my bike.

My commuting bike is is a dolan fxe with full length guards and as my cross bike is in bits that's the only one that gets used in the winter unless it's dry and there's not loads of salt and crap on the roads. As I only ride for fun it suits, I'd be using gears more if i still raced.
Decent gloves, decent overshoes, winter tights and a decent Winter top. Personally I go for assos or giordana although I'm tempted to try sone of the decathlon kit as I run in their kit and it's excellent so I guess there cycling stuff is too. Oh and off road shoes rather than road is my choice |

yeah me, got myself waterproof pants, can’t remember the brand name but the waterprroof is only on the frontside, keeps my legs nice and warm, i cycle all year round in all conditions, ice obviously is the scariest conditions, come off a couple of times when i’ve hit the black ice and the bike has just slid from under me, i so 28 miles a day commuting. |

I have a friend who cycles to work in shorts all year round but he does use waterproof socks in the winter. Conversely I'm wrapped up like a mummy. Head-band to keep my ears warn, good gloves, overshoes if it's wet, a scarf. Many layers is better than a couple of thick ones. You don't have to go too fancy either, Marino wool is lovey but pricey whereas the longjohns from the Army and Navy are cheap but effective.

Very much this, layer up , Goretex shoes & covers, Goretex/ sealskins gloves & silk liners & helmet / skull cap & a breathable waterproof, (no such thing actually exists but some ok stuff out there.

Keep knees warm,mudguards,do lots of my riding gravel tracks or mountain bike in winter,went round carron forest/windfarm n kielder when we had all the snow,was amazing,always have lights with me in winter,bit of preparation and routine maintenance n keep riding,beats old days,wool kit n ever ready lol lamps  |

Read Rule 66 of the Highway Code first...
As per Dorset police...
In the past we've received lots of comments about the rules on cyclists riding in single file or two abreast so we wanted to clarify... ????
? There is no law which prevents cyclists from riding two, or even three or more abreast, just advisory rule 66 of the Highway Code.
? Rule 66 is not well drafted, because it starts with the words 'you should', and later says 'never ride more than two abreast'. 'Should' is advisory, but 'never' sounds like it's directory, leading some drivers to assume that riding more than two abreast is illegal when it isn't. Doing so is contrary to the Highway Code and can be presented as evidence in a prosecution for cycling without reasonable consideration for other road users, but the entire context would be relevant (was it a minor road, was there a lack of consideration for another road user or was the road empty).
? Cycling more than two abreast, though not recommended, is not illegal.
? Rule 66 further advises that cyclists should 'ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends', however the interpretation of this rule undoubtedly causes problems.
? Cyclists often ride two abreast for safety reasons, whereas some drivers believe cyclists should single out to avoid delaying motorists, forgetting that motorised users don't have enhanced rights to the road over cyclists.
? Cycling UK agrees that there are times when cyclists should single out, but it's safety that should be the over-riding factor when making that decision and considering the rule 66 advice, not whether the driver behind might have to wait a few seconds before overtaking. |

Tend to go out occasionally in the winter - it's wind more than anything else that would stop me. As to clothes...something very highly visible is the most important consideration: having said that, I do live in an area with official forest tracks, so tend to stay off road in the winter a bit more than in the spring/summer/autumn |

I cycle through the winter, I wear the same thing I do in the summer....shorts.
You warm up after a couple of miles and skin dries quicker than clothing.
Last year I rode straight into a black wheelie bin that had been blown over. Didn't even see it until I'd hit the deck |

Well the winter doesn’t stop me although I’ve fallen out of love with road cycling recently and gone back to MTB instead. I definitely love mountain biking in the winter. |

Yes dont really ride in summer, love to hit the DH sections & trails on muddy wet cold sunday mornings then home to a hot bath light the fire and munch slow cooked winter food .... lifes simple pleasures |

I'm a roll down the hill to work and push it back up it kind of gal
Rain or snow I'm out there.
It mainly sucks and I arrive at work freezing and my bottom half is usually wet (not in a good way)
And vow to buy a car every year at the start of September

I have a cross bike on slightly fatter tyres for winter and specialised off road spds with neoprene overboots and merino socks but my feet still get frozen and let’s not even talk about wet gloves - it’s the one thing I miss about free plastic shopping bags - wrapping them around your socks and gloves to keep the icy rain off. The trouble is it pisses down in the south west and even my fancy gore tex jacket gets wet through the stitching - time to spend more Mamil money I guess lol |

winter cycling is more fun..just recently got back into it..bought myself a laperre bike..awesome bike...sandwich bags on over the socks keep the feet dry..i have 3 front lights now..all producing over 1200 lumans each..2 on my handle bars and 1 on my helmet...been hitting all the woods and tracks ..coming home covered in dubs and shit..ace fun!!!!

Need to get back out on my Giant TCR Road bike. Had a blast on my Anthem Mountain bike the other week. Couldn’t walk for 3 days cos I was that sore. Never had an issue when I was riding 3-4 times a week. Haha. |

I'm cycling to work every day and so far wasn't too cold with ordinary clothes, a headband and running gloves :D
I'm cycling by the canals 25-30 min one way.

My riding companions are wimps and as soon as the temperatures drop they get on their turbo trainers.
Jesus turbos are fucking boring. The thrill I get out of riding is mostly speeding along and exercising OUTSIDE! The feeling of speed, setting yourself targets, checking your Strava.

I used to cycle to work, work uniform with waterproof trousers over the top, my big hivis jacket, with company bodywarmer underneath, two finger cycling gloves I got from Aldi/Lidl or my winter motorbike gloves.
My composite toe capped work boots, a wolly hat and paintball mask. |

There are just as many drivers that are twats than there are cyclists. It always seems that the cyclists get the blame. I agree from your point that is dangerous. You should treat the style of road with common sense. Cycling is a social event and can be boring when cycling in a single file peleton |

Ive just bought a ribble audax 7005 winter bike. Strong and sturdy and quick as well. I plan to use this and spin classes to keep my legs spinning through the winter. I find decathlon gear the best value around and the padding is bad either. Although i splashed out and have a castelli alpha ros jacket. Worth every penny. And in bright orange colour great for being seen. |

love winter/cold weather cycling. not much fun when the bike throws a chain at 11.30pm and its -3c. pin fell out of the chainbreaker so thought quick fix chuck a screw in. worked wonders for 3 pedal rotations. ended up with a 6 mile walk and a full rear drivetrain replacement

Been out there 3 times this week... 26, 23 & 42 miles.... Out again Christmas Day, 27th & a 50 mile group ride 29th.... If you've a winter bike with Mudguards and flashing lights for the low sun levels what's stopping you....with the right lycra kit and baselayers there is no problems |

I remember vividly going for a 100 mile ride in Feb 2010. It was bloody cold anyway when I set off but about 25 miles in the wind whipped up and it started leathering it down.
It was then that in a Surrey country road I got a dreaded puncture. It took me an age to even get the tyre off as my fingers were numb and I could barely see due to the rain coming sideways into my face. I reckon I was there over 30 minutes wrestling with that wretched bike.
I decided not long after that cycling wasn’t for me

i cycle all year round to commute to work, 14 miles one way, it’s very rare i’ll not cycle, weather has to be really dangerous for cycling (heavy snow and snow on ground) for me to use public transport. |

Most of the pedals can be adjusted to make it easier to clip in and out of. Also if you use the shimano plastic cleats you can buy different ones that give you more or less lateral movement before you unclip. Don’t be afraid of them, just remember to unclip when you stop or you look like a bellend when you fall over. |

If not why should that be the case. Lycra shorts come with built in pads which makes it more comfortable to cycle in. That's why I wear mine. |

Christmas Day ride for me....27th ....then a 52 mile social ride on the 29th....then after that Tuesday 1st out with 2 milf's in lycra while the kids are at their respective dad's ....life is hard |

I use a Mountain Bike with a good set of road tyres. As for clothing I wear an old pair of quality shorts (for padding) with a pair of winter running leggings over the top. On top I just layer as it's way to remove items when you get hot |

I had that on my last two club rides. End of a great ride about 5 miles from home two punctures.
the following week just left the coffee shop at the start and puncture so abandoned. Luckily it kept air once I pumped it up until I got home.
Job for today is to rebuild the bike again after its Christmas break. |

Nope, love the idea and admire those that I see out but sadly experience tells me in definitely a fair weather cyclist! Sorry but that's the truth out there... |

Used to love cycling till I nearly got wiped out by a Corsa. I’d have been less mad if it was a nice car.

I’m keen to get out. Two new bikes as replacements for mine that were stolen in December.
In fact I ventured out the other day hoping to do two hours but the gears have not been set correctly.
So, I struggled for 20 mins then returned to try and fix the gears. Fuck me! It’s like a black art.
Anyone able to fix shimano front derailers? |

Try useing motorbike gloves or padded work gloves.
The main thing is to wear gloves larger than you need as when you grip the handlebars they tighten up over the knuckles which reduces their effectiveness |

I'm going to order some- my fingers froze and I couldn't feel them at all 
The rest of my body was OK as I was wrapped up in layers.
It's -3 tonight!

Just fucking slap on a massive coat, or a Regatta one, they’re really good, couple pair of glothes, warm socks, and ride out. Legs might be cold but generally thanks to the muscle you should have in the thigh area due to cycling, they shoukd warm up and be right as rain in no time |

Falling slowly IS fun, falling on a tarmac road at 60mph when surrounded by HGVs is not as much fun. |

These still exist, but motorcycle gear is not really "breathable" enough for cycling. There are similar types of thermal inners and different weights of proper cycling gloves available to make keeping warm easy enough. I have commuted in temperatures of -10 and worse and never found the temperature to be an issue. Layering helps... but riding hard generates heat from the inside too.

I use silk liners & waterproof socks...but still get cold fingers & toes, I cycle fast & hard, sweat like a good 'un....& my hands are still cold & I gradually get colder as I stand around (outdoor work)...layering is sometimes an art.. |

Decent long sleeve base layer, thermal cycling jersey and water proof jacket.
Neoprene socks and gloves (sealskin, Aldi or Sports Direct).
As for headwear, skull caps that cover the ears or a peak cap that is waterproof that is really snug and has a thermal lining. |

I believe they were all outdoors, apart from the last 15 miles. He hates the turbo trainer with a passion, it’s just a means to and end sometimes. He loves being outdoors, riding his bike.
