We were talking about that with our daughter a few days ago.
This original, along with The Witches and Return to Oz was pretty dark stuff for Kids entertainment back in the day, particularly the latter, but Watership Down wasn't an ordinary fluffy bunny story was it. |

My big sister took me to see the original when I was around 5, when Bambi's mum died I screamed out 'Noooooooooo' and burst into tears which set everyone else off.
I couldn't put myself through that again!!! |

Thought about watching it for old times sakes...until I saw it was in two parts and decided to forget it. Think I'll save my time for watching Mary Poppins in the cinema instead...loved that as a kid |

Thought about watching it for old times sakes...until I saw it was in two parts and decided to forget it. Think I'll save my time for watching Mary Poppins in the cinema instead...loved that as a kid "

I only saw Bambi as an adult and I couldn't see what all of the fuss was about. Watership Down, I saw it when it first came out, I've never seen anything, not even PD that comes close, to this roller coaster of success, tragedy and struggle, never mind the politics/religious back story, Frith and his covenant.
The first 10 minutes of Arizona Dream 1993 (Johnny Depp)comes close to this sort of impactful writing. (The wolf scene). An underated film that makes perfect sense to me.
The artwork at the start reminds me of Aboriginal Dreamtime, lots of brown with white highlights.
Here's a question you never thought you'd need to ask, let alone answer...'What would happen if Quentin Tarrantino was give free reign to make an animated cartoon, for children, who weren't thin skinned?'.
I think we know that answer, Working title 'Reservoir Dogs', becomes 'Damn Bunnies'.
Just think if this whole story was rewritten in WWII and Kehaar was a German lorry driver...Spielberg might be interested.
We need more childrens' stories that hit the high bar like this. The cast of actors made this film, what it is, just like the Hogwarts franchise.
I'm doing an English degree and this book and film is going in my list of influences. |
