Homosexuality is illegal in a surprisingly large amount of countries.

The subjugation of women and modern slavery is also surprisingly prevalent.

But let’s keep selling them weapons and using there businesses

There's a movement to boycott all the hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei. This is fairly easy for me to get behind as I can't afford any of them.

Should be shown on travel Maggs and advertising for holidays like unpleasant pictures on your cigarette packets that says homosexuality is illegal and women's rights are not represented and allow people to boycott countries who have oppressive regimes.

Its just a deterrent and stoning wouldnt be possible as the burden of proof is quite simply way too high. It’s practically impossible for that to occur in any case due to the criteria required by sharia law.

I agree, only a few short years ago, many on this site would gave ganged up on bi guys and it's only more recently that better acceptance has happened.

Don't forget that our grandparents generation were happy to agree with the Americans, Russians and Germans that homo sexual deviance means that gay people were relegated to nonhuman status, ripe for medical experimentation.

That's why after being liberated from concentration camps, gay people came back to a prison cell in the UK. No state of Israel or financial compensation for those poor souls.

Nationalism is here - ignore it at our peril.

It is quite reasonable to suggest we get our own house in order, but it is already way better than Brunai. Could it be better, hell yes, but it doesn’t mean we have to accept this abhorant policy. We should boycott, we should exclude, in the same way as we did South Africa to stop apartheid. We should not just shrug our shoulders and accept this - it should have consequences.

What people forget is that Islam, Judaism and Christianity are prayer to the same God of Abraham. It took us 1900 years to stop they've had much less time to change than us and I don't need to remind anyone that the absolute ruler of the uk is also head of the church, is from a family of jihadists (the crusaders) and gas access to hundred of nuclear weapons.

This is interesting....LGBT vs Islam....

how will this end up i wonder?!

Does one group have the right to dictate to the other about what way they observe their religious teachings and ideology? Does the other side have the right to punish and persecute and actually barbarically ki ll someone for sleeping with a person of the same sex? or as in the case recently in Paris where a trans woman was beaten, abused and sexually assaulted in the Republic Square by a crowd of Algerians....

for the record i'm neither LGBT or Islamist and i would never endorse or encourage violence or hatred towards a particular group or religion....however i will enjoy watching the left going into a tail-spin trying to work out which side to support. A bit like the arguement in many primary schools today about ....should kids be taught LGBT studies? Moms for islam say no but LGBT folks say yes....what a conundrum!

No it’s not

It’s about the intolerance of the Islamic faith. You are suggesting that LGBT do things to Muslims and Muslims do things to LGBT ers in a sort of battle. Why don’t you show us how clever you are by listing all the stuff that LGBTers do to Muslims ?

It isn’t about left or right, it is about tolerance and respect. I would argue that in the same way that Sex, Race and Ethnicity are regarded as equality issues, they take precedence over Religion. We live in a Secular state, so Religion is subsidiary to equality, it needs to be taken into account, but it does not take precedence over equality.

Clearly Brunei is very different, to that extent it is fair to say that we do not agree as a country with their policies. So what should we do, well object, boycott, restrict trade and make it clear this is not acceptable in a civilised world - clearly other countries are similar and we need to call them out also. Being part of a large trade block, like the EU would make it easier to show a cohesive policy and would be more powerful in getting the message across.

If we did that to every country where homosexuality is illegal, we'd have to cut aid to most of the developing world.

I think we all know that , but since most countries that need help adopt the same policies regarding homosexuality , we would have to cease trading and helping them too wouldn’t we ? Policy is policy after all . That’s what the point of Clem’s post was .

& you conflated Brunei with the developing world. Most countries that ban homosexuality do what Britain did up till recently - turn a blind eye (not saying we were right by the way), and I am not condoning them for that. But I am suggesting we focus on the extremists. Soundbites uttered from military training grounds are not the answer...
