Should prostitution be legalised?

I watched an interesting program about it where those special helpers that drive around to help the women like a drop in centre, they interviewed those helpers and they said that it would be safer for everyone if it was legalised as fewer would be in danger, whats your view? I agree.

Here and there

Personally I think it should be made legal. For as long as it remains underground and in the shadows then sexual exploitation by criminal gangs will continue. We need to protect sex workers, not criminalise them.

Our current legislation leaves prostitutes on the fringes of society, making them vulnerable to violence, poverty, and health risks. It prevents sex workers having the safety of working with others and having legitimate protection. By keeping it illegal the law is putting those already in a vulnerable position in an even more vulnerable position.

Legalisation and oversight are needed. Too many sexual assaults go unchallenged in the sex industry because the character of the sex worker is always questioned. Some regulations and guidelines would help security of the individuals providing the service and a standardised safer service for all. I read recently about a woman selling her body for £10 a time to feed her kids. That's horrific to me even though I understand that people will do anything for their children.

With a proper legalised and regulated body you can undercut and reduce the power of those that exploit for personal gain. Just look at how badly it went for Capone after prohibition ended.

Legalise, provide regulations and enforce them with actionable, real world consequences for those who try to subvert those.

Back under my rock I go

I think no matter what you will always get a top and bottom end of market. Maybe it will move it generally a bit more upmarket but there will still be people at the bottom exploiting and hurting men and women in grotty, dirty, dingy places. Not much else to say about it really is there.

Much the same a legalising recreational drugs. It will have benefits for some but there will definitely be losers.

Prohibition of anything rarely works, just funnels money to criminals.

Better to legalise or decriminalise, and then deal with the problems, using money raised by taxation.

"No.just more poor trafficked women rather than pretty woman fantasies"

Human trafficking is more prominent because prostitution is illegal. If it's legalised it can be monitored more easily.

Not all prostitutes want some rich bloke to sweep them off their feet...many do it purely because they enjoy lots of sex and the money's good!

So it shouldn't be legalised because it wouldn't benefit everyone?!

Human trafficking and asshole pimps will always exist.

Legalisation of sex work makes it harder for these assholes to operate. And easier for the women being abused to report crimes. Surely helping keep some safer is better than none?

How many women want to sell sex against men who want to buy sex? The disparity would be huge, therefore supply and demand means prices will rise.

Once prices rise above what a lot of men can afford, the temptation is to then bring coerced women in to supply that trade. We’re back to square one.

Prostitution isn’t illegal.

Things such as kerb crawling, pimping/owning an agency/brother & more than one escort/prostitute working in one place is illegal.

The actual act of paying for sex isn’t.

I think it should be regulated, it’s the oldest profession & it’s not about to die out soon.

I think if it was regulated and things properly put in place to prevent trafficking, coercion & pimping, it would be good.

Why is it disgusting and despicable to pay for sex?

People have needs, some of them want their needs met specifically rather than joining sites like this & having to play the long game.

Paying for sex, or being paid for sex doesn’t mean you don’t respect yourself.

That’s a very outdated view in my opinion.

That’s one possible scenario, but not certain.

Another scenario is that customers don’t want to go with the illegal ones where there’s always a chance that the thug with a knife will be behind the door and so they just won’t get the customers.

I did watch a documentary series about prostitutes in Sheffield, or Leeds. I forget which, but there had been a young prostitute murdered in the area they work in. I think in certain areas at certain times of the day it was being made legal to prostitute in order to try and make things safer.

I think because it was a small area all the women were using the same space so it was becoming harder to earn the money they needed.

I think overall it would make things a lot safer for these women.if it were legalised.

I think we see here often enough that an erect prick doesn’t have much of a conscience.

A lot of the girls (streetwalkers) are on drugs. Nobody is going to employ those in a regulated brothel. Along with the price problem, it’s a mix with an obvious outcome.

I think if you legalise the temptation is for government and agencies like the police to think “job done” and withdraw support for the illegal workers.

The law should target the punters not the girls. Cut off demand and supply dwindles.

There used to be a red light district in Kent. Used to be 20 odd girls each night. About 10 years ago they put up ANPR cameras and started writing to owners of cars that had triggered the cameras a few times in a night. I imagine a few takeaway delivery guys got a shock!

Now you might see one or two girls, but usually none at all. The area is so much nicer too.

I do think legislation and regulation is necessary to protect those sex workers but equally those most vulnerable in the industry at the moment probably will still fall through the net and are least likely to be employed legally. Hence not really solving the problems or issues they may have often the reasons that bring them to the work in the first place.

The streetworkers will just have moved elsewhere.

There will always be a demand for paid for sex.

If it was legalised (as it is in some areas of the US and Australia) then hopefully it would be a safer option for all participants.

I agree with the above but I don't think legalised regulated prostitution alone will stop hazardous and exploitative prostitution. Simply because unregulated prostitution would always be cheaper and be easy to set up and start earning. So I wonder if as well as legalising safer, regulated prostitution we should also heavily punish the users of non regulated prostitution? Hopefully this would kill the market for unregulated prostitution by providing punters with a safe legal option and make the use of unregulated prostitution very unattractive due to tough sentencing if caught.

Having said that it still doesn't some of our deeper social issuses. I have no problem with prostitution but all to often its exploitative and a product of limited options. If regulated prostitution is hard to get into and there is no market in unregulated prostitution would be removing a line of income to some of the most vulnerable and powerless in society? And if so how would these people earn money instead? For me the existence of exploitative prostitution is a sign of a the inequalities in society. So maybe we should focus on the wider socio-economic issuse too.

Yeah it should and so should cocaine and heroin, because as long as cocaine and heroin are illegal they will remain underground and criminal, we should also legalize murder because that is underground and criminal too and if it was legal then it wouldnt be.

No correlation since prostitution isn’t illegal in the UK.

There are just some aspects of it that are.

Drugs are a problem here, as is what surrounds the supply of them. Some intelligent thought to curing that with perhaps legalising some of it is worth investigating.

Murder, probably less so. But thanks for your input

I think it should be legalised and not seen as a crime. At least then the individuals would be safe and don’t have to hide and do their business in the dark.

They are providing a service that has a market otherwise they wouldn’t do it. So because there is a demand they are available.

I’ve never used those services myself but I’m sure they are lovely people.

Yes. The ladies would be safer and it could be taxed in the same way everyone else who works self employed is.

There is no evidence that support prohibition of any items including sex drugs or alcohol everything should be legalised so it can be properly regulated and made a safe as possible because people are still going to do it illegal or not.

It should be made legal and registered.

The sex workers could class themselves as self employed and coukd unionize. Giving them more rights under the law and workers rights too.

The brothels run as a workers collective , with health benefits and protection for the women and men who work there .

And as america has shown, even when you make it legal, people still buy from illegal sources. Illegal alcohol, and are rampant in areas where it is legal. In areas where prostitution is fully legal and legal whore houses are run, you can still get an underage illegal prostitute cant you?

Ironic "

All sorts of people do it for all sorts of reasons. Lots of my friends are. Precarity in work, disability etc My best friend had a glittering career ahead of her, got a brain tumour and now has no capacity to remember things much. Nobody wanted to employ her and disability wasn't enough to live on. What would you do??

As long as there is oppression, financial and sexual etc, there will be demand and supply.

They've been treated better than some on here....

Yes, definitely. Brothels are legal in Germany, Holland, Australia and some USA states and many others countries too. They should be legalised here, for the protection of the working girls and punters, and as a source of tax revenue. We know a woman who worked in an Amsterdam brothel when she was younger and said she felt safer there than working as a prostitute in the UK from her own house.

But they will not be legalised. No UK government will be brave enough to risk headlines like "Government encourages depravity! Shock horror!"

We talked to women from The English Collective of Prostitutes who had a stall at the Big Green Gathering a couple of years back. The collective exists to provide a safer working environment for the girls and as they say, they are providing a basic public service used by not only single men but by single women and couples too. As long as it's their choice, why should the state get involved?

I don’t think anyone is saying that regulating prostitution would mean no illegal goings on.

Prostitution isn’t actually illegal remember.

Of course there would still be people who have to do things illegally, the amount in my opinion would rapidly decrease though.

"No.just more poor trafficked women rather than pretty woman fantasies

Human trafficking is more prominent because prostitution is illegal. If it's legalised it can be monitored more easily.

Not all prostitutes want some rich bloke to sweep them off their feet...many do it purely because they enjoy lots of sex and the money's good!"

The thing is, in countries where it's legal trafficking has not decreased....make it legal to sell but still illegal to buy.

I understand what you're saying but are they REALLY working by choice or is it because the economic system leaves them with sex work as the best of a bad lot. Several women I spoke to on a project a couple of years ago said it was a bad but best option for them. Many were students who had to work to survive but full time work meant they fell behind in coursework, some were single parents for whom full time work was impossible because they couldn't afford childcare. If they weren't under that pressure they said none of them would have chosen sex work....

I have escort friends who do it out of pure choice & freedom, one runs her own business and does the escorting in her spare time, another works full time as an escort and her boyfriend has his own company. Both of them intend to do it for as long as they can.

I don’t doubt there are many that don’t do it out of choice though and more of a last resort. Some gravitate from escorting to “sugar daddy arrangements” and vice versa.

Our friend certainly became a working girl voluntarily, she enjoyed sex and found it a good way to make money. Her boyfriend worked in Amsterdam at the time and she found it easy to get into prostitution, she started by working in a small brothel part-time then moved to a larger one for more regular shifts.

"prostitution added £10bn to the uk gdp in 2018. government would love to legalise, or rather the tax man would.

don't get hysterical about gangs etc, most 'ladies' are independent, very discreet and run themselves in a very professional manner.

If they’re running themselves in a professional manner, then they’re already paying tax.

"

I think if you're going to do things with people you don't fancy then not paying tax is a fair and reasonable benefit!

A simple change to the law that allows two folk to work together out of the same place would make a difference. You get classed as running a brothel if you do. It's simple safety. FFS.

It's generally legal and should be totally illegal, supporting workers to share accommodation - which isn't permitted.

A lot want us to move to the Swedish system - funny it's Shag asking - where it's illegal.

It's not legal in Northern Ireland too! I see this as so very wrong. Adults should be free to do with their body as they wish, as well as spend their own money on their choices.

We have existing laws that work against trafficking of people and slavery, as well as for child protection..

We have very dangerous restrictions of adult liberty underway - the UK porn law this year is an example. Politicians are too eager to control women too.

Escorts continue to work in Northern Ireland and Sweden of course but should be supported to work openly.

Doesn't matter either way, nearly all hookers are online at hotels or rented flats, so whats the difference, legalising will only increase the EU workers to come here, as most are from Ro or Po, pay 40 for 15mins, usually a pimp takes nearly all the cash per meet, most dont even speak english, making it legal will only increase the trade to the uk. better off making it part legal if they pay tax and register all clients payments through a online system

Of course it should, you look at countries like the Netherlands and Germany and see how it's controlled.

Legalise and educate.
