We need a new bed has anyone got any recommendations, I prefer memory foam top half type mattresses. I've tried the simba type ones and couldn't get on with it

Also the base needs to be robust !

Bought myself a water mattress a few years ago.

Most comfortable bed I've ever slept on

Personally I hate memory foam; it just gets hot and sweaty.

If you have a decent budget check out John Ryan by Design online. Their mattresses are excellent and their website has a huge amount of info on mattresses even if you don't want to buy from then.

For instance I didn't know that the appropriate firmness of a mattress is dependent on body weight (not your personal preference).

Re: weight that's what we struggle with I'm a big chap ! And Lou's only light !

I don't want two singles and I prefer a king sized bed.

Budget wise I'm not bothered as I'm happy to spend on something decent to ensure a good nights sleep

(Lou) Headboard bangs on the wall but we need one as I like to be tied up it squeaks and it is broke which could be why it squeaks!

If you're going for a traditional mattress then the more pockets it has the better. Over 3000 pockets if your budget can go that high.
