There are many criticisms of the way China has dealt with their outbreak, and yet WHO appear reluctant to put a voice to the global concerns. Taiwan has one of the lowest infection and death rates and yet WHO are not able to fully recognise their data. One of the criticisms Trump raised is the WHO are too China centric. The comparisons with flu were being made by health professionals and epidemiologists at the time, and it's what they were telling the public. I seriously can't believe that this video, and many videos like it, are somehow implying that Trump is an idiot for not being able to predict the future of an unprecedented event. This fear led to the delay in reporting at the local level. This fear also led to being able to enforce a total shut down when the alarm was raised. Are the publicly released figures in China probably massaged? I suspect do but have zero evidence to substantiate this. That said a lot of intensive research work from China was shared very quickly. Remember that the WHO has to be a diplomatic organisation as much as anything else. It has to get the right data and it has to save lives. Consequently, it is unlikely to raise criticism publicly but it will in private. It is also likely to have the real data to work with. Attached here is a response I found to the many mainstream media "Trump Derangement Syndrome" clips claiming that he "changed his mind many times on coronavirus and called it a "hoax". I think it explains things pretty well:

The WHO only declared a pandemic on 11th March. He made a statement THAT SAME DAY and issued travel restrictions when most of the world didn't impose them. At the time he imposed these restrictions, the Italian crisis, which was the FIRST and BIGGEST crisis of coronavirus in the West, had only just started, yet he was HEAVILY criticised and called a racist and extremist for imposing the travel ban.
He acted absolutely appropriately given the information they had at the time. As information and the situation changed, so did the response. THIS IS THE MOST LOGICAL PROGRESSION TO HANDLE ANY SITUATION. As you get new information, you change your game plan, especially for an event which is completely UNPRECEDENTED in living memory.

South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Germany have done this. What's the result? At the time when travel advice was given, contact tracing without a travel ban was proving effective in South Korea and Taiwan. That is what the advice was based on. A full response. Banning travel is correct if you are not planning or are unable to provide an effective response because, say you don't think that there is a problem or you have dismantled your country's ability to mount an effective response. | |||
