the land of saints & sinners

With the SNP looking to take an overwhelming majority in th Scottish parliament. A recent poll in N.I. favouring a border referendum.

Yes Cymru have seen it ranks swell from 2000 at the beginning of 2020 to now over 17000 with Plaid Cymru promising a independence referendum if they win the next Senedd election.

Have years of mismanagement of the regions by successive governments caused this rise or has Brexit sharpened these fault lines.

How stable is the future of the Union?

Not a blame game just your predictions.

BTW - Back in 2016 I’m on record stating that Brexit would cause a rise in regional nationalism and a greater clamour independence.

The question was .... How stable is the future of the union?

I personally don't see the union as stable at all, I don't think it has been for quite a while.

Personally, I'd say let each devolved administration have a referendum but realise it's not quite that simple.

Some would argue Scotland had their chance - I'd argue the terms have changed since.

NI is a different kettle all together - Do they vote to leave the union and join a united Ireland. Or do they vote to leave the union and stand alone?

The only union i could see existing in ten years time would be the United Countries of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, Northumberland, Cumbria and Yorkshire.

With a much diminished England full of bitter people mumbling "we won, get over it, stop being mean to us".

i doubt very much that the conservative and unionist government would increase the potential for tax havens with land borders to exist on the periphery of england.

The GFA outlines the process and the terms and conditions for a Irish unification.

I don't see it as pessimistic as you do, times have changed and Brexit has worked in favour of a unification.

Nobody knows the answer to the OPs question until there’s a vote, or two.

I can say that I really don’t care if countries can’t see the benefits of being in the British Empire and want to leave. Fine, go.

We are now free to forge new alliances more in line with our national interests.

There's an irony that Brexit as in 'leaving a union' has some sort of snowball effect, not on other European countries (like some predicted) but on uk countries.

Personally i think Scotland have a chance of independence, Wales know they cant make it on their own without England and NI will stay in the union as it would have to be a very large majority in a referendum to leave. I cant see it just being a majority vote again like it was for brexit it would be a recipe for a return to violence if it was not an overwhelming majority.

Exactly, a total waste of money, You wouldnt say that if you considered yourself British like the falkland islanders do and was just left by your country to become homeless.

seems so

"Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?" A referendum on political status was held in the Falkland Islands on 10–11 March 2013. ... On a turnout of 92%, 99.8% voted to remain a British territory, with only three votes against.

"Nobody knows the answer to the OPs question until there’s a vote, or two.

I can say that I really don’t care if countries can’t see the benefits of being in the British Empire and want to leave. Fine, go.

Who are the members of the ‘British Empire ‘ ?

Anguilla

Bermuda

British Antarctic Territory

British Indian Ocean Territory

British Virgin Islands

Cayman Islands

Falkland Islands

Gibraltar

Montserrat

Pitcairn Islands

Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha

Saint Helena

Ascension Island

South Sandwich Islands,

It’s not the Jewell in the Empire, no, no one lives there

It isn’t much of an Empire, just out of interest how much moment do these places contribute to the British economy?

Money

Actually “moment” was acceptable usage, it’s a synonym for importance. I’d have stuck with it, makes you look like you have a bigger vocabulary

Back to the question...

How stable is the Union ?

And what are your predictions for its future amid the rise in regional calls for independence.

"

Put us out of our misery OP, what’s the “right” answer?

Irrelevant, the cost of ‘defending’ less than 3000 people is too much and not necessary.

You misunderstand the costs involved. That is a base level of military funding that treats the Falklands, much like Belize or in the old days Northern Ireland, as an ideal training ground for our troops, re convoys, landings, close air support etc.

It is not an additional cost, training has to take place somewhere. 60 million is peanuts.

Exactly, a total waste of money, You wouldnt say that if you considered yourself British like the falkland islanders do and was just left by your country to become homeless.

Are they very patriotic over there?seems so

"Do you wish the Falkland Islands to retain their current political status as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom?" A referendum on political status was held in the Falkland Islands on 10–11 March 2013. ... On a turnout of 92%, 99.8% voted to remain a British territory, with only three votes against.

Why do they have to travel 3,000 miles for training? As Foxi has stated, they could do all that in Scotland and why is £60 million pea nuts? "

Do you want to volunteer to ask the Scots what they think about that? Can you film Nicola’s reaction, could do with a laugh?

Do you have any concept of how much military equipment costs? One sidewinder missile retails at about 0.5 million quid.

"Nobody knows the answer to the OPs question until there’s a vote, or two.

I can say that I really don’t care if countries can’t see the benefits of being in the British Empire and want to leave. Fine, go.

We are now free to forge new alliances more in line with our national interests.

Who are the members of the ‘British Empire ‘ ?

Anguilla

Bermuda

British Antarctic Territory

British Indian Ocean Territory

British Virgin Islands

Cayman Islands

Falkland Islands

Gibraltar

Montserrat

Pitcairn Islands

Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha

Saint Helena

Ascension Island

Tristan da Cunha

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia

Turks and Caicos Islands

South Sandwich Islands,

It’s not the Jewell in the Empire, no, no one lives there

It isn’t much of an Empire, just out of interest how much moment do these places contribute to the British economy?

Actually there’s a vast number of British and foreign Finance businesses registered in at least seven of those. We all know that whether it’s 3 or 33 percent of British GDP it will never be of sufficient “moment” to satisfy the whiners.

Wow, as high as that? Did you know it costs over 60 million a years to ‘defend ‘ the Falkland Islands, which works out at £20,000 per inhabitant really that much ffs give it back to the argies who gives a fuck about a piece of rock thousands of miles away

Why do they have to travel 3,000 miles for training? As Foxi has stated, they could do all that in Scotland and why is £60 million pea nuts?

Do you want to volunteer to ask the Scots what they think about that? Can you film Nicola’s reaction, could do with a laugh?

Do you have any concept of how much military equipment costs? One sidewinder missile retails at about 0.5 million quid.

And? Ok, do it somewhere in England, do you realise the cost of transporting troops and military equipment over 3,000 miles for training

? Your argument is non sensical

Fire sidewinders over Milton Keynes? Are you insane?

Is Milton Keynes the only option ?

It’s not a bad option TBF now I think about it.

There are over 136 uninhabited islands that are part of the British Isles

How many of those are not protected by the RSPB, EH, NT, etc etc ?

I don’t know, why don’t you find out? Let me know when you do

You specifically asked about the British Isles, hence I answered about the British Isles.

I agree, particularly post oil, that the Falklands is not particularly useful or productive, but I could say that about a lot of places. We still need it and we a duty to it.

Firstly, god is a fictional character.

Secondly Boris's response to the pandemic has been woeful, by any measure. Our death rate is ridiculous.

Thirdly, under his reign the Tories have handed over £20 billion to their pals and neighbors for PPE, much of which was unusable.

Fourthly, as soon as we put our leaders beyond critisim, and don't allow them to be held accountable for their actions, we're left in a dictatorship.

Fithly, his government had to be shamed into feeding starving children by UNICEF and a footballer. Hardly something Boris should be commended for.

So while you may not wish to question any of this. The rest of us absolutely need to retain the right to express dissent.

"Clearly 5 was asking too much"

1. He was sometimes funny on HIGNFY

2. He made the most of his extremely privileged position in society that he was born into.

3. He's excellent at avoiding scrutiny. (Eg the time reporters were outside his house to ask him about the racist remarks about women in burkas, and he made them tea, and they didn't bother questioning him).

4. He's a good liar, he's so brazen about it that people seem to believe him. Has no sense of shame.

5. He will make the next PM look good by simply not being him. In the same way Biden is winning purely because he's not Trump.

How's that?

I personally can't see it happening except for NI. That's been on the cards for the last 15 years. The problem there is I don't think Ireland can afford it and the North doesn't have the financial input needed to keep it afloat. 62% of the workforce are in governance, that shows it cannot sustain itself.

Scotland had its chance, lost it but Sturgeon won't accept it. They don't have the oil resources they said they did in the first referendum. The oil market is slowly collapsing with climate change being addressed.

Wales may vote but won't actually go again nothing to really sustain itself independently with.

They each have to declare independence for two years, have their independent currency from the UK. I read Sturgeon was looking into buying into another currency but that is a massive risk as they have no control over what happens with that currency on their own economy. If that currency takes a dive then it's all hell breaks loose. Coupled with the recession that the pandemic is having the timing couldn't be worse.

After the two years and only after it can they then apply to the EU as an independent state to join, and there is still no guarantee they will be admitted.

Just some of my thinking on it

The United Kingdom is over. Let’s just say it the way that it is. It’s just a matter of time.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the final scene of a British Empire that was forged on Exceptionalism and subjugation.

Everything evolves, everything changes and the ironic “domino” claim of Brexiters is now highly likely to come to fruition in our lifetimes - just not in the way that they intended.

It truly makes me sad that so many English people are still unable to see that the English exceptionalist attitude has not only lost the Empire, but will also lose the United Kingdom.

This is a presumption now, the SNP have the impetus to because brexiteers couldn’t understand the woven nature of our union and how our bonds made us invincible.

It’s been 5 years since the Brexit referendum. The collapse of the Union is not going to happen in a year or two. Give it another 2-3 years and people will start talking about rejoining the EU. Just my opinion.

We didn’t have the opportunity to vote to leave England though! If an English Party can decide to have a vote on a British issue, then the Welsh should be able to have a vote on a Welsh issue.

Arguing that we are better off out of the EU just allows Wales now to argue we are better off out of the UK. It is a patent lie that we are better off out of the UK, we are just out’ish. I don’t think Wales will be better off out of the UK, but it will be ‘sovereign’ and we can have red oassports!

Who said the Welsh can't have a vote?

You said 'you just voted to leave the EU' meaning the English voted to leave and no one else.

If the devolved Welsh administration want a vote to leave the UK then it has to start there.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what your point is.

I think it was the previous poster who mentioned 2-3 years. The average trade deal takes 1.5 years according to a quick google.

Just my opinion. In my opinion you are talking rubbish In another 2-3 years we will have joined cptpp have a free trade deal with India (she is there today to get it started) and be far less dependent on the eu and their red tape. Business will always find the best and easiest way to make money something the eu will find out in the future when their sales to the uk diminish.Just my opinion.

Why will it take 2-3 years to join the CPTPP,

I think it was the previous poster who mentioned 2-3 years. The average trade deal takes 1.5 years according to a quick google."

I see, then we will have a deal in place with CPTPP in 2 years. Why did Farage say that CPTPP was following ‘the EUs prototype for world governance ‘? And why are we joining another trade bloc when I thought we were going for ‘bespoke trade deals’ ?

"I always find it funny when Brexiteers point out how Scotland, Wales or NI couldn’t cope without England. You just voted to leave the EU for no good reason - why can’t everybody else not have the chance of leaving you?

Hypocrites

Erm.... wales voted to leave too

If the devolved Welsh administration want a vote to leave the UK then it has to start there.

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure what your point is."

I find it strange that Brexiteers are not promoting the opportunity for each of the UK’s 4 nations to seek independence. After all, as I understand it, we should all have the choice to be sovereign and decide our own future.

So whilst I will declare myself pro Europe and Pro UK, I also feel strongly that as we have “thrown of the shackles” of Europe, the same choice should be available to “throw off the shackles” of England.

If you live in Cardiff, Belfast or Edinburgh then Westminster is at least as bad as Strasbourg. At least the EU used to invest in the Regions...

"Narrow-minded ..... a person or persons with a limited outlook who is unwilling to consider alternative ideas, perspectives or thoughts. They are right and there's no discussion because they have no real argument.

Horseshit, brexiteers were not looking outwards, they were looking inwards, terrified by lies fed by its leaders, the hordes of immigrants invading and taking jobs, the bullshit of being a new empire to rule the waves.

We have become a diminished nation, not just financially, but spiritually. Our strength lays in our unity, together we do great things, our innovation our ability to create and prosper, not for individuals but for everyone.

How the hell are we going to be called Great Britain without the home nations?

If brexiteers are content with OK England, that is something which is frankly sickening.

why do you assume that Wales would want to break away from the UK and also Scotland.Last time Scotland voted some thought they would leave but did they no simple

This is a presumption now, the SNP have the impetus to because brexiteers couldn’t understand the woven nature of our union and how our bonds made us invincible.

Brexit caused this, and I don’t want to see our nation breakup like the balkans did in the 90’s.

"

Sorry to say Brexit caused this shy on stupid. The factions were there long ago. I personally felt it was being eroded due to the EU removing identities over decades. One reason I voted Brexit was to try to give opportunity to galvanise our strength. SNP got a no vote even after reducing the voting age to 16 to try and gain the young voters and they still got a no, yet not happy they want to continue and ignore a democratic vote. Sadly they are not representing the people, but a smaller minority who voted to leave. They have lied about their value of natural resources and thankfully many have seen that, coupled with the collapse in oil as alternatives are being push it's weaken it even more.

I raised this before before Christmas but they have to link their economy to another currency and there little choice but which ever one they can, they then become at the mercy of that other economy for a minimum of two years, after which they can make application to the EU. There are a lot of boxes they have to tick before consideration and there's no guarantee they will be accepted. Burn their bridges and they could be floating alone. I can't see the EU bringing any more on board unless they can get a large contributing member to join to help prop up what's been lost. There's going to be big changes ahead in the EU for it to consolidate itself.

Maybe my understanding is incorrect. But you haven’t helped me by pointing out which bit! Westminster is effectively an English Parliament now. If England had its own devolved Govt and then a super Parliament existed that sat above all 4, looking after Foreign Policy, Defence, etc then it might make sense - but I think this isn’t what Brexiteers want...

west minister is not an english parliament controlled by english people.... this seems to be some sort of myth on this site!

What is Parliament?

Parliament is there to represent our interests and make sure they are taken into account by the Government. The Government cannot make new laws or raise new taxes without Parliament's agreement.

Parliament is made up of people we have elected and people who have been appointed. They sit in two separate Houses:

The House of Commons, where all the people we have elected at the General Election work, as MPs, for the next five years. This includes people in other political parties, as well as those in the winning party who were not chosen to be ministers.

hope that helps

Because only England doesn’t have a ‘devolved parliament’, Westminster has become the defacto English Parliament. As a consequence Government policy is dominated by England. It does not step up from England to look at what is best for Britain. In many ways this is what Brexiteers complained about the EU. I really think that Westminster should be the UK Parliament, but England needs its own devolved government. At present having Mayors with Power is not the right answer, it creates ‘robber barons’ for those that have them, but leaves those unrepresented, well unrepresented.

So how about an English Parliament in England - could be anywhere, but not London or the Home Counties? Then reduce the size of both the House of Commons and Lords. Ideally bring in PR for electing MPs rather than FPtP.

I mean what could go wrong?

I haven’t suggested losing the monarch, so UK can still stand. But devolution needs to apply equally to all regions. It can’t apply more or less in each one.

I would probably suggest per capita as that seems more equitable. The key thing is that each region is fairly represented. I think PR is needed rather than FOtP for Westminster as only this way will the votes in each region matter equally.

So the United States of Britain?

I haven’t suggested losing the monarch, so UK can still stand. But devolution needs to apply equally to all regions. It can’t apply more or less in each one.

It's certainly an interesting concept.

How would you make up the government of the UK though? Eqchbof the 4 countries get the same amount of reps? Or do we work it out per capita? Per GDP?

I would probably suggest per capita as that seems more equitable. The key thing is that each region is fairly represented. I think PR is needed rather than FOtP for Westminster as only this way will the votes in each region matter equally.

See, the issue with Per Capita is that it will still be in your eyes 'English' because England outlays the other 3 countries in terms of capita.

What does ‘See’ mean? Do you think London should have more power than Cumbria?

No I don't. I personally don't think any region should have anymore power than others.

But, how do you get around the issue of people thinking a central government will be skewed one way or the other?

As I said, I think it's an interesting concept but I don't feel it's as simple as you may believe "

I certainly don’t think this is simple. As Politics is ultimately about power, it means getting those in Power to vote to allow that Power to be diluted - given their lack of altruism, I wonder how that will go

I genuinely am a fan of the Union. I don’t like unbalanced devolution, it leads to real and perceived inequalities. I’d rather no devolved government as it feels worse than we used to have. But Pandora’s box is open, so I think England, Scotland, Wales and NI should have an equal local parliament in terms of what they cover and govern.

Ireland have been arguing for years, Scotland had a referendum before Brexit and Wales voted for Brexit. So basically it's f_ck all to do with Brexit
