EU punish Brits for Brexit

British immigrants sent home from Spain and other would be immigrants turned away at the airport as Spain uses the 90 day rule against British Citizens.

https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1417852/expat-news-brexit-latest-spain-return-eu-residence-rules

Seems so unfair especially as a lot of these people voted for Brexit but did not expect the rules to apply to them.

What Boris made the 90 day rule? "

He championed brexit which removed the rights of British citizens to stay, live and work in the EU.

We knew the rules. People voted for Brexit anyway.

Probably best to blame everyone else though.

If you're amazed that I don't know the number of tourists in Spain from different countries around the world. You will be ultra amazed at all the other shizz I don't know.

Bang on the money - that is what it is lol

The entire premise of Brexit was to break free of the EU - so now that has happened how can it possibly be any surprise that the rights and privileges that we had as members now don’t apply?

I mean, it’s almost like a project fear was actually project reality all along.

Yet more British exceptionalism to go with the German car manufacturers and the Italian Prosecco producers

If every Brit migrant was to be sent home from Spain and there were no British tourists to visit Spain

It would constitute 1.8% of a loss of Spanish GDP

Hardly a “reliance on British tourists”

Nevermind the fact that the British are now a third county under what was negotiated

Is this a surprise to you now or did you pass it off as “project fear” when it was being negotiated?

Jeez, these people know less than we gave them credit for! Britain formed the rules for 3rd Party countries (us), we chose to Brexit, Boris forgot to read the details, his Dad became a French citizen to avoid the rules (I hear Boris is considering the same!

No they won’t be begging.

The Germans, Dutch , Swedish and now the Russians again will happily fill the gap. The Russian tax system has been relaxed so now it’s ok to own a second home again. We don’t hold all the cards in Spain either so forget that nonsense. Maybe in the 70s and 80s.

I’ve got a villa in Spain Chris . I know

As most of these people complaining are older and living on pensions the private medical is something they simply can’t afford . Add to that Private medical in Spain isn’t a cover all, the less well off simply can’t risk staying.

Some of them voted to end free movement and got exactly what they wanted . They should be happy and smiling on their return to the U.K. Maybe Farage will get some happy photos at Doncaster airport and basque in his success.

Sadly others happy to vote remain in Spain were caught up in others ignorance of the consequences.

Using the term woke (which means anti racist ) as an insult could be seen as being racist, what do you think?

Think you’re proving something else to be honest.

Yeah I bet the Spanish can't wait to have the Russians invade lol.

While thing is a complete non story debunked last month by people who know.

Get your simple bits of paperwork in place and there's no issue.

"

This.

Costa Blanca Spain...

It was only to be expected that the EU were going to chuck the toys out of the pram once Brexit was finalised.

Wrap it up any which way you like but it really is punishment for telling them where to stick their federalist dream.

Now they are flapping around digging up obscure rules that haven't been enforced (on anyone) for years.

Truckers ham sandwiches anyone?

Banning shellfish from Britain's "polluted" waters. The same "polluted" waters that they fought tooth and nail to be able to carry on fishing.

Of course it is only to be expected that the Spanish would exploit Covid to flex their muscles. Why not? At the moment they have nothing to lose, there would be no British holidaymakers anyway.

Let's see how they behave when tourism opens up again.

Benidorm and Marbella empty and Bodrum and Marmaris full might just focus a few minds.

Its very simple if you wanted to live in Spain there was plenty of time to apply for the appropriate paperwork just like it was for eu citizens wanting to stay in the uk. Now if people were too busy drinking sangria and laying in the sun rather than jumping through all the hoops Spanish bureaucratic departments require thats up to them. I know lots of people who have and have had no problems whatsoever.

This story is days old and most likely bullshit anyway. There is no problem in Spain if you have done what you should have regarding residency. This is just another divisive brexit thread, some on here seem to like posting these, no debate, same personal attacks by the same people, same people trying to ram there version of what is and what should be down everyone else's throat. Sooner it makes 175 and closes the better.

Yeah. Some British expats were surprised about the impact of Brexit on their lives abroad.

Those people specifically, didn't seem to know what they voted for.

The issue was not about tourism though was it? I have no doubt that tourism will open up again, but the only issue I perceive will be the Daily Mail “Fury at....” (passport controls, health insurance checks or something like that). The big issue will be to come when the ETIAS system comes into play and people start to get rejection notices because of historical blemishes and misdemeanours.

This issue is about British property owners in Spain who are now faced with a number of issues that are so obvious, we even discussed them right here on Fab over the last several years.

90/180 - prevents snowbirding over the whole of the winter.

Health Insurance - insurance by default excludes pre-existing conditions and most people who can afford a home in Sin (or France/Italy etc) are going to be at an age where they will (at best) be starting to get health conditions. Their insurance will start to become more expensive snd they will have exclusions.

Their insurance will start to become more expensive snd they will have exclusions."

Hardly controversial to pay for your healthcare if its a system you haven't paid into. Fuss about nothing.

Love that phrase "historical blemishes and misdemeanours" lol.

Which of us hasn't blemished our record by committing armed robbery for example? And Spain won't then let us in now? Bastards lol

Nothing is wrong at all.

I imagine however that there will be a not insignificant number of people who previously enjoyed a hassle free weekend in Benidorm or Malaga might just start have difficulties.

Except that before they didn’t need to and this thread is about changes.

Suddenly having to pay for private health insurance, for example as a couple in their 60’s and prove a minimum income is a big change.

Then again - fuck them, and fuck the fishermen too, and the farmers and as for N Ireland - fuck them too - we will just promise them a bridge or something. Fuck everyone who doesn’t believe in unicorns and sunlit uplands and fuck them even if they do and they subsequently become casualties of the cause.

Exactly why those “freeloading” pensioners have to come home . You do know with free movement they got free healthcare to a point. That’s the problem they now have to pay for their own .

Not all those on the costas have deep pockets whether they are ill or not!

It was cheaper to live on their pensions in Spain as houses were cheaper and more plentiful.

Less clothing as it’s hot!! Less heating bills etc etc

Nicer climate and plenty of fresh healthy food.

Sad they now have to move back here to the cold expensive U.K. . But as I said a lot voted for it so will be happy.

And their healthcare was far from free, its part of what used to cost the UK 9 billion a year.

Spain, Lancs

I live in Spain and have residencia. It was free and was easy to get.

Anyone who spends more than half their time in Spain can apply for residencia.

With residencia comes an obligation to pay Spanish tax. That has been the same, both pre-Brexit and post-Brexit.

Accordingly, many have chosen to 'live under the radar' to avoid tax.

To protect their legal rights people are now having to 'break cover' and apply for residencia.

Some of these people are choosing not to pay Spanish tax and are returning to the UK.

The 90-day rule wasn't changed by Brexit...but some bitter Remainers are trying to sow confusion

I thought that the only people that this has an impact on are those who either failed to apply for residency or fill in the relevant forms prior to Dec 31 st .

The only impact would appear to be those who made the decision not to work but not declare their income for tax . One person openly admitted to the press that he was working cash in the hand . Tax dodgers and cheats can expect little sympathy .

How to apply for residency in Spain

All you need to do is make an appointment online at your local Oficina de Extranjeros (foreign office). To this appointment, you’ll need to take your NIE (if you already have one), your passport, your padrón (this is the equivalent of a census certificate and can be easily obtained from your local town hall), two passport sized photos and a filled out EX-18 application form. Make sure to also bring photocopies of everything to be on the safe side. Before your appointment, you also need to take your EX-18 form to any bank and pay the corresponding tax which in this case is 21,44 euros.

If you don’t have a NIE, don’t worry! You will be issued with one at the same time as applying for residence in Spain.

Healthcare for expats living in Spain

If you’re a British expat living in Spain, the situation is a little different. You are entitled to healthcare in Spain if you meet one of the following requirements as an expat:

• you receive a UK State Pension or some types of long-term sickness benefit

• you are a working or self-employed resident in Spain and paying Spanish social security contributions

• you receive a Spanish state pension or benefit

• you are a permanent resident in Spain

• you are a child resident in Spain

• you are a UK posted worker in Spain

• you are under 26 and studying in Spain

The easiest way to access to the Spanish healthcare system, said to be one of the best in the world, is to become a resident in Spain. This is a fairly simple process and is worth the paperwork: find out everything you need to know about residency in Spain after Brexit.

Spain, Lancs

I've very limited sympathy for people who haven't applied for residencia.

The Spanish and UK governments are acting in a spirit of reciprocation to protect everyone's rights.

The Spanish government has said officially that they are not actively looking for people living illegally...but at the point at which they find them they have to adhere to the law. It means they can apply for residencia and be liable to Spanish tax or, after 90 days, they can return to the UK.

I think that's very fair.

Some people, a minority, are choosing to return to the UK.

Even then they can continue to spend six months a year in Spain.

There's too much political nonsense being made about this

"I've very limited sympathy for people who haven't applied for residencia.

There's too much political nonsense being made about this "

Exactly and my guess is most of them who are complaining have never or intend to spend 6 months a year in spain anyway.

There’s a lot of debate over gammon being racist or not still. But applying common sense and a bit of pragmatic thinking, using an insult referencing ones skin colour has always been considered racist, so why not when it applies to white people? ‘Woke’ has nothing to do with the race of those called ‘woke’, and is about their ideology and world view, not a physical immutable characteristic.

There is no debate here. Stop hijacking the thread.

It’s certainly used as an insult. I didn’t say it wasn’t. A lot of people see ‘wokism’ or intersectionality as a madness and counter productive. I’ve seen you insult and denigrate plenty of people on the forums for not having the same world view as you so it’s no different. But ‘woke’ as an insult is certainly not a racist term.

Let it go and get the thread back on track.

"It was only to be expected that the EU were going to chuck the toys out of the pram once Brexit was finalised.

Hardly controversial to pay for your healthcare if its a system you haven't paid into. Fuss about nothing.

That's your prejudice about the sort of people who you think voted for Brexit.

And their healthcare was far from free, its part of what used to cost the UK 9 billion a year. "

Ha ha not notice the sarcasm Chris you must be slipping. Did you miss the fact I have a villa there ??

Whether we pay here or there in tax or memberships we pay but it was free to the end user ie the mostly elderly. Now to stay they have to pay. The costs were cross charged between countries using the health card I system I believe but open to being corrected by someone with better knowledge .

"I've very limited sympathy for people who haven't applied for residencia.

The Spanish and UK governments are acting in a spirit of reciprocation to protect everyone's rights.

Obviously you are not personally affected so it’s not bothering you.

Regarding your points.

Those who would like to stay also need to prove wealth or income which they can’t in many cases don’t have.

As for leaving your house empty for six months that in itself is fraught with risk.

Squatters have very strong rights in Spain so trying to get them out is not easy and definitely not quick . Empty furnished houses attract squatters .

Just another question

Where do those coming back for six months live?? A lot of people can’t afford two houses. So have no choice but to move back.

Before if you got treated in Spain they wanted your E111 and billed the NHS accordingly.

As an expat, you are currently entitled to free state healthcare if you are: Resident in Spain and work in employment or self-employment and pay social security contributions or a state pensioner.Hope this clears up the confusion about people who have gone down the legal route and have residency.

Gammon is a pejorative popularised in British political culture since around 2012. The term refers in particular to the colour of a white person's flushed face when expressing their strong opinions, as compared to the type of pork of the same name.

I despise midwittery but this time I have no other option - where’s your source for the contention that it’s an insult ‘primarily used by racists’? Or is it just an opinion (not a problem if it is of course, I just want clarity)? "

Yeah obviously I am not going to try to find some published piece to prove this. And presumably some people use this word "woke" out of context.

Woke: alert to injustice in society, especially racism.

Why else would anyone use this as an insult. As if not being racist is a bad thing.

Where does it say it is racist ? Back to the OP selecting random things from a newspaper now dear oh dear just admit you was wrong ffs.

Gammon is a pejorative popularised in British political culture since around 2012. The term refers in particular to the colour of a white person's flushed face when expressing their strong opinions, as compared to the type of pork of the same name.

It isn’t racist, do you think the term ‘white as a ghost ‘ when somebody is frightened is racist ?

"There’s a lot of debate over gammon being racist or not still.

Woke ‘alert to injustice in society , especially racism ‘ . Why would you use the term as an insult ? Btw, I didn’t hijack the thread , someone suggested it was racist, I disagreed I am sure that is allowed

Gammon as an insult is certainly not a racist term . Back to the OP

I think we've all agreed the OP is made up nonsense not worthy of further discussion "

How could you be so rude about the Express ?? Sacrilege for a Brexiteer surely!!!!

As we all know some Brexit voters definitely had no clue this would happen.

Business had no rules until the week before and so a load of ex pats were definitely not up the list of priorities . Then again the only priority this government had was get Brexit done . What Brexit actually was they blatantly had no idea.

Spain, Lancs

People wouldn't just fly to Japan and announce that they were going to live there.

Why do they think they can do so in Spain?

The Spanish have been generous. They allow people to stay for up to six months per year. Any more though and people have to apply for residencia.

I think that's fair.

As I’ve outlined further up the thread. A lot of people see ‘wokism’ as cultish and a form of mania. There are stark contradictions within the idea of intersectionality that ‘woke’ represents bordering on hypocrisy. The denial of evolutionary biology in some cases, the sexualisation of children, racial grievances and segregation coming back....a lot of people see these things as regressive. So yeah, they use woke as an insult. I’d argue it’s less to do with a desire to ‘want’ to be racist and more a frustration that the very vocal minority is dominating the meek and mild majority with head blowing nonsense.

Costa Blanca Spain...

"It was only to be expected that the EU were going to chuck the toys out of the pram once Brexit was finalised.

Why will it stop tourists from going to Benidorm or Marbella? You got what you voted for , stop moaning "

I'm not the one doing the moaning.

As I said "only to be expected"

I expected the EU to chuck the toys out of the pram and they have done it. Nothing to moan about.

Personally (away from on 24 hour rolling news that is) I've hardly noticed Brexit. A couple of extra forms to fill in for the town hall in Germany and bacon is a bit more expensive here in Spain.

I think it was always pretty obvious what they were going to do.

I expect (note "expect") that it will be a bit shitty for another year or so for some things then things will settle down.

Merkel will be gone soon and possibly (hopefully) Macron not long after.

Always look on the bright side of life.

And the vocal majority are definitely those who want to silence, cancel and remove freedom of speech from those they deem (dictionary definition of) woke.

We have very different perspectives.

Talking about any of the following: "The denial of evolutionary biology in some cases, the sexualisation of children, racial grievances and segregation coming back". Is likely to have you labelled "woke".

It's just another method used by the far right to attempt to discredit anyone with a progressive viewpoint. Which is why I always take the dictionary definition. For reference, look at any of the threads on here with "woke" in the title.

They actually voted in many cases for what they are now complaining about saying they didn’t know what would happen so how did they actually know and yet vote the wrong way for their interests . You’re not making sense .

Also the deal wasn’t done until the last min so please explain how anyone knew this detail??

Or are you as with many Brexiteers just talking the one stop story of the reason for your vote which was immigration? You had no idea what the deal was so I’m sssuming you just guessed at everything else?

Therein lies your perception of it in your response tho. You seem to be quick to see any criticism of ‘wokism’ as the exclusive domain of the ‘far right’. I don’t. I think it’s perfectly legitimate to criticise and pull apart ideas that I and other critics find regressive. I’ve not seen the attempted restriction of free speech here that you refer to. My experience has been the opposite. Myself and others I’ve talked to privately have been reported and blocked for being critical of ‘wokism’.

But ultimately I don’t see using ‘woke’ as an insult as racist. I do see ‘gammon’ as racist as it’s used to specifically insult a particular race or skin colour, which is a protected characteristic (even if you want to believe Britain is a white supremacist state), ergo at its most base level it is racist. I don’t think it’s productive however, to insult anyone in any discussion. To me that’s when the debate is lost.

I think most who voted leave in Spain we’re looking at the closing of borders as a way to keep immigrants out of the U.K. and to re-live some utopia of a kingdom that only ever really existed in their imagination. Why would they vote for something which would ruin their lifestyle?

A lot who voted leave then woke up to what stopping free movement meant which was they couldn’t move freely either which was a total shock.

There are all types of people in Spain so I don’t think education was the issue I think ignorance of the facts and reality of the benefits given to them by being part of the EU was blatantly missing form the leave rhetoric.

The Spanish have been very generous in ignoring brits living without any serious attempt at residency but now they are imposing rules we wanted back in place as other third countries have. We really have no ground for complaints. It’s just more of the wonderful oven ready deal. Some bloody oven that was!!

It is such a shame for those who would like to stay but can’t . I genuinely feel for them as it’s a good way to live compared to being in the U.K. for a lot of people.

People get blocked here for all kinds of things. I've been banned for the opposite reasons you have.

Criticism of ideas, even anti-racism is good. But the reality is, we get insulted and criticised constantly for not being racist. People have argued that they're using some reimagined meaning for the word "woke", which is silly. Just use normal words to describe what the objection is to someone's view points.

If you choose to look at the threads with "woke" in the title, you'll see people getting angry and confused about a school kids poem, a story in the Express about Rule Britannia being banned, which turned out to be bullshit.

The people who start these threads have absolutely zero interest in the real issues that exist in this country, and have allowed the right wing media to distract them with these non-stories. The same people who participate in these anti-woke rants are also the people who don't think it's important that Floyd George was killed. As an example.

So while people use "woke" as an insult, I'm going to assume they're using the dictionary definition.

I don't use "gammon" and don't have it used against me, so I don't have much to comment on it.

I’ve seen you insult and denigrate plenty of people on the forums for not having the same world view as you so it’s no different. But ‘woke’ as an insult is certainly not a racist term.

Let it go and get the thread back on track.

"Woke" is used as an insult primarily by racists who no longer feel like they have safe spaces to say derogatory things about brown skinned people.

Can't be racist, so they attack non-racists.

I despise midwittery but this time I have no other option - where’s your source for the contention that it’s an insult ‘primarily used by racists’? Or is it just an opinion (not a problem if it is of course, I just want clarity)?

Yeah obviously I am not going to try to find some published piece to prove this. And presumably some people use this word "woke" out of context.

Woke: alert to injustice in society, especially racism.

Why else would anyone use this as an insult. As if not being racist is a bad thing.

This is interesting. People on here specifically use the dictionary definition of woke as an insult though.

I don't use "gammon" and don't have it used against me, so I don't have much to comment on it."

Rule Britannia was banned. The student who wrote it was banned. Ergo Rule Britannia is banned by the University.

A lot of us are beginning to wonder why you are so obsessed, utterly obsessed, by race.

So while people use "woke" as an insult, I'm going to assume they're using the dictionary definition.

I don't use "gammon" and don't have it used against me, so I don't have much to comment on it."

No that’s fair enough. Everyone’s experience here is personal.

I just don’t believe ‘woke’ as an insult is racist. I do believe ‘gammon’ is. Neither of them need to be used IMO.

"There’s a lot of debate over gammon being racist or not still.

Woke ‘alert to injustice in society , especially racism ‘ . Why would you use the term as an insult ? Btw, I didn’t hijack the thread , someone suggested it was racist, I disagreed I am sure that is allowed

This is interesting. People on here specifically use the dictionary definition of woke as an insult though.

You know how hate crime legislation works in the uk don’t you? One person can report you using the word ‘gammon’ as a racially motivated insult and the police are obliged to record it. Your perception of it doesn’t matter, the reporters does. There are recorded ‘hate incidents’ from people using the term as an insult already. But sure, insulting someone’s immutable racial characteristics isn’t racist

What are you on about? Do you know what gammon means? It’s is about a persons behaviour, a tiny number of people are gammons, based on their rage towards Brexit and perceived ‘woke behaviour ‘ a racial slur is an insult to everyone of that race. To compare the N word with gammon is ignorant and ill educated

It refers to the pallor of their skin too, generally white, middle aged men who flush red when debating (usually about brexit, which is where the term originated). The cognitive dissonance and wilful ignorance you're displaying is not only obvious for anyone to see, it’s stifling.

Grantham

Seeing how long the "woke and gammon" thread lasted, maybe its time to leave the labeling of people alone now?
