Strange that you didn't quote ALL the reasons for this?

50 tons a week? Over the whole of the tesco empire? Thats not even two trailer loads..... I remember the times when supermarkets used to bin thousands of tons of food!

Think you’re missing the worrying point of the report.

Tesco a company with very deep pockets and one of the most sophisticated logistics systems in the world can’t get trucks!!

For them to be admitting this is a signal to government.

Imagine how the lesser mortals in the food and drinks industry are coping??

It’s becoming a major problem . No drivers due to EU nationals going home. This driver shortage has been growing for years but the EU workers plugged a large part of the gap. They are not available now. Covid played a part but Brexit nailed the lid on the coffin.

The FTA and RHA warned about this but it was put in the project fear category. Well it seems yet another project reality. .

Wow the country is going to starve because we need two hgv drivers.

Remind me again how many are unemployed in this country, all those kids coming out of uni with social and media studies and no job, this is very little to do with brexit or covid it's to do with the politicians( of all parties) and media telling kids they all need an ology and a desk job yo be worthwhile, the last year has shown which section of the country keeps it going.

Erm why can't alternative modes of transport be used? I.e trains.

Or am I being too simplistic?

I realise that trains won't solve the issue on their own, but its a start.

"When did we vote to leave again?"

Brexit has very little to with this it's about people from this country working and the government of all shades encouraging kids to train for jobs that are available instead of going to uni when there isnt the demand for graduates. Remember your labour pal's education education education policy, it should have been training training training, at least the Tories are encouraging apprenticeships again. Too many work shy in this country. Sooner sit on their arse on the internet all day than get a job

Doesn’t work and trains are used wherever possible . Tesco have trains

One of the biggest benefits of HS2 is it will increase capacity for freight . Trains if they doubled in capacity still would only account for less than 10% of freight and most of that is heavy industry stuff like iron ore and aggregates or waste.

It has added to the problem but even with foreign drivers here before Brexit the shortage was growing. Average age of drivers is mid 50s retiring drivers will soon impact on top.

Drama Queen re starving comment

I agree the drive for degrees is distracted by pointless courses. We do need a better educated population to move into tech but looking at some degrees they are nonsense.

Also why is it universities can do a course in two years instead of three but need to charge nearly twice as much.

My kids had very low hours of lectures but still we paid the full £9k . My thoughts are greed and ridiculous overhead costs of the uni megalomaniacs.

I think we could learn a lot from the German system of streaming in vocational courses but they are given the same credibility as academic qualifications .

Most EU drivers are doing return drop offs on way back to the EU the EUs demands on customs means less of those driver are here taking our work. Dont believe the lies your told we have loads of UK drivers wanting work. Perhaps those complaining should offer fare wages to us who pay UK tax.

That 50 tons is nothing compared to what is dumped due to delays in UK /GB food coming into Northern Ireland caused by illegal internal UK customs.Forced on us by the EU. Illegal as our UK act of union states there must never be customs between the UK nations.

There seem to be a lot of job vacancies at the moment which are being blamed on Brexit, & I'm sure it is true.

However, these jobs all tend to be low paid, and zero hours contracts.

So we can't get crop pickers because noone wants to do back breaking work for minimum wage. Noone want to take part time bar / restaurant work on minimum wage & zero hours contracts.

Maybe we need to face reality and pay a decent wage. How many here, get no rights to sick pay, no pension contribution from their employer, get no holiday pay & have no job security when the next lockdown / economic downturn comes along. It ain't easy.

Fact is we all want everything at the cheapest price. That cheapest price comes at a cost......

also doesn't say why there's a shortage of driver's at Tesco might have something to do with Eddie only paying minimum wage after sacking or forcing old Tesco drivers to swap so could only get foreign drivers who now gone home as wages going up.

Interesting statistic from the RHA . 50 tons is about 6-10 truck loads of finished caged goods. Each truck delivery to a supermarket needs 500 cars to take the same products away.

Strange that you didn't quote ALL the reasons for this?

50 tons a week? Over the whole of the tesco empire? Thats not even two trailer loads..... I remember the times when supermarkets used to bin thousands of tons of food!

50 tons is 50 tonnes of food being destroyed .

How many on the breadline could have used this food ?

In the year 2019-20, Tesco had an annual figure of 67000 tons food wastage, after donations to charity.

Some went for cattle feed, but happily they are committed to reducing this figure further.

Link to Source of proof for your claim please

Otherwise its just guff .

"Wow the country is going to starve because we need two hgv drivers.

agree with all that mate they could even do a 3yr shorter than a two yr coarse it they worked decent hrs my youngest as been 3times since September it’s a joke

Interesting statistic from the RHA . 50 tons is about 6-10 truck loads of finished caged goods. Each truck delivery to a supermarket needs 500 cars to take the same products away. "

But Brexiteers wont believe any of that .

Theyare still dreaming about Nigels

unfulfilled promises .

Back to the point about tesco .

We are only 6 months in so 26 weeks

Well it seems yet another project reality. . "

Then they need to sack their logistics manager then. If they have the money, then pay for the drivers, it's called economics.

Sounds very much like Tesco want cheap underpaid drivers like those from Eastern Europe, pay decent wages and get decent drivers.

Yes, the RHA warned of this not now, but decades ago when the UK opened up its roads to EU hauliers.

The message is that this country needs to get back on its feet, pay proper wages, and not rely on market distorting foreign labour.

That time is here, and it will appear to cost more, but effectively just levels us up with the neighbouring countries.

By the way it is not a Brexit thing, ironically, even the rich EU states are complaining of lack of cheap drivers from Eastern European members, says it all really.

"Funny how quickly that gloating triumphalism vanished.

only to be replaced by the boomers default position of hate and intolerance directed at those generations that follow them

And of course blaming the eu.

Who's blaming the EU for a shortage of drivers? It's a shortage of those in this country who are willing to work that's the problem. Remind me again how many are unemployed in this country "

Its not cheap to get your HGV licence now and just cant go and get your class 1. Like everything in this country have made it hard work with all the extra red tape.

There is no extra red tape getting a hgv 1 at all, the process for application is exactly the same as it was.

Just hang in there until liz tuss cuts a few world beating trade deals with, say Turkey Brazil and india, the first requirement of a deal with these countries will be free movement of people so you will have a influx of millions of poor people from these countries, the UK will surely find a few thousand hgv drivers from among the millions of emigrants from these countries,

Another Brexit bonus, you can control your borders

Between me and my mate's we have 10 hgv and tanker licences.only two of us use them mainly because over the years wages have been cut due to European driver's.better working stacking shelf's no risk to license and better money some companies deserve what they get profit over wages.

That would be the biggest bonus if it happens across all sectors, no wonder all the socialists on here are so up in arms over brexit the reasons to vote labour will shrink even more.

Ireland is in the EU and we have a severe shortage of truck drivers.

Mostly due to the ever increasing costs of becoming a driver and very low wages.

"

From the Irish Trucker magazine:

“The skills shortage is made more severe as many firms have become reliant on eastern European workers to fill gaps, a recruitment strategy that is likely to prove more difficult in future, once the UK leaves the European Union.

It is estimated that out of the UK’s 250,000 drivers, between 43,000-60,000 are from the European Union. Earlier this year the Freight Transport Association warned that the availability of migrant drivers was declining.“

Looks like they’re also gonna have to put wages up, so the lowest paid in Ireland also benefits from Brexit

The imbalance of goods drove the U.K. hauliers away from international work not foreign hauliers. We don’t export as much as we used to since thatcher destroyed a lot of manufacturing As a result the U.K. haulage companies would mostly be running out of the country empty to bring an import in.

The primary loads come from the continent and so by its nature is brought by foreign hauliers . Nothing to do with allowing foreign hauliers in causing cheap drivers. We don’t have exports!!!!

The drivers employed in the U.K. are on the same money as U.K. national drivers. It’s a myth that it was cheap Labour. We employ them and they work hard without complaint but always on the same money. The Union reps would eat us alive if we used cheap labour.

The driver shortage is a Europe wide problem that’s true, however good wages brought Eastern Europeans to alleviate the problem a little in the U.K. it is now much worse here in the U.K. because the Eastern European’s have gone home. It has definitely been made worse by Brexit. One of our hauliers has had 40 drivers leave the UK due to Brexit. He’s in trouble.

U.K. nationals don’t want the work. They want 9-5 and a desk . It’s too much like hard work for most. It’s not just the money. The facilities for drivers around the country are appalling and getting worse. Shitting in a lay-bye because there’s not enough parking with facilities is not appealing at all.

Closing truck stops and services not catering to drivers in any real, way shows how little respect get have. Take a drive around South Mimms services one evening snd see the chaos caused by lack of truck parking. Remember by law they have to stop. So if they can’t park then it’s down some dodgy industrial estate without any facilities whatsoever.

It’s a Cinderella career but no fairy godmother on the horizon.

"Tescos throwing away 50 tonnes of food a week

Well it seems yet another project reality. . I think you are missing the point over 30,000 hgv driving tests have been cancelled due to covid which is a very large part ."

It had made a big problem worse but Covid isn’t the cause.

"Between me and my mate's we have 10 hgv and tanker licences.only two of us use them mainly because over the years wages have been cut due to European driver's.better working stacking shelf's no risk to license and better money some companies deserve what they get profit over wages."

The likes of Stobarts and Wincanton taking over the premium tanker work and slashing wages has brought the overall levels down that’s true. It’s not due to foreign drivers as most tanker driver outfits used to be full of nepotism so the foreign drivers wouldn’t get a look in. The drive for cheaper logistics from Tesco etc has put a lid on wages not the EU drivers.

The imbalance of goods drove the U.K. hauliers away from international work not foreign hauliers. We don’t export as much as we used to since thatcher destroyed a lot of manufacturing As a result the U.K. haulage companies would mostly be running out of the country empty to bring an import in.

And post Brexit market forces can now resolve these issues

Hmmm… I wonder if the driver shortage will spur the self driving vehicle evolution that is on it’s way? No truck stops needed. No working time regs. No driver to pay.

Seems like a no brainer for the supermarkets with their big haulage fleets,

Driverless is eventually coming, but as a poster above said, market forces will now make Tesco pay better, and indeed lobby better, for driver pay and conditions.

I had a few friends who drove for Fina in the 80s and knew of drivers doing car deliveries. They were pushing £40k 30 years ago. I think it was Tank freight and Wincanton that started the elite tanker drivers fall ..

I have to say the tanker boys had a high lung cancer rate though which wasn’t so great. Never a proven link obviously .

Drivers wages will go up . In the USA Walmart doubled the rates for drivers and fixed their problems but sucked drivers from other firms who had to shut.

Right now there are a few larger trucks being tested but it’s kept off the front pages. The payload will go from 28 to 34 tons and 2mtrs longer . Bigger trucks less drivers .

Driverless technology is here we just don’t trust it like aeroplanes . A plane can fly itself but not many people fancy getting on board without a pilot sitting there.

uk roads weren't designed to carry vehicles of that weight.
