Most people will pretty much say false to all of that, at the same time most people will struggle to name a less racist country than Glorious Britannia.

"Most people will pretty much say false to all of that, at the same time most people will struggle to name a less racist country than Glorious Britannia. "

That is true and is certainly my lived experience since coming here.

However the Uk can do better and should strive to do so.

Being less racist is still racist.

Its weird. In some ways we are incredibly welcoming to people from overseas and we are an island built on immigration, but there is without a doubt a nasty undercurrent of rampant xenophobia which Brexit has exposed and the current lot play on.

Oh no, we are being prejudiced to the virus now!

Surely it's a pretty sensible precaution to protect the population. One that should have been done properly ages ago.

We'd be in a very different position if we had. Might even be able to go on holiday to Europe, instead of them all talking about locking us out.

It's okay for people to receive verbal or physical abuse because the UK is "less racist" than other countries.

True/False?

It's not a problem that people have more negative educational, economic, legal and medical outcomes because the UK is "less racist" than other countries.

The victims of prejudice should not protest or highlight the matter because the UK is "less racist" than other countries.

As I have said in past threads…. Patting yourself on the back for being “least racist” does mean that racism doesn’t exist…….

So before there can be solutions… there has to be acknowledgement…..

Very true though I not heard people say it does not exist but saying its improving and going in the right direction. Wish we could just flick switch and it goes away but that's not realistic. Personally I'm glad we are in a country that's improving on the issue. Better than the other way around. Still get some that think discrimination is only relevant against folk of colour but that too seems to be improving too

The uk is not racist, however people can be.

Racism is not exclusive to any colour or race of people.

People will always have prejudice of some sort it part of being human,

Every one is entitled to peaceful protest in the uk, however it does not give anyone or any group the right to shout down any alternative opinions that they do not agree with.

There is a fine line between free speach and abusive language which can be perceived differently by every individual.

I would suggest the institutions and society of the UK are racist.

From education through justice, to business. In much the same way the UK is sexist.

The disparity in the stats bears it out. Proportionally more black people in prison, proportionally less black people at top universities, etc. Etc.

My view as an immigrant. Racism does exist. But it is not as bad as the media or the liberal left make it to be. In my three years living here, I have never faced racism myself from the British people. Most of my interactions have been friendly and welcoming. Only once I have seen another guy being asked to go to his own country by an angry old man while travelling in the tube. But that's the only incident I have seen in three years.

Some right wingers claim that racism doesn't exist at all, which is wrong. It does exist at some level and the answer to that is using education to make people open-minded from childhood.

On the other hand, left wingers tend to exaggerate and blame every damn thing on racism, which makes things only worse. Breaking statues and forcing people to take the knee is not the solution to the problem. It only makes matters worse.

To answer your question,

False

False

And adding to that, racism is not limited to White people. I have seen men from other races having racist view about White women. I have seen bigotry against the LGBT community among non-white communities. Is that a problem? Yes. Is the problem big enough to fill news channels and sports events with messages against this behaviour? No.

Totally agree that history lessons are very important and as you say not cherry picking. However it does not answer the question I asked

The question was asked in response to a statement from another poster that said people refuse to apologise for the country's colonial past. My question was how do people today apologise for the country's past. As said I agree teaching history without cherry picking is important (to all countries) but that does not answer the question

Follow-up questions

People from majority population who have problems in their own lives do not have time/energy to invest in problems of minority population. That doesn't mean they hate the minorities.

True/False

Just because a very few people are influenced by politicians and media, it is wrong to assume that majority of the people are influenced.

True/False

There is no way a government can draft a policy that satisfies every section of the society.

True, unless the minority population is blamed for their problems.

Some people are brought-up and encouraged to hate minorities.

True/False?

Just because a very few people are influenced by politicians and media, it is wrong to assume that majority of the people are influenced.

True/False

True. It is wrong to assume that, yet before election the Prime Minister wrote "as satire":

“No doubt the AK47s will fall silent, and the pangas will stop their hacking of human flesh, and the tribal warriors will all break out in watermelon smiles to see the big white chief touch down in his big white British taxpayer-funded bird.”

“It is said that the Queen has come to love the Commonwealth, partly because it supplies her with regular cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies.”

Powerful people using prejudist language "as a joke" does not normalise it.

True/False?

There is no way a government can draft a policy that satisfies every section of the society.

True/False

True. It is unnecessary to to satisfy a racist.

Government policy aiming for equality of opportunity and equal treatment is not a worthwhile goal.

The experience of an immigrant who rew up in a majority is the same as that of a minority who has lived their entire life as such.

Wow. So all those deportations uncovered by the recent Windrush Scandal were unnecessary if the empire was 50 years ago? Man, you're gonna struggle with all the points Fabio raised as well as mine.

Leroy1000, I personally am not looking for an apology. It won't make much difference and it would be empty. The history is more important and as we've just witnessed, people are still very dismissive.

Lostindreams, Racism exists. I agree with you on media response and don't buy into left/right responses when both are as bad as each other. The fact that you have experienced little to no racism as an immigrant is a true blessing. Personally, I've experienced a fair share and I was born here. It's important that people acknowledge your experiences and mine. So I agree Shortandshorter but accept that we still need to address the problems as and when they occur.

Should we ignore him because he is only one man? In my view he is better placed than most of us on here to speak on the subject.

Problems should absolutely be addressed as and when they occur. By my saying we should listen to lostindreams doesn't mean I'm saying because he hasn't experienced racism it doesn't exist. Just as you've pointed out that you have experienced it.

We need to listen more to those people (including yourself) who are better positioned to speak on the subject.

Just because I didn't reply to Fabio doesn't mean his comments were ignored. The point is proved in that I also didn't directly reply to the others either. Fabio started well tbf by saying there has to be acknowledgement and then went off ranting about stuff that happened in the past.

Maybe all the white people here weren't born in the UK. However, the thread is about racism, so unless you're saying that white folk can also experience racism then I'll gladly agree.

That's not what you were saying though, is it?

Perhaps more people should listen to his views on this subject.

We should only listen to 1 person & ignore

Those who have a different perspective ?

I didn't say ignore other perspectives. I said as an immigrant himself we should perhaps listen to lostindreams more.

Should we ignore him because he is only one man? In my view he is better placed than most of us on here to speak on the subject.

Ok so you just chose to ignore what other

people who came here from somewhere else said .

I see what you were trying to say .

Who have I ignored? I see Twisted and Rogue (born in the UK) have both had things to say.

I don't think you do know what I'm trying to say

But you ignored Fabio

Were all the white people commenting born here ?

Im a London Native so you can safely include me

Just because I didn't reply to Fabio doesn't mean his comments were ignored. The point is proved in that I also didn't directly reply to the others either. Fabio started well tbf by saying there has to be acknowledgement and then went off ranting about stuff that happened in the past.

Maybe all the white people here weren't born in the UK. However, the thread is about racism, so unless you're saying that white folk can also experience racism then I'll gladly agree.

That's not what you were saying though, is it?

But you felt the need to point out Lostindreams

Posts & made a statement saying people should take note

Of what he wrote , as if other people wouldnt have

Also read his points & staements .

You picked his words, but ignored Fabios & as far as i see you

Ignored CLs words as you didnt say people should listen to what they have said .

Especially as the the thread wasnt about

Immigrants ,

It was & is about Racism & a little about

Immigrants perspectives on Racism

Its as if you think people cant come to there own conclusion

By reading all points made & you decided to focus on

One persons point of view above others .

I wonder why that might be ?

Yes I picked out one person who I thought spoke sense, told us he was an immigrant and I could see he was a person of colour.

Someone who I felt was more suited to comment and I agreed with his comments.

Did I ignore Rogue? Pretty sure I replied to him above

I apologise if I'm not falling into line and only commenting where you allow but that's me, you'll never change me

But you ignored Fabio is also an Immigrant

(An Economic immigrant maybe or not)

Because you said he ranted on about the past .

Stuff from the past like Windrush ?

Where People were asked to come here & then 50 years later

Them & some of there kids were sent away from there

families here in the uk .

You really are digging yourself into a hole

Best you stop now ."

I said Fabio started well and then went on a rant.

Digging myself a hole and should stop? That's the second time in this thread you have tried to tell me what to do. I've already told you that won't help you

When is bangbang due back? He would love this thread

"

I agree. Just because I didn't experience racism, it doesn't mean racism doesn't exist. I have seen once and heard a couple of stories about racist abuse. Anti-racism movement definitely has a place here. My problems with the movement are:

1) Making things look worse than they actually appear. Exaggeration of everything as a matter of racism only results in people seeing the movement as a joke. I have worked in software companies with majority Asian people here, medical staff in NHS have disproportionately higher percentage of Asian population. Premier League football teams have disproportionately higher percentage of Black players. We have a right wing government with BAME people as Home Minister and finance minister. But for some reason, institutional racism seems to be a really big problem that everyone has to look at and solve immediately. There could still be institutional racism in some places. But western countries have made a tremendous progress in this matter in just the last two decades. We can trust the education system to solve the problem, rather than shoving it down people's throat. Don't even get me started on the tweets that the likes of Diane Abbott and Naz Shah post to inflame racial divisions.

2) The way the movement tries to go about solving the problem. Breaking statues, knee-jerk reactions for something that happens far away in the US, decisions like taking the knee being team decisions rather than individual decisions etc. are not going to solve the problems. They are seriously counter-productive. Even people who had sympathy for the movement would move away from it. Also, some people do not give a damn about political or social issues. They live in a bubble. They should just be left alone. "If you are silent, you are siding with the oppressor" is a slogan that is illogical and also lacks empathy.

3) Racism being shown as a white only problem. Racists and bigots come in all colours, shapes, sizes and gender. If the movement is targetted only at white people, I would say the movement itself is racist.

What the movement could focus on? Education system. I am with you on the fact that the empire was bad. People should know the atrocities committed by the empire. But no one needs to apologise for that. I am not going to apologise for a mistake that my grandfather did. No one should. We just need acknowledgement.

Encourage BAME children to focus on education and have big goals/ambitions right from the childhood. They need more qualified mentors who could show the right path ahead to have a good career, achieving their dreams and live a fulfilling life.

There are so many things one could do without positive discrimination, without troubling the majority and without using guilt as a weapon. But people in the movement are focussed on gaining attention rather than using sane solutions to fix the problems.

I am guessing that a lot of people here in this thread will be 2nd generation, so we would have seen the struggles that our parents went through and the stories they have told us… I don’t think the views of a 1st gen are any more or less important or impactful than them…

If fact I probably learnt as much from my grandmother (I say my did lived thru civil rights and my Nan lived thru little rights) .. it’s important to be able to see other perspectives

But people in the movement are focussed on gaining attention rather than using sane solutions to fix the problems."

What do you think of the racism against Marcus Rashford

Against Rio Ferdinand recently , or the abuse received by Marvin Bartley which is all on video at a football match he played in ?

A town near you

What makes people racist in the first place?

I lived in the UK for several years in a very multi cultural inner-city suburb.

Most people got on well but most of my Asian neighbours and local Asian shop keepers were very racist about black and anglo african people to the point that they would advise me to avoid them as they were trouble causers and dossers who just deal drugs and steal and mug people etc etc!

However I got to know quite a few black people especially drinking In local pubs, the black people I got to know would say how great this area used to be before all the Asians started moving in and they would also give out about the numbers of eastern euros moving in willing to work for peanuts etc.

My conclusion was Irish and Asians get on, Irish and black folk get on but every one else hates each other

Actually in the beginning a lot of nurses came here not knowing what parts of the country they would end it in.. that is why you ended up with black enclaves in cities you would not have thought would…

Best you stop now .

I said Fabio started well and then went on a rant.

Digging myself a hole and should stop? That's the second time in this thread you have tried to tell me what to do. I've already told you that won't help you

When is bangbang due back? He would love this thread

Im not telling you do anything

Im suggesting for your own reputation

It might be best to stop .

bangbang can do what he likes .

He is no concern of mine .

I think you might be better to stop

The Empire Windrush was calling in to the Caribbean on its way back to Britain from South America

The operators of the ship saw an opportunity to sell tickets as it was half empty. The idea that the government invited West Indians to come to Britain is a complete myth

Erm…. You might want to stop that rabbit hole… employer’s activity did recruit people in the carribean to come to the uk, they were given special stipends to help with accommodating and settling

The problem wasn’t the recruiting.. the issue ended up being that most decided to stay rather than going back when they thought they would not be needed

I won't be stopping any rabbit hole thanks. The government did not ask them to come, that's just a fact

The issue they had was with accommodation and lots were temporarily housed in a hanger - in Clapham I believe

Actually they were recruited by the big nationalised entities such as the then newly formed NHS… and especially companies within the expanding post war bus and railway industries…

Actually in the beginning a lot of nurses came here not knowing what parts of the country they would end it in.. that is why you ended up with black enclaves in cities you would not have thought would…

Like I said… the problem wasn’t that they came, the issue was they stayed!

If you are going to quote history then you better know your history…"

It seems that you're not disagreeing with any points I made and I'm not disagreeing with your points

And I'm well aware of historical facts. I think you might need some educating however

fenland

I grew up in south london.

My school was 3 miles from Brixton and I was there from the mid 60s

Being white I was subjected to racism and bullying on a daily business.

Culminated in my being ( cannot use the word ) in the playground as everyone else looked away.

I came too in the school nurses room

I never went back and the school couldn't care less

A town near you

People have these bland conversations about racism and if it exists or not.

Racism does exist but no one talks about the root causes.

Obviously it's illogical to dislike someone because they have different colour skin but none the less racism exists.

I don't consider my self racist but some people would think me racist or xenophobic for the simple reason that I think our housing market and health system (Ireland) amonst other services are under immense pressure due to immigration. (Ireland has 12.5% of population born outside Ireland)

We have a small economy and don't have much to offer other than security and safety.

I think the racism issue has been hijacked by militant organisations and some individuals for their own interests wether it be for or against.

Racism will always exist, you can't epect to change someones view of another by clicking your fingers.

Some might convert either way through some experiences in life, but very few.

In the animal world there is speciesism and terortoryism why wouldn't it not be the same in the human world.

I think we tend to expect too much of our fellow human beings. Human nature prevails
