I don’t think so, although that is more likely to happen

My hometown is levelling down if anything. All the big businesses with the exception of retail have gone. Less and less jobs that require an advanced education. Levelling up only applies to London it seems.

No.

And it seems that Johnson didn't have much of a clue what it might be all about, apart from adding 10 years to life expectancy if you live in Blackpool or Glasgow. Nobody's going downwards, just up - so, as there was no detail provided, I'm guessing that house affordability will be similar in Mayfair, Surrey and the poorest parts of the UK. It was suggested that they could undo the cuts of the last decade that have disproportionately affected the poorer but learning from experience never seems very popular.

Vague waffle is usually popular though, however many years that can be dragged on for.

"Has anyone noticed any of this levelling up yet in your respective constituencies?

Not yet - but levelling up is probably not going to be available in non-Tory parts of Scotland.

One thing I would really like to know is why the people of the Tory heartlands in SE England think that spending money on the rest of the country, to create infrastructure, to diminish homelessness, to lower child poverty, is going to make them poorer?

All that stuff is very non-Tory/socialist in nature, of course; but how in the name of fuck is it going to make anyone who owns a home (on average) worth over £500,000, poor? Assuming they only own one home, of course.

The Tory heartlands have had their turn - giving the rest of the country some respect and making an effort to improve the lives of those who live there won't inconvenience them - because it just can't.

It's a standard Tory response.

Has anyone actually asked how he intends to level up the north, whilst maintaining investment in the south, and getting over the double whammy of covid and Brexit?

Or is that a silly question?

That 31,000 won’t do much if they can’t do anything about the number of nurses leaving the profession. 75% (160,000) of the nurses who have left since 2010 have done so for reasons other than retirement.

Funnily enough since the government stopped giving the NHS the money it needs it has become a shit place to work.

People believe what fits their narrative, it’s extraordinary what mental gymnastics people will do because they refuse to accept they have been fooled.

These people are out very own QAnon types.

They’d rather make themselves look like complete idiots than admit they fell for a pretty obvious lie. You only have to look on these forums to see people desperate to cling on to anything they think justifies their actions, people are still saying Sweden did a good job with Covid ffs!

It’s something that could have happened had we stayed in the EU. Sunderland is Nissan’s most efficient factory outside of the Far East, it always has a very good chance of getting new business.

The top brass at Nissan are no fools though, decisions are made logically and without sentiment. If Nissan have chosen to keep the plant open in Sunderland it is because it s financially more viable than moving the work to an EU country, the only way it can be financially viable is if the batteries are produced in the UK. The only way it is financially viable to produce the batteries in the UK is if the government have a) made it so via investment/tax breaks, or b) guaranteed there will be a deal with the EU that will not hurt the financial viability of the business.

Or maybe c) a combination of the two.

The new uni?

The money going into the hospital?

Maybe the £72m for housing?that’s the last thing they want to know about negatives only please it gets them off lol

?you are from Liverpool Lionel are you telling us there’s been no investment or jobs created ?nothing in the pipeline must be one positive in that great city ?

The eu pumped millions into the city after your idols left it to die.

Unsurprisingly new labour also gave it a load of new jobs.

Us and Manchester didnt vote in that clown ,so in not holding my breath.

The Government awarded a total of £313m over three Growth Deals to the Liverpool City Region between 2015 and 2021 for capital projects that will benefit the local area and economy.  The funding is awarded to the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership and then invested through the Combined Authority’s Strategic Investment Fund.

This is for Liverpool Lionel must of missed that bit on his google lol and I don’t think he knows that the money the eu pumped in was part of what the U.K. paid into the eu "

I'd maybe do some reading on the tories and liverpool before chatting nonsense

I'm fairly sure what I said about hartlepool was in response to the people who claimed the police stations and hospitals were closed due to local gmnt.

Or was I incorrect in saying that?

Tbf to Johnson...he is a man of his word, so I think you would have to be a total cynic, to not believe every word out his mouth isnt gospel

I mean just look at his pledges around hospitals, police and nurses.

Straight as a dye he is.

"So one place where it is happening. Any others, or is that it?

I think I'd wait until those 20,000 jobs actually materialize 1st tbh.

Remember the bollocks about the nurses and police?

You mean the extra 20,000 police officers (to replace the 22,000 reduction since the Tories took over)?

Yep and the 50 000 new nurses,which turned out to.be 31,000.

Still I'm sure I'm sure they will come good kn this.

That 31,000 won’t do much if they can’t do anything about the number of nurses leaving the profession. 75% (160,000) of the nurses who have left since 2010 have done so for reasons other than retirement.

Funnily enough since the government stopped giving the NHS the money it needs it has become a shit place to work."

I was there when thatchers government introduced extra layers of management. We didnt known what they did and their job titles were cobblers. Management had plush custom made carpet in the offices, while there was a shortage of blankets for the wards.

Government goes on about x billions spent on the nhs, without a real account of where the money went, ie extra managers, contractors etc... The 1st thing contractors do is see the nhs as a cash cow to milk, fucking annoys me to this day

Claims and counter claims regarding levelling up at the moment,

Question is this, could it be claimed that after years of underfunding the levelling up agenda is just a show piece policy, but it doesnt rectify years of under investment?

Whats the thought?

It’s just a return to the bygone age of Conservatism, when the wealthy landowners treated the peasants like shit but every now and again threw them some scraps and the peasants appreciated it because they knew their place.

Working class Conservative voters these days are exactly the same, they know their place and if they do as they are told their betters will allow them the privilege of eating their scraps.

It’s tragic, and the worst thing is they will completely deny it because that’s what their betters have taught them to do.

Anyone would think we are still in the 17th century.

"I live in Bassetlaw that had the biggest red to blue swing in the country.

Prime candidate for levelling up you would think. Err no only growth industry to be see in last 18 months is we now have 3 local drug dealers!

What about the £900m bassetlaw have a share of?

The new uni?

The money going into the hospital?

Maybe the £72m for housing?

So this is it the magic sauce the ketchup of catch up.

Patch up the infrastructure wrecked by years of tory austerity. There's me thinking we are going to get same life chances as the South East.

You said there has been nothing in the last 18 months. I'm just providing some facts. If you want more, petition your local MP

No new university simple as 3.5 million to tart up old skill center.

15 million to hospital when announced that was to prevent catastrophic failures and risks to safety but was reported as for the hospital group not just worksop.

I'm genuinely interested in the 72 million for Bassetlaw housing link please.

Ckearly some one who lives anywhere near the area, is more well informed than you.

They are all experts on liverpool too apparently.

Its how they roll

a bit like you with Hartlepool Lionel you had lots to say about them and not nice things either but that’s just who you are

I'm fairly sure what I said about hartlepool was in response to the people who claimed the police stations and hospitals were closed due to local gmnt.

Or was I incorrect in saying that?

Let's see you can answer that shall we?"

it was in response to Hartlepool voting Tory Lionel you went into melt down

‘Levelling up’ is a meaningless political slogan, what is the bench mark level that is required? Does this apply to everyone or just certain areas? It is nonsense

Made doubly ironic as it's been caused by years of cuts in the 1st place

Someone said to me, levelling up could also mean:

Levelling up inequality

Levelling up poverty

Levelling up corruption

Would that be a fair thought?

The government have certainly made great strides in those areas.

"Lots of houses being built if that counts

Good news if true. Built by whom? Where? How many?"

Well obviously in my area otherwise I wouldnt of said.

Theres like 3 large housing developments being made around Bedford. Also a new train line possibly from Bedford to Cambridge with new stations.

Some will be social housing afaik the law is that a certain percentage of them have to be if I'm not mistaken.

I am not going to dispute this, mainly because there has been a massive effort of housebuilding, due to relaxation of planning laws. Making it easier for builders to use greenbelt land and fast tracking applications.

Some have to be social housing, true.

"I should imagine they will level up the north like all goverments have for the last 50 years"

Lost cause. They could spend billions and i doubt much will change.

Building a bigger bowl and outlet pipe does not make a toilet smell sweeter.

Bexley

to my astonishment I find that this is an old thread and didn't just start today.

As soon a I heard that Boris had made use of the phrase in his keynote speech today, I thought 'This is going to be bad news for most of us'. political buzz phrases are normally best treated with the utmost suspicion.

There is still not enough local government social house being built just mostly private homes

They should be building 100% council houses because that’s what the country needs right now!

What the country needs and what it wants are two totally separate things.

It may need 100% council housing, what it gets is more houses in the north and less in the south.

Even with northern tories, the southern tories come as priority.
