Brexit: What is the northern ireland protocol?

From the land of haribos.

The EU will says it will outline new proposals for the northern ireland protocol, the arrangement which helps prevent checks along the border between Northern Ireland and the republic of ireland.

Since coming into force at the start of 2021, the protocol has prompted disagreements between the uk and eu, including a row over transporting sausages and other chilled meats.

How will they solve it and how does the checks work?

The issue as of now is that the protocol is working “too well” for the EU in as much as trade between Eire and N Ireland has massively increased whereas trade between Great Britain and N Ireland is collapsing.

Unless this changes, the Unionists in N Ireland and the British Government fear that political, emotional and physical link between Britain and N Ireland will be replaced by stronger links with Eire and speed up the process of unification.

This was warned about as nauseum by the majority of journalists, commentators and virtually everyone with some common sense - but Johnson and his cronies decried it all as nonsense.

I cant reunification happening any time soon, the majority of people in the north dont currently want this and neither does a large proportion of the south from the last time a poll was carried out. Equally if those in the north are happy heading towards reunification why are they so bitterly opposed to the protocol and having to play by EU rules?, doesnt make sense to me.

It is only small, but noisy Unionist groups who are against it.

The protocol is working.

You can almost guarantee that the proposals will be tilted to the EU side so can’t see any agreement soon

Which, reunification or the protocol?. If you mean the protocol then yes I would agree its the unionists who are unhappy, but then the protocol only affects them really, but if you mean its only the unionists against reunification then I would disagree, the most recent border polls on the island do not show a majority for reunification at all.

Newcastle and Gateshead

The protocol as written is working fine… this boris led government wrote it!!! Remember the Teresa may withdrawal agreement, which would have worked around the current problem, was voted down 3 times by its own Conservative party

the problem is that the uk government and the hardline brexiteers were always told that if you were not to put a border down across Ireland then it would have to go down the Irish Sea!

Those brexiteers were trying to sell everyone snake oil by pretending that was not the case to everyone on the mainland…. Where every single political party representing Northern Ireland including the DUP said that was not the case!

So the boris government are trying to renege on not only something they signed, they wrote the bloody thing!

The DUP would find a way of saying NO to anything... they’d probably even find a way of saying NO to something the fundamentally agree with or even want... the word YES does not exist in their vocabulary.

Well over a hundred years ago they actually said NO to something that didn’t even exist, and then they created their own army to fight against this non existent foe.... this causing the people they thought they may be fighting against to actually form their own army (just for the he’ll of it). Without even realizing what they did, they inadvertently created what became the IRA... they are so bigoted and blind with hatred they simply cannot see the benefit or good in anything.

Do we in the South want them..... hell no,... but we’ll gladly take their money. We’re not completely stupid. The protocol works fine...
