Has quietly made protest illegal
If you look in the opinion of a PC
It can be initiated “whether or not the constable has any grounds for suspecting that the person… is carrying a prohibited object”.
Anyone found guilty of obstructing a stop and search during a protest faces a jail term “not exceeding 51 weeks”. In other words, they risk imprisonment for nearly a year.
Amendment 319D criminalises the obstruction of “major transport works”, including roads, rail lines or airport runways. Amendment 319A creates an offence of “locking on”, or carrying equipment which might facilitate it. Got a tube of super glue, or a bike lock, even though you are on a bike? You break the law.
Just think about that, and think about the Suffareget movement.
An SDPO ( serious disruption prevention order ) is basically a protest Asbo. It can be imposed on anyone convicted of a “protest-related offence”. This category alone is extremely broad. It potentially applies, under the provisions of the bill itself, to the examples above – possessing superglue near a demonstration, or holding hands during a protest.
Shout "BoZo out" get nicked and you can then get arrested for holding hands with your partner.
Amendment 342M.2.iii allows it to be imposed on people whose activities “were likely to result in serious disruption”. In other words, you do not even have to have been convicted of a crime. You do not even need to have caused disruption. It’s enough that you might have.
They can be blocked from using the internet to “encourage” people to “carry out activities related to a protest”. Someone who used their social media account to promote a demonstration could be found in breach of the order.
Before the "it's only the lefties who need to worry" just think of what this would have done to brexit protests, fuel protests those marching to support the NHS?

I've not had time to delve deep into it, just seeing the headlin news on it.
The left are against it, the right, all for it. As usual with these things, the best solution is probably in the middle.
The Lords will push for amendments, and a watered down bill may well come back to the HoC.
If BJ's and PP's standings keep falling, some back bench Conservative MPs may well go against it. |

I suspect "the right" are for it because everything is going their way at the moment.
In the future, there maybe a swing to the left, and they would have a different perspective if they're not able to protest against what they see as wrong. |

Bottom line is to ask whether living in a democracy we citizens should have a right to protest without fear of reproach or an over zealous interpretation of the law by the police.
Of course there are bad apples. Of course there are anarchists or agent provocateurs who will hijack peaceful protest. But laws that can easily be misapplied and therefore remove our hard won rights should be viewed with the utmost suspicion! |

If you assault a PC then you are in trouble.
The proposed law means if a PC doesn't like the look of you he or she can arrest you.
