'Private e-scooters will be legalised for use on British roads under new laws to be unveiled next month. Grant Shapps says laws concerning e-scooters will be announced on 10 May.'

So. Love them or hate, they do have the potential to take thousands and thousands of cars off the roads, particularly for journeys of 40 kilometres (return) or less. There is believed to be about 750,000 private e-scooters in use across the UK.

(Declaring that we love them here, as we have had 2 already for more than 4 years.)

Properly managed and with proper application of rules and laws this has to be part of the future right?

Yes. We know there are idiots out there - just as there are on push-bikes, motorbikes, e-bikes, cars and trucks.

So are you with the programme or agin' it lol?

Downsides:

Garages will suffer loss of trade for sale and repairs of cars.

Supply chain ditto.

Road Fund Licence receipts may dip seriously.

?

Upsides:

Greener. Much greener.

Convenient.

They have e-scooters you can hire in Bristol via an app.

They claim to have reduced the number of people taking short trips in the city by car or taxi.

People get annoyed with the way they're parked and that some people ride them dangerously.

If they are to have a positive impact on co2 emissions, then the electricity generation to charge them needs to come from renewable sources.

Ours are charged by solar.

They also have them in Lyon (centre) and, like Bristol, you hire them using an app.

Properly managed they must surely be good overall.

I'm can't find if that's the case here or not.

I suspect that they will make up one part of the solution.

Neither.

No objection to it if they keep off the pavements and have to abode by road rules and contribute to the infrastructure upkeep.

Not interested in one ourselves. Will stick to cars. If need short transport would rather cycle or walk.

You forgot -

Downsides:

A significant increase in road deaths due to dangerous scootering / inattentive car drivers.

Upsides:

Town centres will be quieter.

Car parking spaces will be easier to find.

The downside in scooter road deaths total may well be offset by the reduction in road deaths between cars, cars and pedestrians etc. etc.

Caveat emptor. Don’t havr an issue with that. Riding them won’t be mandatory. Same as with motorbikes. If you want to take your chances and hop on then that’s a choice. They won’t be any more dangerous on the roads than mopeds.

30 miles on an e-scooter compared to a petrol car, there's no comparison.

They are great, it's the tossers who don't respect other road users and pedestrians that's the problem.

Keep deaths of the roads, make them ride on the pavements.
