The privatisation of transport and energy has failed the ordinary people of this country.

Has any political Party got the balls to recognise this and act to protect the citizens of this country from excessive profiteering?

Profiteering is deliberately doing something to increase profits. The energy generators didn't invade Ukraine, and aren't responsible for the rise in gas prices. Yes, they're making massive profits, but by accident, not by design. It's not profiteering, it's a windfall.

Not sure what the privatisation of transport has got to do with it though.

Wholesale gas prices in the U.K. are low at the moment, but energy companies are charging spot rates for European delivery. That is plain wrong. Energy acquisition, distribution and sales of essential energy should be owned by the people so that the Government can protect people from shocks like we are experiencing at the moment. Standing charges for gas and electric are criminal theft - why pay for something if you don’t use it? It’s a scam and it needs sorting.

As for transport, we have the most complicated and the most expensive rail ticketing costs in Europe. It should not cost more to travel around this country by train than it does by plane or even by car. But it does. This week my wife has trips to Ipswich and to Luton. £250 return each trip because the shorter legs to/from London are now identified as to whether they are peak or off peak. Before April it was only the long London leg that was classified. It’s all just a rip off and I feel really sorry for people who are foreign visitors or elderly people who can’t differentiate between the multitude of different ticket types and costs.

"Wholesale gas prices in the U.K. are low at the moment, but energy companies are charging spot rates for European delivery."

Can you post any evidence of that?

"Standing charges for gas and electric are criminal theft - why pay for something if you don’t use it?"

But you do use it. The standing charge is meant to be covering the maintenance of the system. All the replacement of worn out pipes and cables and whatever. I'll agree with you that the suppliers have recently raised their standing charges unreasonably, but the existence of a standing charge is fine, they existed long before privatisation.

"As for transport, we have the most complicated and the most expensive rail ticketing costs in Europe..."

No argument there, the rail system in this country is ridiculous, and badly needs reforming.

Google the spot price of gas (catalyst commercial). it was as hight as 520 in March, now below 100. Granted, this is day ahead and not year ahead - but still?....

As for paying for infrastructure maintenance - that should be built in to the pricing like with everything else.

I agree that wholesale prices have come down since 2 months ago, it was the "energy companies are charging spot rates for European delivery" bit that I was hoping for a link to.

Not according to OFCOM, around 2/3rds the February rate, but still twice the price it was in December.

It's currently lower, but now low.

The prices are only going up if the RMT get their way, looks like a strike on jubilee weekend is on the cards.

Middle of June earliest for any strike action.
