Feels like Brexit has been tearing this country apart since Cameron. It also feels like Brexit is continuing to tear apart the Tory party & Labour. How will it all end?

Not convinced it will end anytime soon. Maybe instead of constantly arguing they should get on with things though not going to hold my breath. Possibly one or both parties will split up.

It'll continue in some way for years, perhaps in time pragmatism will trump the ideological self harm that Brexit is and the absolute best deal can be reached for the country and not what we have now..

Oven ready my arse..

The Conservative MP’s have to support their own ideological project whilst many of the now ostracised traditional Tories speak their mind - but in a political vacuum.

Labour have recognised the divisions in society that Brexit has caused and so cannot be seen to be pursuing a policy that would prolong and exacerbate the agony by suggesting that we should redoing the EU.

It is a particularly unique situation where there literally is an elephant in the room but no-one can admit to seeing it.

The answer can only be a new Government that quietly gets rid of some of the stupid excesses of Brexit and works towards normalising U.K./EU relationships whilst life generally just moves along. Labour cannot and should not adopt a policy of reforming the EU as this will just prolong the nightmare that we are all going through.

The Brexiters need to be given time and space to celebrate their successes and the country can just move on without their destructive input.

We won’t

Perhaps as the EU itself changes, changes brought about by the unhappiness of a large proportion of the electorate of the remaining big nett contributors, then the vast majority of OUR electorate and the EU parliament would be trying to get us back in. The EU was and is far from perfect. Brexit might have given them the kick up the arse they needed to ask themselves some questions about what direction they were heading, does everyone want, and is it the only way?

I can see an EU 2.0 happening eventually.

The only way I see the Tories no longer being torn apart by Brexit is if they become a pure pro Brexit/ hard right wing party. Feels like they're on their way to that. The problem is that will allienate a lot of voters.

The only way Labour stops being pulled apart might be if they become a pro rejoin party. But this will also alienate a lot of voters. Currently feels like they're trying to walk a tightrope, wobbling a bit from side to side. They can probably get away with it next election because the Tories are now hated for so many reasons. Beyond that, I'm not so sure.

How are we supposed to move on when people and politicians are still pretending it was a good idea.

What a ridiculous situation for a country to be stuck in.

Until we start working to mitigate against all the problems it's causing, we have no hope of moving forwards.

So what? It's still shit.

Imagine you're on the edge of a cliff. Some people tell you there's a huge drop to a painful death over the cliff. Other people tell you there's a drop onto a pile of money & tits that will cushion your fall & make you happy + rich.

You dunno what to do, but you like the sound of the money & tits option so you jump.

After jumping, you see there is indeed just a long drop to a painful death. But there's a rope you can grab to pull yourself up. Yet instead of grabbing the rope, you cross your arms & tell yourself you made your decision while you plummet to the ground.

The real reason why Brexit isnt going well as it potentionally could do, isnt because of Brexit itself per say. Its because there was no proper plan to execute Brexit and also the negotiations of Brexit were handled by people who lets be honest, never really believed in it. They only acted on their civil duty to carry out Brexit to respect the leave vote. This what happens when you don't have someone who does something through their heart, mess and chaos.

Nope.

Option A: rejoin the EU.

Option B: vote for a party that will hopefully at least work to ameliorate the damage of Brexit.

The pandemic didn't help. But Brexit was always gonna be shit.

Look up footage of Johnson & Gove after they won the Brexit vote. They had to give a victory speech. They looked miserable. Why would they look miserable right after winning?

(Because they knew Brexit was shit & they never wanted to win that vote.)

Rejoining the EU would be the worse thing that can happen. Because if the country did decide to rejoin, its almost certain The UK will not get the same arrangements they had before the country voted to leave the EU and its also certain we would have to join the EU and Shengen which Im sure most people dont want. So the sure thing to do really is make best out of a complex situation

We're a million light years away from making the best of this shit situation.

Politicians are afraid they will lose votes if they are honest about brexit. So they have to pretend it was a good idea. It's really a crazy place we find ourselves in.

Only one flaw in this.

There was never a plan that was going to be positive as every outcome forecast was negative.

There is no “good” Brexit hard or soft they all are negative to the U.K. economy. Perhaps one or another could be described as less shit!

The rest is just fantasy sovereignty and a sound bite of taking back control. Of what exactly? What didn’t we control before ?

All the business rules still have to be followed if we trade with Europe we just don’t set those rules anymore.

The only rules looking to change are workers rights and pulling out of the ECHR .

Our border issues would reduce dramatically if we had safe options for wannabe immigrants .

That’s how dysfunctional we are. We need workers and we make it hard for potential workers to come here! Which in turns costs us billions. It’s a joke of a government. They are highlighting their failures on immigration systems to energise the right wing mob. I can be fixed they just chose not to.

It’s also a nonsense to say in 20-30 years it will work out . That’s just wishful thinking to make people look away from reality.

Our MPs just lie with impunity.

How can you say that the people who fought for Brexit and who subsequently negotiated it and who won an election on the back of it “did not have their heart in it”?

David (Lord) Frost was the chief negotiator FFS and he was rewarded with the knighted for his exceptional devotion to the negotiation.

Sorry - but this is BS.

Brexit is shit because it defies common sense and logic for a misguided ideological belief that Britain is “better” than its closest European trading partners. No amount of deflecting cause or blame can change the fact that Brexit was (and is) just a stupid idea.

How would you propose moving on?

There are only one of two ways:

1) Accept that Brexit is coming at a cost so great that it is damaging the fabric of the nation and taking steps to mitigate those costs for the greater good of the nation.

OR

2) Continue to deny that Brexit has any cost or consequences and march on the current trajectory in the hope that at some point in the future external third-party, world events provide us with with random and ad-hoc wins.

The current Government cannot accept option 1 despite the overwhelming evidence that it faces and so for now we all have to carry on regardless and pretend that all is well despite knowing absolutely that it isn’t.

"We" didn't necessarily. But there was a referendum in 1975, then again in 2016. So some people presumably voted twice.

Hi! It's nice to be polite. We could all learn something from that.

The GE wasn't a referendum, there were lots of issues going on, not just Brexit. Plus other parties were committed to Brexit, some of whom wanted a less damaging version.

I suppose you could say it was an indicator that lots of people didn't understand the complexities of leaving the EU, and wanted an extremely simple solution to an extremely complex problem with "get brexit done".

"Honestly, we haven't seen Brexit cited much aside from left leaning new sources.

So you don't think Brexit is tearing the Tories & Labour apart & has been doing so for years?

Do you?"

Um... yes.

Cameron called the Brexit vote to try & appease the right in his own party & see off the threat from UKIP. All that happened was Brexit divided the whole bloody country & his own party.

The Tory party is still tearing itself apart between the far right who want the hardest & most uncompromising relationship with Europe possible & those who want some sort of solution.

The Labour party is tearing itself apart as they try to walk a tightrope pretending Brexit isn't fucking everything up while knowing it's the thing fucking everything up. Some want to rejoin. Some want to kowtow to those who voted for Brexit for fear of pissing them off.

But Brexit isn't 'fucking everything up' - you know fine well the pandemic did a good job in that direction, with Ukraine exacerbating things further. These are exogenous events all European states are encountering.

Here, we have full employment, record low unemployment, falling inflation, free healthcare and people desperate to get here on small boats rather than stay in war torn France.

I don't know anyone it's 'tearing apart' apart from a few mouthy lefties on here.

Most people I know are just getting on with their lives. Times are harder, but they blame Putin for that. Thankfully the war in Ukraine will end before any vote to get back in the EU. Covid is continuously abating. Better times will return if voters can just keep Labour out.

I know a bloke whose life choices mean things are 'fucked up' and he wonders why he's in a damp flat with little money, pouring all his bile on the Government to whoever will listen. He never listened at school, got into drugs, impregnated 3 different women, hardly ever works and guess what, after 2020 it's all been the fault of Brexit. Yes, righto

Because he lives in this country as far as I know. And the Tories have been fucking this country over for many years.

There's always the possibility he's a Tory donor, I guess. In that case, he might have made a fortune out of dodgy Covid contracts. In such a case, I guess you could say he's done v well out of the Tories.

That's my point Brexit had 0 chance with the pandemic. Yet if the government didn't shut everything down no.mattervtbe costs financially in a extremely socialist society there would be hell to pay. It's justy option on the outcome.

And yet, strangely according to the BBC:

Most nations saw international trade collapse at the height of pandemic. Since then, the rest of the G7 countries have seen trade, when compared to the size of their economies, bounce back in a way that hasn't happened in the UK.
