What are we to make of the Belgium Police disrupting this conference and upsetting that nice Mr Farage? Were they appeasing the socialist mayor of Brussels or doing the EU's dirty work?

A very disturbing turn of events that illustrates a growing trend of left wing censorship and dictatorship by cancelling or simply stopping free speech that they do not agree with.

Who are we to tell the mayor of Brussels (or an area of) what to do?

Wasn’t he just taking back control?

What does one of the scheduled speakers, Suella Braverman, think about stopping people from peacefully expressing their political views?

Taking back control of what? The conference were not inciting disorder, just a talking-shop of like minded conservatives. It's Putin-esque censorship at the heart of the EU.

Surely that’s for the people of Brussels to decide? We could ask Viktor Orban, another of the speakers, how he deals with people expressing anti-government political views in Hungary?

So did the people of Brussels decide? A vote maybe? No, this was Socialist censorship in a city housing the parliament presiding over 500 mil. people.

They voted for their elected representatives and they decided on their behalf. That’s how a representative democracy works.

Given how Farage, Braverman and Orban feel about people gathering together to express their political views, I would’ve thought they would be applauding the mayor.

Or is there some sort of double standard at play here?

The Prime Minister of Belgium has stated the following, which I believe answers your question.

“ What happened at the Claridge today is unacceptable. Municipal autonomy is a cornerstone of our democracy but can never overrule the Belgian constitution guaranteeing the freedom of speech and peaceful assembly since 1830. Banning political meetings is unconstitutional.Full stop”

this is what I read to and also that the ban has been overturned so the conference can proceed. All they have done is provide more ammunition to those at the conference to show that others are no longer confident of winning against these people or groups that they have to resort to banning them. Massive own goal.

Does it mean that we shouldn't even call it out? Why do we even discuss world politics then?

Rule number 1 of politics - Politicians are power hungry scumbags. If you give them an opportunity to become authoritarian they will take it with a big smile. Applies for both left and right wing politicians.

This is why people should never support laws which go against free speech. European politicians have been slowly chipping away on people's right to free speech for years now. Now they feel emboldened to do stuff like this. Who would have guessed?
