Leaving aside the tariffs, how much will observing such a boycott - and a reduction in tourism to the USA - really affect their economy?

I think they'll notice it but it won't bother them much.

But that's also like. Don't fly on a USA made plane, don't buy fule, cereal or bred as it might be from USA very hard to do.

It's surprisingly easy to avoid flying in an American-made plane. Airbus and Bombardier are doing very well these days, while Boeing are rapidly losing ground.

People would get pretty bored watching East European sitcoms or Algerian romcoms on TV. Listening to "world" music is not for the faint hearted and there is only so many Bollywood block busters you can watch before going on suicide watch.

It's public knowledge which companies own which planes. If someone cared about these things, they could just look it up in advance, and book with the right company.

I think we’ll miss them before they miss us! Who uses an apple phone, uses google, uses Facebook, uses Microsoft software. We rely very heavily on the US & have sheltered under their defensive umbrella for far too long. It’s about time we; UK, western economies, Canada etc put our hands deeper into our pockets to pay for our own protection instead of expecting the US to fund & subsidise us. Good on you DT, too many have ridden on the back of your tax payers.

As a large portion of products come from Gchina and flying is a rare occurrence.

There's nothing original coming from America entertainment wise, Kanye is a total fruit loop. Most people can watch old repeats anywhere.

My burgers are Aberdeen Angus the buns are Tesco my cider is Thatchers.

No way will I buy the new Capri, vintage Capri fan here. My Elvis collection is complete.

It’s actually working in Canada already to the point that American politicians are already going on tv there trying to separate themselves from Trump

See… I think the Canada and the EU are missing a trick… imagine if they agreed to a one year joint “Schengen area” (they could call it a trial for the purpose of this) could you imagine how much tourism would be generated

If you buy anything you are probably paying fees indirectly to Visa, Mastercard and Amex through the payment system. Or to Google Pay/Apple Pay, also American.

If you want to stop buying American you’ll just have to stop existing.

I’m not convinced a few leftie bores in the UK not buying a new iPhone is going to make much difference to the US economy which continues to way outstrip UK and EU economic performance.

There is a big world out there. The world doesn’t end at the Islington border. The UK is just increasingly irrelevant and out of touch.

Yes good idea let’s rejoin the EU and take advantage of their economic, political and cultural success. Things are booming over there.

The only way forward is to relive the past.

Okay… let’s me give you an example… bourbon… made in Kentucky

The biggest export market for bourbon is Canada… accounts for about 20% of world wide exports

Last week a campaign started suggesting people switch from bourbon to Canadian Rye Whiskey, that and the site of American alcoholic products pulled from shelves was enough to get republicans senators to beg not to go through with tariffs….

Tariffs goes both ways… regardless of what trump tries to tell you

There are already tariffs in place for thousands of products…. I wish you could see the WTO tariffs guidelines because it’s a hefty old book with thousands of pages

So let’s take a product we actually know very well that is very common… the good old motor car

It’s rare that you see a us built car in the UK or the EU because there is a 40% tariff on it… there is a reason you don’t see cheap European built cars in the USA, because the US slap a 40% tariff on it! The reason you do see luxury European cars on American roads is the theory that if you are prepared to spend a couple hundred thousand dollars on a car then no tariff (even though it’s still 40%) is going to deter you!

"It’s actually working in Canada already to the point that American politicians are already going on tv there trying to separate themselves from Trump"

I think Canada will be the one place where many US citizens - even some of his supporters - will really come to regret Trump's actions. He's destroyed a lot of friendship and goodwill. Most Canadians are likely to remain unwilling to buy American, where it's avoidable, until he's out of office.

Import duty is high from America anyway - but there is nothing in America that I can’t get elsewhere anyway. I think this whole thing is stupid.

Getting rid of essential government departments is lunacy.

I have no desire to visit there anymore. I used to occasionally go but no way now.

I don’t think they are getting rid of “essential government departments”. They are getting rid of waste, of which there seems to be an awful lot.

I’ve no doubt we would find exactly the same here if anyone could be bothered to undertake the exercise. Obviously there is no incentive for the government to check its own waste.

As for the US I visit often and can’t wait to get back. It has a real buzz to it now and things are happening.

Compare that to dreary Britain where everything has come to a halt and nothing is happening. Sadly feels like Yesterday’s Country (alongside the rest of Europe).

You mean.. when it’s 55bn dollars not in fact 55bn dollars… when it’s announced by DOGE…

Let’s me give you 2 examples within the 55bn

For example, they claim to have seen 140-150 years olds on the files where social security are paid … that’s not true and been debunked! What has happened is that death certificates for some people were never received, but they are claiming these people were paid when they are not

They cited a contract for 8 billion dollars they had cancelled.. brilliant… but the 8 billion contract was actually a typo, and was worth 8 million .. and the company had already done a lot of the work, so what they actually saved by cancelling the said contract was 2.5 million….

If you really want to see what is being gutted and then say you support it this should be interesting

The department dealing with research of dementia and Alzheimer’s

Or the department dealing with research in maternal care

The department dealing with veterans health care

Remember when they cut USAID and cited condoms going to Gaza, and them being used by Hamas to package bombs… one problem with that, the condoms were going to the Gaza area of Mozambique! They were part of a program to limit the spread of HIV

The great thing is that DOGE website claimed 55 billion in savings… listed “receipts “ for 16 billion.. and then people started being able to pick the claims apart.. such as the 8 billion/ 8 million typo… one 665 million dollar contract which was triplicated.. and even then was a open ended contract where the spending was 15 million a year

So the 55 billion claims.. they actually after scrutinisation actually accounted for about 2 billion…… when musk said the original target was 2 trillion

Walsall

Public sector borrowing £12 billion ahead of target in ten months to January.

Jobs being cut at fastest rate since 2008.

Impending tax rises or public sector cuts incoming.

Is the UK going to end up with its own Doge forced on it by Labour ineptitude?

"The ammount of money they are saving thanks to D.O.G.E and Trump.... i think they will be alright

Hopefully we will get something of the same in the UK and we can stop spending money to wars outside of the country

You mean.. when it’s 55bn dollars not in fact 55bn dollars… when it’s announced by DOGE…

Newcastle and Gateshead

Well here we go… and the funny thing trump likes to be loved by the Wall Street Journal… this morning they absolutely destroyed him

So we will waiting to see what the off ramp for Trump is… what minimal gain will he see to claim victory? Or see how long the Jedi mind trick of “it the other country that pays the tariffs not consumers “ holds…

And then at the end of next week we have the debt ceiling coming…. Best guess… proper government shutdown
