Human civilizations have always erected art or memorials or we'd have no Stonehenge, Pyramids, Eiffel Tower. But whether taxpayers get good value from public projects is another matter - just look at defence procurement ...or the NHS! |

Everybody tells me that the Royal Family brings in more tourist money than they cost the taxpayer (no studies have ever been made and no actual figures available, but that doesn't stop 'em).
So this latest vanity extravaganza will surely bring in millions... |

Everybody tells me that the Royal Family brings in more tourist money than they cost the taxpayer (no studies have ever been made and no actual figures available, but that doesn't stop 'em).
So this latest vanity extravaganza will surely bring in millions..."
The money will be spent on Lord Norman Foster's team, creating employment and likely more commissions for his practice. Also on materials and tradesmen re-modelling the park. Sculptors modelling the statues. Then we are left with a park and memorials that will be enjoyed probably for 100s of years. Don't see the problem. |

I think it's reasonable for the state to pay for an appropriate memorial for the late Queen. But it shouldn't cost more than a couple of million quid.
If members of the public want to make donations to expand the concept, for instance to include ideas like the bridge then fine.

i'd rather see that sort of money build a technical college, which would create design jobs for the architects resulting in more comissions for their practice, design jobs for the M&E side of the project, hundreds of trades jobs during the construction, wideranging and expansive material supply chains along with planeed maintenance programes going forward, highly skilled permenant jobs in teaching, estates and administration along with the training of thousands of people that are needed in a modern economy.
i think that would be far more beneficial to the country than yet another vanity project for london. |

Yes monuments are always going to be contentious when pitted against a reduction in a disabled persons allowance. A simple statue is all that is needed in a suitable location, oh and hopefully it will be a good likeness. By the way whats become of Princess Diana's water feature which was in a park ? |

I think allowing the public to make voluntary donations to add to whatever comes from the public purse is a good idea.
I imagine that the required funds would be raised by voluntary subscription within a week if that. |

is still there or was last summer took my grandson up there had the time of his life splashing about in it

I agree. However it's in the best interests of the monarchy and it's continuation if a 'grateful nation' pays tribute this way. It reinforces the (to me laughable) image of a family that have sacrificed everything for public duty.

. It seems you are out of touch with reality. A significant majority of the population have endless respect for the Royal Family. Look at the number of people who want to see them on any major visit. It is money well spent which illustrates how much respect the Royal Family command |
