New statue of Late Queen and Prince Philip
Jump to: Newest in thread
"A new statue of the late Queen and Prince Philip is to be erected in St. James's Park along with a bridge made of glass cost "up £46,000,000." Value for money?"
Is any art or aesthetic installation value for money? It depends on your perspective. |

Human civilizations have always erected art or memorials or we'd have no Stonehenge, Pyramids, Eiffel Tower. But whether taxpayers get good value from public projects is another matter - just look at defence procurement ...or the NHS! |

"Value for money?"
Absolutely!
Everybody tells me that the Royal Family brings in more tourist money than they cost the taxpayer (no studies have ever been made and no actual figures available, but that doesn't stop 'em).
So this latest vanity extravaganza will surely bring in millions... |

The money will be spent on Lord Norman Foster's team, creating employment and likely more commissions for his practice. Also on materials and tradesmen re-modelling the park. Sculptors modelling the statues. Then we are left with a park and memorials that will be enjoyed probably for 100s of years. Don't see the problem. |

I think it's reasonable for the state to pay for an appropriate memorial for the late Queen. But it shouldn't cost more than a couple of million quid.
If members of the public want to make donations to expand the concept, for instance to include ideas like the bridge then fine.

i'd rather see that sort of money build a technical college, which would create design jobs for the architects resulting in more comissions for their practice, design jobs for the M&E side of the project, hundreds of trades jobs during the construction, wideranging and expansive material supply chains along with planeed maintenance programes going forward, highly skilled permenant jobs in teaching, estates and administration along with the training of thousands of people that are needed in a modern economy.
i think that would be far more beneficial to the country than yet another vanity project for london. |

Charlie had a reported £6bn of jewels at his coronation, the state paid up the nonce brothers out of court settlement, and now £46million for a statue while Starmers squeezing disabled benefits |

Yes monuments are always going to be contentious when pitted against a reduction in a disabled persons allowance. A simple statue is all that is needed in a suitable location, oh and hopefully it will be a good likeness. By the way whats become of Princess Diana's water feature which was in a park ? |

I think allowing the public to make voluntary donations to add to whatever comes from the public purse is a good idea.
I imagine that the required funds would be raised by voluntary subscription within a week if that. |

A memorial to a Queen and her consort who dedicated their entire lives to selfless public service is hardly a vanity project for London. |

"People cant pay bills, put food on the table but we are going to spend all that money on something that wont even appeal to most of the country...how sad"
Yes, but at least we are not that bad compared to North Korea |

so london gets yet another monument that is in reality just another vanity project dreamt up by the vapidly obsequious in a vague attempt at pulling on the heart strings of rabid nationalism. |

Well London is the capital of our united kingdom of which the royals are constitutional heads. What's your alternative? A Trump, Putin, Xi, Jong-Un, Sturgeon? |

"The royal family can and should buy this, not the taxpayers "
I agree. However it's in the best interests of the monarchy and it's continuation if a 'grateful nation' pays tribute this way. It reinforces the (to me laughable) image of a family that have sacrificed everything for public duty.
They could sell a couple of paintings to finance the work and nobody would notice. |

stop acting like a ridiculous idiot by posting that sort of garbage when i have already outlined a far more important, realistic and beneficial alternative to the nonsense proposed for a vastly overinflated cost. |

" . It seems you are out of touch with reality. A significant majority of the population have endless respect for the Royal Family. Look at the number of people who want to see them on any major visit. It is money well spent which illustrates how much respect the Royal Family command |

"Look at the number of people who want to see them on any major visit. It is money well spent"
Without ACTUAL FIGURES, that tedious non sequitur could just as easily read "Look at the number of people who want to see them on any major visit. It is NOT money well spent"
Don't get me wrong, the whole in-bred lot of 'em costs me less than a pound a week, and to change our Constitution would end up costing me more than that.
But please, please, please don't lets try to fool ourselves that they bring in more to the country than they take... |

God knows why they have endless respect. I'm not a republican in any real sense but I simply don't understand how people can't see through the publicity campaign and propaganda surrounding the monarchy. |

" . I bet you would not dare call someone a ridiculous idiot in real life. The is the reserve of those who like to hide behind the anonymity of the keyboard. Only a coward would refer to comments as garbage. At least most people have enough common sense to realise that not everyone will agree with their opinion |
