The homelessness minister, Rushanara Ali, has resigned after reports emerged that she evicted tenants from her east London property before increasing the rent by almost £700 a month.

The absolute state of this country, it's a write off at this stage.

Problem is that no one will take to the streets to protest, its called apathy

The British deserve what they get for being apathetic cunts....

People protest against the government often. People protest for all kinds of reasons: lack of action tackling climate change, lack of action on the situation in Gaza, etc.

And people protest for negative stuff too. There's a race-hate protest on Saturday in my city. And another group of non-racists protesting.

British people protesting is not unheard of.

Seeing as Rushanara Ali has already resigned as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Homelessness and Rough Sleeping, not sure what a protest would achieve here. But people should feel free to organise one.

Surely a race-hate protest is illegal? Unless the race is something like the London marathon. Which race are they protesting against?

You said it was a race-hate protest, not a racist protest. I don’t think being racist is illegal, discrimination based on race is illegal and spouting hate based on race I would have thought is illegal, subject to what is actually said I guess.

I could be wrong but I don’t think “non white” is a race.

Rushanara Ali also had to stand down the role in her building safety portfolio. Apparently representatives of Grenfell survivors objected to her role after she attended a business conference held by one of the manufacturers of combustible insulation used at grenfell.

Does Starmer not do any due diligence before appointing ministers.

Labour came to office promising to improve the rights of Tennant's. Ali is currently putting through a change to the rules which would have outlawed exactly what she has just done herself. Doesn't matter the colour of the rosette they wear or the news they consume, many are in it for themselves.

Experts: too many taxes and too much regulation are stagnating the economy. The public spending trajectory is unachievable and the UK is heading for fiscal disaster.

Labour supporters: we need more socialism.

i agree. there is definately a culture of enrichment through power of office in this country and it needs to be ended.

the thing is that enrichment through power of office is traditionally and actively defended by the conservative vote and any move to address it is decried as an attack on the wealthy and their "right" to enjoy their gained wealth.

Exactly..

Starmer is renting out his £2 million home in Kentish town for less than £10k a year to his sister in-law. No need to declare it and no tax implications, which is counter to his mantra of "those with the broadest shoulders should bear the heaviest burden"... Another do as I say not as I do.

ok, if we're having whataboutery, Nadim Zahawi caught caught stealing millions from the taxpayer whilst chancellor, attempted to engage in lawfare with a SLAP to silence the journalist who exposed him and just got a slap on the wrist. the links between business and government are grubby and distasteful but there's no desire for real change from the electorate regarding this fact.

Correct of course, and dwarfed by Robert Jenrick signing off the Tory donor planning application early to avoid £40M infastructure levy

And these are the people coming to us for more tax’s in the name of fairness.

to be fair, that was for party financial gain rather than personal enrichment. the worst part of that incident was boris johnson complicitness when he stepped in and halted the investigation. jenrick and the others involved should be doing gaol time for that level of corruption.

For some, holding certain political views makes you guilty.

I’ve no idea what did or didn’t happen because I wasn’t there to witness anything, and neither was anyone else in this forum, unless you want to say different.

Deciding someone’s guilt of sexual offences based on you not agreeing with their politics? Wow, just wow 😮

no it's not. i think she should've resigned and she did. in fact i don't think any member of parliament, commons or lords, should be landlords .... and i also think having property portfolios in that position are highly questionable.

so i've delved into the back story. you said the tenants were evicted but it appears that their fixed term tenancy came to an end and they were given notice that it wasn't going to be renewed. the house was then placed on the market, it didn't sell and was reduced in price by 20%. it still didn't sell and so was placed back on the rental market at the market rate. now i have already stated my thoughts on politicians with property, but the facts appear to differ wildly from the faux outrage comments by the rightist hypocrits on this thread.

Let’s assume your version is correct, although you’ve just extracted information from a different source to the OP? Or have you spoken to those involved?

All tenancies are fixed term and nearly always include an option to extend. Did the tenants want to extend? If so, they were technically evicted regardless of if their tenancy came to an end or not.

So they seized the opportunity to liquify their assets, I assume to move the funds offshore and avoid potential new taxes the party has been discussing in private?

That didn’t work out so they ramped up the rent and made a killing that way

Bottom line, if they didn’t think it was wrong they wouldn’t have resigned

under the current terms of the housing act 1988, when a fixed term ends there is no automatic right to renew, end of. don't get me wrong, i think the forthcoming laws surrounding rental properties in january is an improvement, but the initial report of the situation in question isn't accurate.

i have set out my opinion about politicians and property ownership earlier.

What a cunt

so i've delved into the back story. you said the tenants were evicted but it appears that their fixed term tenancy came to an end and they were given notice that it wasn't going to be renewed. the house was then placed on the market, it didn't sell and was reduced in price by 20%. it still didn't sell and so was placed back on the rental market at the market rate. now i have already stated my thoughts on politicians with property, but the facts appear to differ wildly from the faux outrage comments by the rightist hypocrits on this thread."

So why did she resign?

As Reeves herself said “she has done nothing wrong”.

Is the Labour government weak and can’t withstand pressure from the media for a few hours?

as an aside, when the law change comes in in january, the telegraph will declare it as "labours war on .....(delete as applicable)". at that point i expect that the rightists frothing at the mouth over this will be absolutely rabid as they decry the forthcoming assault on "landlords rights".

Not really. Labour has been screaming about how landlords are bad and exploitative but you have a Labour MP doing the exact thing that Labour has been complaining about.

The conservatives never complained about Landlords behaviour or promised to pass laws against it. They just pointed out Labour hypocrisy in this matter.

There’s no automatic right to make your tenants homeless either

I have been in 3 different tenancy agreements since 1988 and all 3 included the terms to extend. So I can only assume this labour MP didn’t want their tenants to have this right?

You are right Ali didn't break any rules or laws.

She gave 4 months notice to the tenants and also the option of a rolling tenancy until the property was sold. The tenants didn't take up that offer and moved out. The property was reduced by 20k not 20%.

She decided not to sell and listed the house for rent and increased the rent by £700 per month. She also stepped in when the management company demanded money from the tenants for repainting, stopping the payment being taken.

So you are right she did nothing wrong, but the new tenants rights bill that labour are looking to bring in as law would have made what she did illegal. She as the homeless minister, had input into the bill, so it looks like very poor judgement in light of forthcoming changes.

as i previously stated, the fact is that there is no right to extend. you may not like that fact, but fact it is. you're anecdotal evidence has no bearing. if it's a moral arguement you want to make then bring it, but the misinformation surrounding this story is just that.

at a personal level my housing history has included council tenant, private tenant, travelling living in an old bedford army truck, squatting and being a mortgage free home owner so i have good grounding in the way things work and how bad things can get in any given scenario.

i think the optic sucks and her resignation was correct. i also think, as previously said, if you own more property than the house you live in then you shouldn't be allowed to be in politics at all.

but for the purpose of this story and the wild claims that she broke the rules, she quite simply did not. hope that is clear.

Because labour have been championing improving tenants rights since long before the election. This minister was in the process of implementing a change that would make it illegal to do what she has done. Politically it doesn't look good to argue something is wrong and should be illegal while at the same time doing the very same thing

She was hounded out by a left wing witch hunt, she did nothing wrong offered them other options like a rolling tenancy as she wanted to sell, gave them twice as much notice as needed. Eventually couldn’t sell so re rented. It was then set upon by some to take advantage seeing a chance to take a pop at labour.

Her problem has been that the party she represents has been saying since before the election and ever since that they will improve things for tenants. The actions she took, which you describe, are to be banned, and she is the very person pushing through the new rules. Although she and her party feel such actions are wrong and should be banned, she was perfectly happy to perform them herself, hence the hypocrisy
