Whilst Starmer is saying this is “voluntary”, from November this year it will actually be compulsory for around 8 million British citizens to have digital ID and be a criminal offence for them to not do so.

Thin end of the wedge?

Which are the 8 million and why will they be breaking the law if they don’t, I know I could look it all up but you sound like you’ve already done the hard work

Anyone who’s a company director or files for a limited company or limited partnership with companies house.

There’s just under 8 million company directors, then you’ve got the people of importance and accountants who file on behalf of their clients.

The next stage will probably be the self employed. There’s 4.4 million of those but some of them will be company directors. 10 million by this time next year is probably a fair assessment.

Then maybe it will be the universal credit site?

It’s voluntary, but you have to have one if you use a government website and it’s illegal of you don’t. Not exactly voluntary

When you say ‘digital’ ID, is that different from say a photo ID driving licence?

Or a passport that you can scan?

Yes, completely different.

Up until a few weeks ago you could visit just about any website without having to say who you were. That’s not to say the server the site was on didn’t keep certain information but the information was anonymous to some extent. Especially on a shared computer.

With the Online Safety bill, you now have to prove you’re over 18 to access websites with adult content. Porn, fab etc. You do this with a digital ID. Basically a third party collects your personal data such as passport number, driver number, your address, phone number, email address and a photo of you. They then verify your age and become an intermediary between you and the website you want to visit.

Some people think this is infringing on the basic human right to a private life. I’m not one of those people. Ive always been of the opinion that innocent people have nothing to fear from proving who they are when necessary.

Some people think the government will take this further and link all sorts of things in “your file” that they hold on you. That they will have a record of the websites you visit, the porn you watch, the stuff you’ve looked at with a view to buying, the social media you follow, etc etc.

There’s also the worry that these companies that hold all your data might not be as careful with it as you might like. You’d never know if the data is being sold. And what if they are hacked? Someone in Albania or Belarus or even a mile up the road from you could have a copy of your passport or driving licence and obtain credit in your name etc. my ex tried to do this but luckily digital ID wasn’t around or she might have managed it.

Do some research, I think you’ll find it interesting

Sorry, I should have said not all sites use digital ID for age verification. There are other options.

If as you say it's company directors and people who file accounts then it makes sense for those people to have government IDs to limit fraud etc.

There are many upsides and few downsides to any form of centralised ID registration. People who think of it as necessarily bad are usually of the type who get all their news from people who sell brain supplements.

That's not a digital ID, it's just an account in the gov.uk website for which you'll have to provide proof of identity. That account will just be used for filing data with Companies House, nothing else.

On the subject of digital ID: I believe we need stop lagging behind and get digital ID's rolled out to all.

The benefits far outweigh the negatives.
