England and Wales fertility rate lowest since 1938
Jump to: Newest in thread
The fertility rate has hit a record low, the lowest since 1938 at 1.41 children per woman.
Reported that for a country’s population to remain stable over time, discounting any impact from migration, the total fertility rate needs to be about 2.1.
The ONS reporting small changes in parental ages and people having children later, but not really correlating to the overall decline.
How will society achieve the 50% increase needed in birth rates to maintain a stable population?

That seems to have been the plan for the last decade or more. |

There were multiple drivers for child birth in the past, many of which are very weak now
- Religion losing control
- Less Social pressure
- People don't rely on their children anymore to look after them when they are old
- People don't see child rearing as a way to achieve fulfilment in life anymore as more people get happiness out of other material aspects of life
- Less marriages
- More pessimism about the future
These problems cannot be easily solved. Invest in more automation to ensure that the transition to lower population levels is smooth.
In the meantime, invest in innovations that allow people to have children in a later age and has less impact on people's careers. |

The theory is that the younger generation will get jobs, work hard and pay for the old people in retirement.
The issue seems to be that a lot of the ones having the big families are the ones making a career out of living on benefits and expect everything for nothing so the old people have to work longer and the young ones can't get jobs.
Maybe a decline in population will be good for the planet which is struggling to provide food and housing.

"With an aging population and Farages ethnic cleansing.
Tell me who's going to pay for the your healthcare and pension in your dotage?
Ethnic cleansing? Where are you getting that from?"
That's what remigration means.
Just because racist Nigel has packaged it in a edible way doesn't mean it isn't poisonous.
There'll be no white people on these flights..... until his ethnic cleansing is failing.
Then tills be, what, Trans definitely.
What do we reckon the gays or disabled or Jews next? |

OK. Once again.
Removal of ECHR.
Overturning of the Equalities Act 2010.
What do you think is going to happen, next?
We don't have wade vs roe to overturn, but take away gender pay scales, maternity protection in the workplace, disability protections, lgbq+, because, let's face it, trans rights are kyboshed already. No one will have any rights based on religion, age, sex.
Great!
Because pre 1975 was the epitome of human rights.

If you can't see that the rhetoric deployed against asylum seekers, refugees especially of Muslim or brown descent is a kin to the language used against the Jews in the 1930's.

With a world in turmoil and multiple wars in progress, and multiple threats and western economic systems nosediving, I can fully sympathise why some folks might choose not to have children.
And even in a world without those problems, where everything is hunky-dory and life is on an even keel or better, some will choose not to have children because they can. Both decisions have consequences, I'm not disputing that. But it is personal choice which carries more weight these days, not what society or tradition "expects" you to do. |

That's exactly how I felt in the early 1970s when there was a very strong fear of a nuclear holocaust and there were already clear signs that further population growth wouldn't benefit the world.
I was too naive, at the time, to realise that a big population equalled a big market for those looking to get rich by selling food, homes, transport and trinkets. |

Women are seeing how their Mothers and Grandmother's were treated by society and partners and, no longer want to give up their lives to have children. I found being a mother and particularly a single mum incredibly difficult, many friends also did. Having children is not everything in life. |

Luckily, this country doesn't have Christian nationalists, like in America. Plus we never had a Roe v Wade that could be overturned.
I suspect the overturn is having the opposite to the desired outcome, in that women in the US are choosing not to have children at all, when the Christian nationalists wanted to put women in a position of having children.
Currently we have some protections for sex and pregnancy under the Equalities Act. One political party has pledged to scrap the Equalities Act and replace it with more specific legislation, but hasn't given much more information than that. Will all 9 characteristics have their own legislation, or will some be left out, affording those groups no protection at all?
I think sex was mentioned as one that would have specific legislation, but no indication what that legislation would look like. |

Fertility rates in the uk are down, other countries are experienciencing this trend, also
However, birth rates have shown an increase, due to immigration. Non British born women are boosting the birth rate.

I don't want to go all Handmaid's Tale on this but at least in the UK there aren't many calling for a ban on contraception.
Unlike in the USA.
The American Life League are one example of an organisation looking to ban contraception.
Supreme Court judge Clarence Thomas wants Griswold v Conneticut (the 1965 ruling that legalized contraception for married couples) to be reconsidered.
The RIght to Contraception Act was blocked by Republicans last year.
The Heritage Foundation and Project 2025 say contraception should be removed from coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
These ideas are unlikely to spread to the UK but then people thought it unlikely that Trump would get elected or re-elected.
Reform is essentially the UK version of MAGA and many on the right here seem to believe in the Great Replacement theory, so it's not inconceivable that they'll eventually start pushing something similar.

Had to look up the Great Replacement Theory.
Then put the following into a Gen AI:
Given current birth rates and migration trends, what will the future ethnic and religious composition of the UK be in 2100?
Got an interesting result, so tried it again:
Do that again, but exclude right wing sources and look for politically neutral mathematical and scientific data.
Got another interesting result. |

Weird that you haven't shared the results which will obviously be that non-white and non-Christian people will become an increasingly large percentage of the population.
It's not this that's controversial but the notion that non-white and non-Christian people should not be considered real citizens and that there's a conspiracy by the elite (the "replacists" often considered to be Jewish) to make this happen so that the real citizens will be replaced by aliens who can more easily be controlled by the elite. |

Just didn't want to hijack the thread into another contentious discussion, but you're right.
Honestly never heard of it, or perhaps heard it referred to but never knew what it was. |

"Luckily, this country doesn't have Christian nationalists, like in America.
All roads lead to Farage it would seem. Exactly what he wants
But not, I suspect, in the way he wants.
Hopefully, he will take notice of what's happening in America, and not follow the path of making women second class citizens.
How would he do that exactly?
You have a level of intelligence. I'm sure you can come up with some ideas on your own.
You don't want to be drawn in on the detail, I get it.
No, Farage and reform have the monopoly on that.
I'm tired of people not using their own minds, wanting to be spoon-fed information. "

To be fair it's a term used more in the USA and continental Europe than in the UK (I think the Dutch far-right call it omvolking), but it's important to know about these things.
It's essentially an attempt to make a key aspect of nazi ideology seem respectable again. Except Muslims now take on the role of the aliens.
Unfortunately it's worked with many on the right parroting the themes.

"'fertility rate' is a misnomer in these times ... 'child affordability' rate would be more accurate."
That's a good point. It tends to be the families that don't work much for their money that tend to have the most kids. They'll be in for a shock when they outbreed everyone else. |

"The fertility rate has hit a record low, the lowest since 1938 at 1.41 children per woman.
"
Then we need the illegal immigrants, to prop up the population.

This might have a bit of an issue as well.
Do Energy Drinks Reduce Your Fertility?
Yes, energy drinks can reduce your fertility. High caffeine and sugar levels in energy drinks can negatively impact both male and female fertility. Studies have shown that excessive caffeine consumption can reduce sperm quality and motility, while sugar can contribute to lower sperm counts and concentrations. Additionally, the combination of caffeine, sugar, and additives in energy drinks creates a perfect storm for reproductive harm. It is recommended to limit or eliminate energy drink consumption in favor of healthier alternatives to support reproductive health. |

Is it not possible to prop up the population by using legal immigrants? |

Paying for the first child of UK born working peoples childcare then subsidising the 2nd or even the 3rd child,
or set up government childcare centres, same as above but a small extra tax is taken directly out of their pay to cover the cost, It would be a lot cheaper then private childcare costs |

Energy drinks, high in sugar aren't going to help. But more generally, in 2025, public health in the UK is appalling. Just walk around a mainland European city and contrast the physical shape of locals with Brits. We have a shocking incidence of obesity that inevitably impacts fertility. |

Cost of living is expensive as is! Rent is expensive. Trying to buy a house? Good luck!
Having kids in a World that is increasingly going to shit? I can see why folk would rather not.
Dating/relationship dynamics are changing too. |

What's the point in dating people who are permanently on their phone? |
