I think that it shows a position of great weakness when someone tries to shut down critical commentary.

Cancel culture over identity and gender politics was abysmal from the left and the actions of the Trump administration are equally abysmal from the right. No one comes out of the last decade with a good record here.

I think both sides need to learn the same lesson - you cannot silence people who disagree with you and expect it to end well for you.

It’s nothing to do with political left or right. Trump is an authoritarian dictator acting without impunity in a stupid western democracy.

That might well be true. It doesn’t alter the fact that all sides have tried to stop the other side from talking over the past decade. All sides also deny it when you point that out. Everyone is as bad as each other on this point.

I don’t really care for gender, identity or maga politics because they all break the fundamental element of what binds a country together: the ability for someone to say what they really think without fear of retribution.

Until this silencing cycle is broken by all sides we are going to be in a spiral downwards.

He just looks sadder by the minute, with his creeping demands to control. If he wasn't the leader of the most powerful nation on earth, it wouldn't be so bad. But it's not good for his people or any of us

No, Trump isn’t going to shut down the media.

British Leftists need to step out of their self created parochial little bubble.

Of course Leftists have actually been trying to shut down GB News in the UK for years and not a peep from the same people now ranting hysterically about a US corporation firing an unfunny presenter whose viewing figures are a tiny percentage of what they were ten years ago.

Nice rant….. totally incomparable but you be you buck!

This is the same Trump that literally yesterday suggested that licenses be taken away from station that criticise him and give him bad coverage…

Well... The orange is strong in you buck… and so it seems… amnesia!

OFCOM, like the FCC, have different standards for free to air broadcasting as opposed to satellite broadcasting

The rules that BBC, ITV and channel 4 have to comply to are way stricter than they are for GB News, which actually allows them to do what they do!

Sky news actually, for Rupert Murdoch credit when he set it up, decided to voluntarily comply with the same rules as over the air, so they deal with the same rules regarding impartiality for example

Even though GB news deals with a much more relaxed set of rules, they still have trouble keeping to those, which is why OFCOM still has to reprimand and fine them on a regular basis

Fox News , newsmax, OANN for example have license to do things that ABC, NBC and CBS News can’t

CNN for example like sky news have the license to, but voluntary choose not to and abide by free to air rules

And this is exactly why people need to fight against politicians who take away our freedom of speech, irrespective of whether it's left or right wing politicians doing it.

Left wingers celebrated when the speech they don't like is shut down. It was only a matter of time before their own speech is shut down. The right wingers who celebrate this should realise that it won't be long before the pendulum swings the other way.

Which is why, for once, there has been a bit of blowback from moderate republicans (well, those few left!) especially with the comments of the FCC head ..

It’s very much a “be careful of what you wish for “ type situation

If you don’t think Trump is trying to curtail free speech.. look what he is doing to universities, look how his is going after law firms, looks how he is going after museums…

His approach to universities is the opposite of shutting down free speech. Many have become far left silos feeding off of each other in their echo chambers. They have destabilised free speech, alternative opinions and fuelled cancel culture.

They should have free speech, yes. However many campuses were closing down alternative opinions, forcing out lecturers who challenged their views and dictating the narratives.

The same Trump who was banned from Twitter, Facebook etc? Both sides have engaged in this. Chuck Schumer pushed hard for Tucker Carlson to be kicked out. Both sides need to get a grip and allow open speech.

The oft derided GB News is the only channel I've seen here where you'll get the likes of Aaron Bastani who is hard left debating someone like Matt Goodwin. We need more dialogue, not less.

Trumps "dog whistles" - like he's subtle in his views or how he expresses them?

What I will agree with, is that both sides need to moderate language and rhetoric, whether in the US or UK.

So when you said "The actions of a dictator who believes only in using force to get his way", you were talking about something that hasn't been discussed in this thread.

I notice that you've downgraded him from "dictator" to "wannabe", and you've switched from "using force" to "intimating". Nice pivot.

He doesn’t have the intelligence to be an efficient dictator, only the malice. As for using force you clearly haven’t been following the activities of his goons in ICE.

So now you've abandoned the claim that the Marines or the National Guard have used force (because they've mostly just been standing there when they're not doing some light gardening), and you've switched to ICE. What force do you think ICE have been using to enforce Trumps will?
