"Andy Burnham has said Labour MPs are privately urging him to challenge Keir Starmer to become prime minister.
Will Starmer be able to hang on ? "
For now yes.
Burnham cannot be PM until he is in parliament. In theory he could serve from the lords but I doubt that Starmer would be offering a peerage at the moment. Besides, a Labour PM from a house they want to abolish wouldn't look good for the party.
So it's back to the Commons.
Getting a seat for Burnham wouldn't be that easy. Firstly there would have to be a vacancy in a safe enough Labour seat. But how "safe" is any Labour seat?
The party are languishing in the polls and trying to parachute a potential new PM into the febrile atmosphere of a bye election would be a minefield.
It could very easily end in tears for Labour. Then what?

A Labour lurch to the left comes as no surprise. Whether Burnham is sufficiently left wing to satisfy socialist backbenchers is a moot point. The prospect of parachuting in a leader from outside the HoC doesn't say much about our democracy tbh. |

I think he’s probably a popular choice. From their point of view they need to make a change soon or they risk political oblivion.
Lurching to the left when it’s the left wing ideology that is causing them their unpopularity is hardly surprising. Having been trounced at the local elections their response was to double down rather than listen. Wouldn’t surprise me to see them double down again. |

Labour Party conference this weekend. Will be interesting to see what comes from that
Starmer has failed miserably at home, spending to much time on the global stage. Economic policy has been dire and he has supported the likes of Rayner and Mandelson, his judgement tarnished.
Homeless minister resigned for evicting her tenants for higher rent
Corruption minister accused of corruption, then resigned.
Housing minister and deputy PM resigned for tax fraud
Mandelson a previous mortgage fraudster sacked for links to Epstein
Starmer appointed all these people. |

He's always seemed to have his head screwed on, and comes across as a decent, compassionate guy with great communication skills.
I really take my hat off to him for the way he dealt with issues around Hillsborough.
But obviously, he'd need to come on board as an MP first. |

Well said but let's not forget Nigel Farage took 8 attempts before being elected as an MP.
Burnham is also very easy on the eye. I think good looks count a lot in attracting voters.
Could we really end up with a PM that looks like a frog? |

He's never off BBC Radio Manchester. They have him on speed dial. He always has a political, snide dig when on air. A professional Mancunian, no HMO houses near Andy!. He wants them beside everyone else in Manchester. |
