Tarrifs don't work ?

I note that, despite the URL, they actually mean that the trade deficit has risen by 94%, not the trade balance.

The whole tariff thing doesn’t work… and he uses it as a threat for all policy

I just wish that SCOTUS would finally just get their fingers out and declare the way he is using them is and overreach of his power and declare them illegal..

For example just in the last few weeks he has threatened countries tariffs if they don’t support him on Greenland, Canada if they don’t buy F35’s, South Korea if they don’t build factories quicker, Canada and Britain if they do certain trade deals with China

No matter how much you tell people that it’s the consumer that pays tarrifs not countries he has managed to Jedi mind trick a certain amount of his base

There is that… but what the us is finding is that there is not always a “us made” substitute… or that for a us product some of its components need to come from elsewhere..

It was worked out the average American would end up spending an extra 1000-1200 dollars a year because of Extra tarrifs, which is why the trump administration is making more and more “carve outs” from the tariffs

Makes sense to me that's an extra $1000 staying in the country rather than going to China and a massive save on Carbon.

If products reflected the true cost to the planet, you would be spending way more than an extra $1000 a year on them.

It might be a bit young to remember this but in the UK we used to have by British campaigns to try and encourage people to buy from local countries to preserve things like UK manufacturing..... it's a shame the government didn't agree and impose tariffs, then we might have not ended up with an economy built solely on a few square miles of London

Trump's tariffs are levied on imports, so it's the importer who pays. That means that American companies are the ones hit by the tariff charges. Obviously they have to pass that cost on, so ultimately it's the American consumer that pays.

Slaves don't get wages, by definition. If they get paid, they're not slaves.

What you mean is that they get paid a wage that's reasonable for the country where they work, but looks like a very small amount to us privileged westerners.

Russia during the war with Ukraine is a perfect example of isolation and product substitution. Russia hasn't crumbled due to the restrictive economic trading imposed on it from the west, it accepted higher costs, reduced quality and substitution or loss.

If Russia was heavily reliant on the West and they didn't implement product stop or substitute to manage economic shock internally they would be in deep trouble now. The US are not in that position and can't be in any short term way, if those countries that are being threatened by tariffs were to pause trading for just 3 months Trump would be out of office by the start of month 4. You can't go from global trade reliance to isolation over night without destroying your economy.

Free trade without tariffs keeps things cheaper as the competition is high. That's the economic argument and it's a valid one. There are couple of political arguments against it though.

Countries with cheap labour will easily eat up the competition against a country with stronger labour laws. That's what happened with manufacturing from China and other Asian countries beating US and Europe.

If you are reliant on trade from another country for an important commodity and there is a geopolitical issue with that country, you are fucked.

While tariffs make things expensive, if used properly, they do serve a purpose in protecting national interests against these two political problems. Did Trump use it the right way? The short term results don't look good. We have to wait and see the long term results.

Trump has weaponised tariffs which is not a clever global move, and whilst the shock factor was initially playing into his hands, it has now reversed and left him looking weak.

Just the idea of tariffs is nonsensical.

So you’re gonna but up barriers that the average American voter needs to pay for.

I'll try to keep this simple and maybe you can try using Google if you need to.

US debt is rising faster than growth.

How’s it been successful for Greenland? The 1951 treaty said America can have as many military bases as they like (they had 17.. and closed them all down to 1) they said America can drill for rare earth minerals as much as they like ( reason they don’t is because it’s not cost effective!)

So trump pissed off all his allies and got what extra?

Anyway.. back to tarrifs

French wines and champagne already have tariffs on them… at that point if you are buying french.. then tariffs aren’t going to put you off

Like the tariffs on a high priced European car.. if you are in that price range, the extra tariff is not going to put you off buying that Ferrari for example.. and say.. you know what! I’ll buy American!!!!

All that ends up happening is that consumer is going to end up paying more… because Ferrari and Mercedes and McLaren certainly aren’t going to eat it

Champagne and Ferraris are (in the US) examples of what economists call "Veblen goods", that is goods which don't follow the normal rules of supply and demand but instead become more desirable as their price goes up. The majority of buyers just get them to show how rich they are, and if they're more expensive that just shows their richness even more.

For Veblen goods, tariffs are a boon. Exporters don't see a drop in demand so they're happy, buyers get more cachet from their purchase so they're happy, and the government gets some extra cash so it's happy too.

Funny old world.

I've never had the slightest interest in owning a 'fewwawi', driving one, sitting in one or even bothering to look at one, closely or otherwise.

I can confidently say that, even if offered one as a gift.

I might exchange it for cash and something useful but don't crave any interim interaction with one whatsoever.

If they do a good job moving money around as explained above, good luck to the parties involved including the US government!

"French wines and champagne already have tariffs on them… at that point if you are buying french.. then tariffs aren’t going to put you off

Like the tariffs on a high priced European car.. if you are in that price range, the extra tariff is not going to put you off buying that Ferrari for example.. and say.. you know what! I’ll buy American!!!!

But it also makes a mockery of the Trump administration claims in that the “country importing” is the one who is paying the extra tariffs when it’s the American consumer themselves who is the one basically eating the extra

"Left wingers for more cheap Chinese crap ! 🤣

Because the mobile phone or computer you wrote that on was “uk made” "

Probably not, but because of bad politics not much of anything is made in the UK anymore is there.

What is the point you are trying to make?

Liberal tears are the most entertaining, and watching the mindless moron ICE protestors getting maced for hindering police operations is the best.

That mobile phone and computer… not American made either!

There is a reason why he threatened Apple with a huge tariff if he didn’t produce them in the us…and then backed off when he got told people would freak and point at him if they had to pay 3000 dollars for an iPhone!

The left apparently think its a good thing that our manufacturing industries have been decimated. 🤷🤦‍♂️

Really…… because the thousands who work at the lovely Nissan factory just down the road from me might disagree… and the hitachi rail facility just a bit further away than that!

Whose fault is this “decimation” … I would blame multinationals who decided it was cheaper to build elsewhere far more than I would say “the left” in your eyes… since you now made it a left/right issue…..

That isn't exactly what happened.

Apple will now invest in the US for chips, silicon engineering, AI, and components, which is a US jobs and tech win. They are also planning to deal less with China and spread their risk with assembly manufacturing that they had by using China as their primary.

Not a bad result really.

Good divert from talking about tech manufacturing ! And wasn't Nissan going to close after Brexit ? 🤭

Whoevers 'fault' it was the fact is that it is the Trump right which is talking about bringing those jobs back to the US. Whether tariffs will achieve that remains to be seen but at least the right questions are being asked.
