UK unemployment rate hit a near five-year high in the last three months of 2025, climbing to 5.2%. (ONS /bbc)

Looks like the Brexit bounce and fixing the foundations has not worked?

Youth unemployment now 14%, higher than EU average. Of course Labour wants free movement for EU under 25s.🤦‍♂️

I think you’ll find that’s down to war in Ukraine, Putin, Trumps tariffs and the rain.

The more people Starmer can get on benefits, the more they realise only Labour want to increase benefits spending, the more votes he thinks he can rely on.

Starmer knows tax payers on the whole hate him so they are doing everything they can to put as many people out of work and on benefits as they can.

Ancient Vulcan proverb, “when you’ve ruled out everything else, whatever is left, however impossible, has to be true.”

Wasn't it France that found gdp increases when the lowest skilled people are kept purposely on benefits

35,000 in asylum hotels, and another 71,000 in dispersal accommodation. Presumably these numbers are not included in the unemployment figures ?

Not a single figure on the Labour front bench with any meaningful experience in business. Instead we have halfwits like Reeves who have lied their way to where they are and have literally zero comprehension of what it takes to run a business, let alone a country.

Why would anyone want to run a business under this government? I have a limited company and provide housing for supported living provision, as well as some traditional let's. The supported living providers are having to downsize and reduce their client base because of the NIC hikes. Literally having to walk away from helping vulnerable and disabled folks as a direct consequence of the government's actions.

The sooner this government implodes and is gone the better.

Most of them working illegally in cash in hand jobs which once would gone to British young people or students as an entry job.

This isn't a surprise - when soany people are being incentivised to claim benefits and when it's never been more expensive to hold down a job (public transport costs, childcare costs, commuting costs etc) it's no wonder employment is down.

Simply, there's lots of people who don't want to do the work available and have a better quality of life on state handouts.

Not a big surprise for a government that talked down the country as soon as they took office, invented black holes that even the ONS wouldn't support and then delivered anti business budgets making employing people far more expensive. The youngest in the workforce are bearing the brunt of this totally inept government. Still didn't they say this year is the year it all picks up and improves - not a great start is it

"And sadly the most likely alternative is a ***** **** that can't use a computer RIPUK"

I do feel we need to move to a technocracy, and every gov minister, including the PM, and below in the hierarchy, must pass a course on GDPR, Data Security, and pass all modules in the ECDL/ISDL.

.

Upskill for the future, because the future is here already (and has been since about 1980)

I should clarify...not a pure technocracy, but what is known as a technocratic democracy. It's a hybrid, essentially. However those in power must have the correct and specific qualifications for their roles. So a Minister for health would be Doctor, or Professor of Medicine, for example.

Each cabinet minister would have the relevant or most appropriate qualification for that role. The PM would need something appropriate I suppose, but I cannot think what exactly. 20+years in the highest levels of the Civil Service or something, and charterships of some sort.

Works both ways. Under 25s can leave to work/ train abroad. If my children were in this position in be encouraging them to look overseas

Can you provide a source for this claim or did you pull it out of your arse? It's so ridiculous I fact checked it and guess what?

There is no reputable research showing that France, or any other country keeps low skilled workers on benefits because it raises gdp.

What's the link here? Youth unemployment is high, so don't let them move abroad?

It doesn't work both ways in practice though. When we had freedom of movement millions of people moved from EU to UK but very small numbers the other way, mainly I imagine due to language issues. More British people work in Australia than the whole of the EU.

Bedfuck

If stocks and shares keep their value then it's a small price to pay, to companies. At the end of the day companies need to make a profit to survive. Employees are the sacrificial lamb.

Sadly we're all just numbers.
