Looks like President Trump us taking the first steps towards a deescalation of conflict in the Middle East. Real leadership at work, hopefully it is successful and the Mad Mullahs don't ruin it by bombing Croydon.🙏

I think Croydon would be a fair price to pay for the Orange one to come out of this fiasco with something resembling success. From his point of view of course.

Or was it the threat from Iran to hit in retaliation other countries power infrastructure..?

Coming from trump who hadnt wanted Israel to hit oil infrastructure but then they did twice it was a bit of an odd step up, a gamble some might say borne out of frustration his 'plan' was a mess and he was looking like he didn't know what to do next..

Looks like Trump blinked to me, not the Iranians.

Of course, he will somehow duck & dive & dodge & weave & spin it as a win, even though it looks almost certain the Islamic Republic will stay in power. He was pretty clear from the beginning that wasn’t his preference.

Iran .... Can you get a Nobel prize for ending a war you started 🤔

Cuba, he hasn't started the war there yet has he ? He's just cut off power and transport to civilians and I'm pretty sure that's not Nobel prize material either

A couple of possible explanations for today's events.

Trump is completely making this all up ( Iran has so far denied any talks took place)

Talks have taken place but with people who are doing it without authority from the regime.

Talks have taken place with those in authority but Iran does not want this made public.

I'm sure there are many more possibilities I have not mentioned but one advantage of this situation is that it may enable both sides to claim victory, save face and accuse the other side of blinking first.

Heaven only knows what is plan was . The USA have always planned for Iran to block shipping routes for oil etc - presumably Trump listened to nobody and didn't care. He's only bothered now, still of course about himself. If there's money for him , sustaining power and ego support , he's good to go

Other people, countries, etc barely feature. He's obviously just lying again, to help shore his potential up.

Iran will still be unstoppable later this year. It'll hardly be covered in a few months, like Venezuela has disappeared

It's a little odd how one minute Trump is a demented dictator who's sacked all the experts and the next he's listenening to the 'adults in the room' - even though he'd apparently got rid of them all.🤔

It's almost like there's a big gap between his public hyperbole and his private policy that's been blindingly obvious since 2016.

Correct, previously they were an annoyance, an itch that caused sporadic damage but now they have a mission... Vengeance.. and I think that'll unfortunately mean big revenge attacks on US soil and of course UK and EU as well unless something radical is done.

Destroy their weapons, kill their leaders but you can't kill their ideology, negotiations are the only hope and it's difficult to negotiate with an angry humiliated bunch of maniacs.

They didn't start it. You arse lick Trump who is robbing our pensions via stock market manipulations and is in the Epstein files in ways I cannot write on here. But other thread go after Starmer over Epstein. Think you need to get some balance. Seem a bit far on the right and blind to their crimes. Iran has issues, so does most countries. I did ponder some time back if underestimated Trump's "negotiating style". If perhaps he was taking Machiavelli's core philosophy to a completely new level, that mere mortals like I or the rest of the world could not even begin to imagine.

.

But the more I think about it, Machiavelli’s actual advice in "The Prince" wasn’t “be randomly hostile to everyone and see what happens.”

It was more like:

.

- Be strategic about fear vs. love

- Maintain stability and control

- Avoid being hated unnecessarily

- Act unpredictably when it benefits you, not as a default setting

.

In essence, the style I am seeing is “freestyling geopolitics like it’s open mic night.” or "Global Politics - Reality TV version".

Personally I hope the war continues for a month more. Destroy more of their infrastructure and make them realise sponsored terrorism doesn't work against the west.

They only understand through having the shit blown out of them. They want to die as martyrs and go to paradise help them along their way.

However there is a price, oil and gas will be controlled by the west aswell.

Yeh a few will kick ip a back lash, just bomb the out of existence, don't trust their peace talks, don't trust Iranians.

As despicable as the Iranian regime is, you have to admire their trolling of Tango.

I mean, when you’ve been bombed on more than one occasion whilst talks have been ongoing, you can understand their defiance.

Why would they negotiate with the US now?

They’ve made it clear they are prepared to call the US bluff & I get the feeling they would even be up for the ruck of a US ground invasion.

"Lebanon the latest country to expell Iranian Ambassador. Iran has now bombed 10 different countries, most of them former allies ! The future of the Middle East is being reshaped.

The fat one suar they were ready to surrender a few weeks ago.

Is he a liar ?

How many countries did Iran attack prior to the mango monkey decimating their entire army, navy, air force and destroyed all their munitions then ?

According to a BBC interview, Iran had a vertical command structure and when the US killed the leaders this collapsed and now nobody has control over the firing of missiles at will.

What a cluster fuck started by the pumpkin prick

Good luck governing the country then.🤣

Trump like other American presidents in failed wars in the region won't worry about what comes afterwards..

He's more about the next ego boosting headline, maybe Cuba now he's been warned off Greenland..?

Yes hopefully the dictatorship in Cuba will fall next 🙏

Much more death and destruction for those who appear to get off on such things to be excited about..

Stocked up on tissues..?

Liberation is always exciting. Murderous dictatorships not so much, but we all have our preferences !

Wonder what the US preferences are then? Backed a few dictators in their time. As long as they are onside, seems that’s all that matters eh?"

In this time under the current POTUS it'll be a subservient lap dog who will allow American corporations to asset strip the chosen countries resources, thereby profiting Trumps family and friends etc..

Used to be to stop the spread of Communism even when democratic elections had taken place..

Thatcher was fine with Pinochets thugs pushing people out of helicopters for being journalists and trades unionists, but dont spoil afternoon tea by talking about such things..

Trump is a self serving egotistical bully using the immense power of the country to act as his almost feudal war apparatus..

Strangely enough he gets confused when told no..

Out of his depth..

They have a considerable military plus the Basji, yes they're without air power but over 1.5 million troops will exact a serious toll on any forces trying to invade..

American presidents for decades have known the impact of closing the Gulf of Hormuz and have never actively contemplated an invasion..

Trump will have been told this..

Iran attacked many countries directly and with proxies since 1979. It is a rogue terror state."

List the countries that Iran attacked directly simce 1979, only those that were unprovoked would do .

If there that many just the top 10 with dates please

"Personally I hope the war continues for a month more.

Yeah, that’ll go really well when the Iranians start following through on their threats to bomb gulf oil gas & desalination plants.

When you try & put your foot on somebody’s neck, make sure they haven’t got a knife held to your gonads first."

Nothing new there, they'were already holding the world to ransom.

Being buddies with them means nothing to them. They hate the West and Israel, given the chance they would nuke New York, London, Sydney, Barcelona and Paris, doing a deal only delays the inevitable, their annihilation or ours.

Trump and Israel should keep pursuing their military sites missile sites and government sites and if they replace them keep bombing them.

How’s that working for you?

This exact job was done last year and the problem was solved. And then it wasn’t.

It was done a month ago and victory was guaranteed. And then it wasn’t.

It is being done now. And nothing is changing.

Your logic is sound _if_ the only thing that is needed is air power. That appears not to be a sufficient condition.

“Each day since the start of the war in Iran, U.S. military officials compile a video update for President Donald Trump that shows video of the biggest, most successful strikes on Iranian targets over the previous 48 hours, three current U.S. officials and a former U.S. official said. The daily montage typically runs for about two minutes, sometimes longer, the officials said. One described each daily video as a series of clips of “stuff blowing up.”

Iran reportedly reject Trump’s 15 point plan & respond with 5 terms of their own:

A complete halt to "aggression and assassinations" by the enemy

The establishment of concrete mechanisms to ensure that the war is not reimposed on the Islamic Republic

Guaranteed and clearly defined payment of war damages and reparations

The conclusion of the war across all fronts and for all resistance groups involved throughout the region

International recognition and guarantees regarding Iran's sovereign right to exercise authority over the Strait of Hormuz

….looks like they are digging in to me.

…are these the right people Trump was talking about? Wonder what very nice gift they gave him?

I suspect they know that a few thousand airborne troops and marines are not going to be able to invade the mainland. They could probably take that island that keeps coming up but then would be sitting ducks. Unless trump orders hundreds of thousands of troops to the area Iran won't be worried

Trump told Republicans Iran "want to make a deal so badly". But he claimed Iran are "afraid to say it because they figure they'll be killed by their own people". He added: "They're also afraid they'll be killed by us"

So, he reckons the armed to the teeth IRGC would be killed by their own people for making a deal to stop the bombing?

If the allegations have been made public, you can tell us what they are. Maybe even give us a link to the story (links to reputable news sites are allowed under the forum rules). At the very least you can give us some search terms so that we can find the story ourselves.

Fascinating quote from former Head of BBC Persian Service who claimed that BBC Persian has lost credibility with much of its audience who welcome the international attacks designed to help overthrow the regime.

“When you go to anti-regime demonstrations in London, people are saying: ‘Death to Ayatollah BBC.’ A lot of people now hate BBC Persian,” Saba said. “Its reputation has been shattered.”

Yet the BBC's views are treated as gospel by the naive.

Interesting that you've used the word "claimed" in there. Not because it casts doubt on what the ex-BBC man said, but because it shows that you acknowledge that your information sources might not be accurate.

If only a few other posters would follow your example.

They only understand through having the shit blown out of them. They want to die as martyrs and go to paradise help them along their way.

Just a reminder: these are temporary terms subject to a lot of thrashing out. So, far from a done deal. And at the point the Iranians were saying the US was ‘negotiating with itself’, it may well have been.

Doesn’t matter if you think it’s grand my friend.

By the looks of things, Trump’s support in the US is splitting & fragmenting with the likes of Carlson, Greene & others calling him out. it’s highly likely he will be reined in in November as n the mid terms. Best make hay whilst the sun shines eh?

Trump is going to be livid when he finds out the plan is all sanctions to be lifted.. all that money the us owed (which he blames Obama for) is to be repaid.. plus reparations.. and Iran gets control of the straits

Trump wanted out badly………

Even IF the ceasefire holds, in the short term I don't think this can be classed as a win for anybody. Iranian regime survival and retaining control of the Strait probably tilts the balance in their favour but they've sustained a lot of damage and blown up relations with the Arab Gulf States. The biggest losers though, without question, are the poor people of Iran.

Longer term Trump may have (inadvertently) done us all a favour in terms of energy policy. Surely there will now be a drive to reduce / eliminate reliance on the Straits of Hormuz and Gulf oil and gas generally and diversification of supply should be prioritised away from the Middle East. Oil and gas reliance in general should continue to be reduced, but at an economically sustainable pace (note Ed Miliband).

Set against that, we still have the threat of a nuclear Iran with even more incentive to build a bomb and wipe Israel off the map than ever before. No idea how that gets managed going forward other than a regular 'mowing the grass' every time it looks like they are close to a viable nuclear device. Maybe China can keep them in check.

Obviously it’s been a masterclass in strategic fuckwittery from Tango and the mid to long term consequences will be profound and unpredictable. It’s hard to credit that the US went into this with no Plan B if the regime didn't collapse, but that certainly seems to be the case.

Hubris writ large.

"Looks like President Trump us taking the first steps towards a deescalation of conflict in the Middle East. Real leadership at work, hopefully it is successful and the Mad Mullahs don't ruin it by bombing Croydon.🙏

"

Well said.

Think you will find many, many people and organisations from oil and gas companies, governments and agents thereof, recognised or not, will all be striving for a settlement of some form or at least a position to reduce the heat and buy some breathing room.

Fingers crossed.

I want to get back over there.

The poor people of Iran will truly suffer, the regime will look at their protesting in Jan and the calls almost daily from Israel and America to rise up and overthrow the regime ..

Trump saying we sent weapons but they didnt get through will only increase greater control and oppression for anyone suspected of anti regime thoughts or ideas both in iran and abroad..

Those who can will leave but not all..

How much do Russia, North Korea trade with the USA in any case?

Looks like it wasn’t only the Iranians who thought a ceasefire in Lebanon was part of the ceasefire deal:

European Council

Statements and remarks

8 April 2026 14:00

Statement by President Macron, Prime Minister Meloni, Chancellor Merz, Prime Minister Starmer, Prime Minister Carney, acting Prime Minister Frederiksen, Prime Minister Jetten, Prime Minister Sanchez, Prime Minister Mitsotakis, Prime Minister Takaichi, President of the European Commission von der Leyen, President of the European Council Costa

We welcome the two-week ceasefire concluded between the United States and Iran today.

We thank Pakistan and all partners involved for facilitating this important agreement.

The goal must now be to negotiate a swift and lasting end to the war within the coming days. This can only be achieved through diplomatic means.

We strongly encourage quick progress towards a substantive negotiated settlement.

This will be crucial to protect the civilian population of Iran and ensure security in the region. It can avert a severe global energy crisis.

We support these diplomatic efforts. To this end, we are in close contact with the United States and other partners.

We call upon all sides to implement the ceasefire, *INCLUDING IN LEBANON*

Our Governments will contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Technically not accurate as Netanyahu led and trump was sort of just 'following orders'..

Starting a half-arsed war with Iran was one of the dumbest decisions he's ever made. That said, at least it teaches the USA a little humility, you could look at it as their version of the Suez Crisis. No surprise, it was Israel that coaxed Britain and France back then too...

I think the best kind of negotiated settlements are where both sides can claim victory to their own people. Wether the people believe it or not is another matter. Hopefully this holds but it seems no one can agree what they signed up to
